Biography

Mary (Tucke) Samborne immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Mary Tuck was born, surely England, about 1625, the daughter of Robert Tuck and his wife, Joanna Collins.[1] She died in Hampton, then Norfolk (old) County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 30 December 1668, shortly after the birth of her youngest child.[2][3]

Mary Tuck married, probably Hampton, about 1649 (birth of child), John1 Samborne, as his first wife.[4] He was baptized at St. Cuthbert, Wells, Somerset, England, 2 December 1619, the son of Richard Samborne and his wife, Ann Bachiler.[5][6] John married second, in Hampton, 2 August 1671, Margaret (Page) Moulton. He died in Hampton, 20 October 1692.[7][8]

Immigration to New England

Mary is presumed to have immigrated to New England with her parents and siblings, probably in the spring of 1636.[9][10]

Life at New England

Mary's father Robert Tuck, was noticed of Watertown, Massachusetts Bay, 25 July 1636, when he was included in the second land division. He received further grants on 28 February 1636/7 and 26 June 1637.[11]

Robert Tuck was among those who petitioned for the Winnacunnet plantation (later Hampton, New Hampshire), granted by Massachusetts 6 September 1638.[12] The family presumably removed to Hampton about that time.

Research Notes

Sanborn, Samborne Research 2022

Birth Location. Mary's birth location is not known. Her father was baptized at All Saints, Norwich, England, 19 October 1596.[27] He married at St. Stephen, Norwich, England, 24 January 1618/9 to Joan Collins.[28] They had children believed older than Mary baptized and or buried at St. Stephen, Norwich in 1619, 1621 and 1624;[29] children believed younger than Mary were baptized or buried St. Botoloph without Aldgate, London, in 1628/9 and 1629. [30]

Prior Version, Birth. A former version of this profile reported she was born 1626 in Garlston, Suffolk, England, or born 1628 in Portsmouth New Hampshire, saying "Various online, Ancestry trees have slightly different accounts of where and when she was born."

Prior Version, Marriage. A former version of this profile reported the Samborne-Tucke marraige as 15 May 1647, without further reference. No historical support was found for that date. See separately, Sanborn-[Tucke] by 1649 marriage, New England Marriages Prior to 1700, 3 vols. No daughter Martha Sanborn. An erroneous New Hampshire birth vital record exists for Martha "Sanborn." 12: 12 mo. 1654, daughter of John and Mary--see FamilySearch. The clerk mis-stated the name appearing in the town's records for Martha Woodin. That record reads, "Martha the Daughter of John wodin & of Mary his wife was born: 12th: 12: 54," see George F. Sanborn, Jr., Melinde Lutz Sanborn, Vital records of Hampton, New Hampshire : to the end of the year 1900, 1:89 (wodin); digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors. Detailed research showing the error is posted as A solution for the Martha Sanborn 1654 mystery. Now what?

Probably no daughter Dinah Sanborn. This Dinah was included in a prior version of John Samborne's child list, but at that time, she was linked as daughter of his brother,William Samborne--yet the Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire reports she might have been daughter of their brother, Stephen Samborne. She married (1) 23 July 1678, James Marston. See the authors' entry for Stephen (9) Sanborn and "?Dinah, who from her appar. age ... does not fit easily into the fam of [John] and may have been a dau of [William]," (5) 605, FamilySearch Books, or FamilySearch Catalog entry.

Old Norfolk County. The jurisdiction was created 10 May 1643, and it contained the settlements of Salisbury, Hampton, Haverhill, Exeter, Dover and Portsmouth" until 1680, when the Province of New Hampshire separated from Massachusetts Bay. Child List/Children's profiles and WikiTree LNABs. Have just finished pulling the Hampton vital records for the children of John and Mary (Tuck) Samborne. No such record is known to exist for their eldest son, John, but birth records exist for the other nine children. These nine were all registered with surname spelling Samborn or Samborne. Most, but not all, of these children have WikiTree profiles that assign them a LNAB of Sanborn; details follow.

What say you? Shall we leave these profile as they are, or should we re-create the profiles with surnames matching the birth records or ...?

Thank you for collaborating.--Gene

I went through this dilemma too! Their birth records all have "Samborn", but I think at least some of them changed to Sanborn by the time of their deaths. (Benjamin's tombstone epitaph has it spelled "Sanborn.") Also, most of the secondary sources use "Sanborn." I have no strong opinion. I think whatever is decided, though, should be consistent for all of them.

Are the entries on American Ancestors transcriptions, or copies of birth records? If the former, any chance of finding the latter via FS perhaps?

Hi Sharon,

The entries cited are from the work to transcribe the town books. But this wasn't your average transcription project--it was the work of George Freeman Sanborn, Jr. (FASG), and then Melinde Lutz Sanborn (now Melinde Lutz Byrne, FASG).

I'll check on the availability of the underlying records.--Gene

Edited to add, see "[Hampton] Town Records."
