American Revolution
In "Sutton in the Revolution",
Col. Asa H. Waters says the the Sutton "band" of "minute men" was commanded by Col. Jonathan Holman,
but later, in "Minute Men from Sutton",
the book lists those men as being in Col. Ebenezer Learned's regiment.
[3]
Learned was from the neighboring town of Oxford, and, according to Crane, a "firm friend", who was
"early in the field" (of battle) and sought Jonathan out as a "trusted officer" for the regiment he had organized and made him a Major.
[4]
The first two of the Massachusetts, Revolutionary War, Index Cards to Muster Rolls list him as Lt. Col.
As the troops were organizing themselves over the next days it became Major and he received his officers' commission.
[5]
I believe this difference in rank is what led "Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War" to list him twice on pgs. 155-6.
