A baptismal entry at St. John's, Glasonbury, dated 3 March 1616 is sometimes said to be about John, thus associating him as the son of Joan, buried Glastonbury 1618, believed the first wife of George Rayment. An examination of the 1616 record found it was not about John and his association as Joan's son was severed. See Research Notes.
Biography
John Rayment was born, probably Glastonbury, Somerset, England, about 1622 (testimony as to age). He died in Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 18 January 1702/3, aged "abt. 87 y."[1][2] John was the son of George Raymond of St. John's parish, Glastonbury. The identity of John's mother is unknown or unproven.
John Rayment married (1), probably in Salem, Essex County, by about 1648 or 1650, perhaps 20 August [1650], Rachel2 Scruggs,[3][4] baptized St. Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, 23 May 1627.[5][6] She died at then Salem, Essex County, 2 May 1666,[7][8] shortly after the birth of her youngest child. Rachel was the daughter of Thomas Scruggs and his wife, Margery,[9] who settled at Salem in 1635,[10] having immigrated about that time.[11]
John Rayment testified in court three times as to his age--in June 1660, he was about age 38;[19] in September 1680, he was about age 60;[20] in June 1682, he was about age 60.[21] See Research Notes.
George Raymond, whose house was in the St. John's church yard, wrote a will 26 June 1651, proved 30 October 1651,[22] naming children Dorothy Robyns, Maurice Rayment, William Rayment, Elizabeth Rayment and John Rayment. Of William, Elizabeth and John, he wrote,
... to William Rayment my son that is in New England six pounds, to be paid if he ever doth come to Glaston to demand it.
... to Elizabeth Rayment my daughter that is in New England twenty shillings, to be paid if she ever doth come to Glaston to demand it.
... to John Rayment my son that is in New England one shilling.
Immigration
Nothing has been proven regarding John Rayment's immigration to the colonies. More than one John and William Rayment are known to have been early at New England. See Research Notes. Assuming Rachel was the mother of his eldest child, John was at Essex County, Massachusetts Bay, by about say 1647/8--in time to have met and married her. (They were the parents of two children by say 1653.)
At Massachusetts Bay
John Rayment was granted fifty acres of land at Salem on "2nd first [mo] 53" [2 March 165[2/]3],[23]
Granted vnto John Remont 50 ackres of l[and] lying next to that ffarme that was mr Alfords pvided that whereas the said land was formerlie gr[anted] vnto Jacob Barney if the said Jacob Barney doe quietlie possess and enjoy that 50 acres laid out to h[im] in liew of it otherwise he Jacob Barney is to enjoy the aboue said land.
Rachel's father, Thomas Scruggs, died before 24 June 1654 (date of inventory),[24][25] and on that date the widow, Margery, deeded to "her son-in-law, John Raymont," her land and goods, "for maintenance."[26] From the court record,[27]
Margery (her mark) Scruggs of Salem, widow, 24 : 6 : 1654, conveyed to her son-in-law, John Raymont, her land and goods, in consideration of £5 in hand to be given to her directly and £5 at the hour of her death to be freely at her disposal ; she was to have £20 per year, paid quarterly as long as she lived and to have the use of necessary household effects. Wit: Roger Conant, Nicholas Patch and William Dodg. The last two witness made oath before Elias Stileman, clerk.
John was chosen as a one of the "suruerors" fences for the Cape Ann Side, the "Gen'all field from the base Riu'r to Mackrell Coue" in 1657/8.[28] John was a Beverly selectman in 1670 and 1676.[29]
John was engaged to appraise a number of estates at Salem and Beverly, including the estate of Agnes Balch in 1657. His wife is probably the Rachill Rayment who, among several, testified in the related case of Balch's illegal will. From the court record,[30]
Widow Anis Woodbery, Nicholas Patch, her brother and his wife, John Hill and his wife, Abigail Hill, Rachill Rayment, Hanah Woodbery and John Grover testified that they knew Anes Ballch more than two years before her death, during her long sickness, and judged that all her estate would not pay Bengeman Balch and his wife for their trouble, labor and charge.
In 1659, William Ellett's wife was presented and fined for calling John Rayment's wife, Rachel, "a firebrand from hell, for her lying tongue."[32][33]
WIP ... John was deposed as part of a 1682 lawsuit between Benjamin Balch and William Dodge about a sixteen-acre parcel that was part of the "1000" acres granted by Salem to the five "old planters" in 1635.[34]
Estate and Probate
No record of John Rayment's estate or probate has been located. Prior to his death, he had sold or deeded the bulk of his real property, mostly to his sons, son-in-law or step-son-in-law.

Noteworthy also, on 10 July 1704, John Rayment, then of Middleborogh, with the consent of his "now wife Martha," sold ten acres of "upland and Swampy ground" at Beverly to his "Brother Jonathan Rayment, of Beverly, bounded in part by "land which I Sold to my uncle Capt. William Rayment & his son George Rayment," and in part by "the land which I Sold to my Brother Thomas Rayment," and that of "my Son Samuel Rayment."[42]
Family
John and Rachel (Scruggs) Rayment were the parents of eight children (uncertain birth order),[43][44][45]
John Rayment, born about 1648 (church records, 1722/1725)[46] or about 1650, died 5 June 1725.[47] (See G2G, A Rayment-Scruggs timeline conundrum.) He married Martha2 Woodin (John1).[48] John served in King Philip's war; said to have been the first soldier to enter the stockade in the Narragasentt Fort fight, 1675; perhaps the John Raymond shot through both legs during the 1690 expedition to Canada, while serving under Capt. William Raymond, his uncle.[49]
Thomas Rayment; born say 1652 or 1653, died Salem, before 23 October 1732;[50] married Mary _____.[51] Thomas was a soldier in King Philip's war.
Bethia Rayment, born Salem, 14 : 4 m : 1655 [14 June 1655],[52] died there 4 : 10 m : [after 1655].[53]
Rachel Rayment, born Salem, 14 : 12 m : 1659 [14 February 1659],[55] baptized Beverly, 13 November 1670,[56] died before 1 February 1696/7;[57] married Beverly, 14 November 1676, William Bradford of Beverly.
Jonathan Rayment (Ensign), born then Salem, 25 or 27 April 1666,[61] baptized Beverly, 13 November 1670;[62] married 6 or 20 February 1688/9,[63]Sarah3 Woodbury (Peter2, John1).
John and Judith (_____) Rayment were the parents of two children, born and/or baptized Beverly,
Born about 1622. A prior version of this profile reported John was born "3 Mar 1616 at St Johns, Somerset, England." There is a baptismal entry so dated at St. John's, Glastonbury, and this date is often given as his baptism--for example, FamilySearch Family Tree (PID LC9J-6LT) and FindAGrave (memorial 60336123). However, a review of that record finds the gender is more likely a female (a "filia"), the parent's given name is unlikely George; the surname is unlikely Rayment or Raymond. See the restricted access record in "Parish Registers for St. John's Church, Glastonbury, 1603-1900"; images, FamilySearch (FHL film 1,526,630, DGS 4,021,891 (image 1632 of 2362). A snippet of the parish record has been uploaded to St. John's 3 March 1615/6 Snippet. No other baptismal record has been identified about John Rayment. According to George Lansing Raymond, "All the [St. John's] records are missing between about 1621 and 1653."[68]
Despite this vital record, John Rayment testified three times in court as to his age. First in 1660, he was about age 38 (EQC 2:219). In 1680, he was about at 60 (EQC 8:7), and 1682, he was again about age 60 (EQC 8:323).
Recent published reference to John Rayment's birth is found in David Curtis Dearborn and John Bradley Arthaud, "William1 Woodbury of Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts," New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 175 (2021):207-222, at 215. These authors reported John was born "about 1622," citing "Ferris, Dawes-Gates ... , 2:697-699."
Identifying Judith Finne. Research to identify John's second wife, Judith (Finne) Woodbury, began when Charla Woodbury shared some some English Woodbury-Finne/Fine records. See Charla Woodbury, "Children of William Woodbury ... of Beverly MA," message board posting of January 22, 2009; web content, GenForum. Subsequent threaded posts cite FHL films #595,417, 595,418, and 597,248 for baptisms and deaths at St. Dunstain of children born to William Woodbury (var. spellings] "of Ratcliff Mariner" and wife Jdth/Judeth/Judith.
Birth of son John. This son was reported "in his 74th yr" in 1722, and age 77 when he died "5 'Ju' 1725," according to Israel W. Putnam, First Church in Middleborough, Mass. (Boston : C.C.P. Moody, printer, 1854), 84 (1722); digital images, Hathi Trust. His gravestone reportedly as "died 5 June 1725, in his 77th year"; see John W. Willard, "Gravestone Records from the Old Cemetery at 'The Green,' Middleborough, Mass.," Mayflower Descendant 12 (1910):65, 142, 198, 256 ; 13 (1911):23, 117; 14 (1912):80, 130, 214, at 14:84 (Rayment); digital images, Hathi Trust.
Walter Goodwin Davis seems to have mis-read the Middleborough church records when he wrote, "he died "Middleboro June 5, 1725, age 74." (The Ancestry of Bethia Harris ... ,131). Mary Walton Ferris (1931) placed his birth "about 1650"; further, of the Rayment-Scruggs marriage, Ferris wrote, "probably as early as 1647-8." (Dawes-Gates 2:699)
Mary Cook. A 1672 court record refers to one "Mary Cook" as the cousin of John2 Rayment.[69] John Rayment is presumed the son of Rachel Scruggs--the only surviving child born to Thomas Scruggs and his wife, Margery. As such, this cousin, Mary Cook, might have been the niece of the immigrant, John1 Rayment.

If there are no objections, I plan to update the LNAB of his second wife to Finne. Will update the profile research notes accordingly. :-) Gene

If there are no objections, I would like to make some updates to the profile. These are mostly minor, in order to be more specific. --Gene
Have already updated the Rayment-Scruggs marriage to note that the corresponding vital record is damaged, so that the year has been devised. (The record is also silent as to the bride's name.)
I will look over the child list in the hope of spotting anything that has not been well documented.
John Rayment testified twice as to his age--in 1660 and 1682. Both times, his birth was about 1622.
The first testimony was June 1660, in the Herrick presentment. He was then about age 38. See George Francis Dow, Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Massachusetts, 9 vols. (Salem, Mass.: Essex Institute, 1911–1989), 2 (1656-1662):219-20 (Herrick presentment); digital images, Hathi Trust; court held at Salem, 26 June 1660
The later-dated testimony was given June 1682, in the case of Balch v Dodge, John was "aged about sixty." See George Francis Dow, Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Massachusetts, 9 vols. (Salem, Mass.: Essex Institute, 1911–1989), 8 (1680-1683):323 (Balch v Dodge); digital images, Hathi Trust; court held at Salem, 27 June 1682,

I was unable to find him in the Great Pilgrim Migration book other than as the husband of Rachel Scruggs ( although I find American Ancestors somewhat difficult to navigate). I've been unable to find the exact birth date that is in the profile
Neither he nor his siblings are listed in the Great Migration Directory, so he's a later arrival. Looks like the earliest record may be the birth of his son about 1650? I looked in the Freeman's list, and I only found John Rayment of Beverly in 1686 (so probably his son), and earliest Essex Court Record was a Jury record in 1653.
Other than third party reports, I am unable to find evidence that John's second wife, Judith (_____) Woodbury, was born Judith Glover.
Doug Sinclair writes on his website about a Glover family. To his discussion, he adds, "William Woodbury of the Bass River part of Salem, later to become Beverly, married a woman named Judith. At some point the thought that she was a Glover was popularized, but I've found no evidence that she was."

Just when John was born is poses some conflict in the research about him, as some descendant researchers report an earlier marriage for him at England. I have yet to read any reports about that early family to believe exhaustive work has been done by which the potential conflicts would have been sorted out. John's father is generally agreed to have been George Rayment, whose will at England was discovered by Waters in the late 1800s. [b] The will was dated/proved 1651. (There are reasonably wild notions about the further identity of this George, in part because the surname Rayment/Raymond is more common than not.)

Recent work about this John Raymond (John Rayment) did not uncover a basis for his birth "March 3, 1616." Although his death record suggests he was older, testimony by John in 1660 would place his birth at 1622.[a] Mary Walton Ferris (_Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines 1931-43) placed his birth at "about 1622." Walter Goodwin Davis reports the date of birth "between 1616 and 1622"--the low side of that range comes from the record of John's death [VR]; the high side, from some of the testimony mentioned.
