Biography

Sarah (Phippen) Gold immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Birth and Origins

Sarah Phippen was born to David Phippen and Sarah Hull, most likely in Weymouth, Dorset, England. Based on the approximate birth year of 1652 for her presumed first child, Elizabeth Yeo, Sarah was probably born by about 1630.

Immigration

Sarah most likely sailed with her family, her father appearing on the ship's passenger list of those departing from Weymouth on 31 March 1634 on the ship Recovery.[1] Her father was admitted a freeman in Hingham, Massachusetts in March, 1635/6. [2]

Marriages and Children

Sarah married first, Thomas Yeo, before 31 August 1650 as on that date her father's undated will was proved, in which he left a plot of land to son-in-law Thomas Yeo.[3] Together Sarah and Thomas had the following children:

  1. Elizabeth, born at Boston on October 1, 1652. [4]
  2. Thomas, born at Boston on April 24, 1654/5. [4]

They removed to Fairfield, Connecticut about 1654, where her husband Thomas died in 1658.[5]

Sarah married second, Nathan Gold of Fairfield, after August 1659 (when her mother, Sarah (Pinckney) (Phippen) Hull, named her "Sarah Yeo" in her will[6]) but before 14 May 1660 (when she was called "Widow Ews Now Mr Goulds wyffe," in an appraisal of the estate inventory of his mother-in-law, Sarah's mother).[7] Together they had the following children, born at Fairfield:[8]

  1. Deborah (Gold) Clark, born about 1660
  2. Sarah (Gold) Thompson, born about 1661
  3. Nathan Gold Jr., born about 1663
  4. Abigail (Gold) Selleck, born about 1665
  5. Martha (Gould) Davenport, born about 1667

The "son", John Gold should be disconnected. Sarah would have been 12 years old when he was born. Also, she didn't marry Nathan Gold until after 1658 when Thomas Yeo, her first spouse, died.

The 1632 birthplace for Sarah Phippen could not be Fairfield, CT. The town of Fairfield did not exist in 1632. The earliest Connecticut settlements of Hartford, Windsor and Wethersfield were not settled by Englishmen until 1634-1635. The land which eventually became Fairfield was purchased from the native Americans in 1639. Additionally, information on David Phippen's (Sarah's father) wikitree page suggests that he came to America in March 1634, settling in Hingham, MA, later moving to Boston in 1641. So, it seems more likely that Sarah was born in England, probably Weymouth where her father and mother were both born.

Unknown-94386 and Phippen-8 appear to represent the same person because: Anderson, Robert Charles. The Great Migration Vol 5:455 shows Sarah Phippen, (dau of David Phippen) b. ca 1632 md. 1. Thomas Yeo; 2. Nicholas Gold ca 1659-60. making her mother of Deborah. See also TAG 17:1-3, 14-18 and
