Biography

Born in the small town of Dawson, Texas to Audie and Frances Putman. I completed the fourth grade in Dawson, then moved to Clinton, Tennessee with my mother and her husband Rex Manley. During the time from age 12 thru 18, I went to many schools in Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas and as far away as Connecticut. Seventh grade alone was 5 different schools due to Rex following the overtime jobs available at the time. Ending my high school education at Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in November of 1960. After spending 3 1/2 years in Bangor, Maine I decided the military was not for me. At that point I returned to Selma, Alabama, where Rex had a small electrical contracting company. There I served as an IBEW apprentice, then a journeyman wireman; worked many projects. In 1975 joined Lafarge Corporation as an electrical inspector. Lafarge relocated me to several projects in the US and Canada from 75 thru 1990 at which point their construction division retired. In 1966 I met and married the love of my life Cathy. Today, after 53 years we are still happily married and living "the life" most couples only dream of. She plays cards of any kind, I piddle around the house, play golf 2-3 times a week, then to celebrate the days end we enjoy a glass of red wine on the patio everyday except when we are on vacation. If the Crimson Tide is playing football we watch the game. I became a Texas State licensed master electrician in 1986. I still supply the licensing and permitting for a company.

Hi Johnny-

Your DNA matches my dad's GEDmatch kit number A957320. I think that we share a connection on the Rhodes family tree. I am trying to figure it out. I have been deeply researching my ancestor William Rhoads of Orange and Randolph Counties in North Carolina. I believe that he must have been related to your ancestor John V Rhodes. I just can't figure it out.

I am reaching out to see if you have any thoughts on the matter. Thank you so much for your time.

Beth,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I agree that your dad, Larry and I share some common DNA. In doing a GEDmatch comparison, it appears that Thelma French and J. Eller shares more than anyone else. I really do not do a lot of investigation other than on FamilySearch. Many of my French relatives are found in Navarro County, Texas where they migrated to from VA, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, TN mostly after the Civil War. Happy hunting.

Steve, I appreciate the invite but I have gotten too old to scratch around in strange cemeteries. I have several local family cemeteries that keep me busy so I will pass. Good luck with your projects.

Hi, John! Thanks for your about the Toatan/Totten/Toten line. I'm hunting more information regarding the ever-elusive Zennah/Zonnah. He was rumored to be Native American, though I have no records. I have some records for Absolem, but nothing to clarify Zennah. Perhaps we'll discover together!

Hi John

I see that you just did the Pre-1700 Self-Certification. That's great! Also noticed you made 682 contributions to Wikitree, thank you! Here at WikiTree we like to have our members involved with others; collaboration is key!

From your tags I thought you might be interested in our Southern Colonies Project. Here is a list of our other WikiTree projects you might like to check out: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Projects

Why don't you also stop by the One Name Studies project, to see if there's already a name study for (surname) going on? The current leaders for that are Doug Lockwood and Alison Andrus.

Hello John,

Welcome to Wikitree. There are 121 people collaborating on various branches of the Barnes family. If I can be of assistance, please contact me. If you trace your roots to my Irish immigrant, Brinsley (Barnes-1145) by all means let’s connect. I operate a website devoted to Brinsley and Solomon Sr. (Barnes-368) both of whom migrated to what became Wilkes County, NC in 1777. Solomon arrived in what was then Rowan County in about 1771. Brinsley arrived in Wilkes about 1784. At the time this was Indian Territory. Solomon’s roots are not known for sure. Some contend that he was English other say Irish. The website also discusses their descendants who migrated to Kentucky, Indiana and Missouri. Embark with me on an adventure to discover unknown fact about the Barnes’s, our Irish family who has been in America since 1734. Some of you have already discovered the stories about Brinsley our Ole Irish Immigrant, Deaf John, Handsome Jim, The Union sympathizing preacher Uncle Sol, or Jehu who was murdered by his brother. Meet these ancestors by clicking on the next link but read the rest of the message before doing https://competitivestrategies.us/barnes-ancestors-and-hist…/ Chose an adventure by clicking on one of the stories. A new story is announced every three or four month. The photo gallery contains pictures of our family. Browse around and learn about our annual reunion or ask questin on the forum. To be notified every time a new adventure is added to our website, fill out the form at https://competitivestrategies.us/barnes-family/

Hey Johnny,

I wanted to suggest that you edit your tag(s) to show any surnames, locations or historical events that you're researching. Once you save your tags, you'll be able to click them and see a list of other WikiTree genealogists who are also researching those subjects. For surnames, there will be another tab on that page that shows you all of the profiles with that name.

You'll also get notifications in your daily & weekly emails when there is activity relevant to your tags. With the way you set up your Tags now, you would get no information at all about either Central Texas or cemeteries.

You can read more about them on our Tags help page here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tags

Please let me know if you have any questions! :-)

Greeter Cindy

Hi Johnny!

Welcome to WikiTree! Be sure to take a look at the link in the email you just got. It has important information to help you get started. :-)

WikiTree is different than other genealogy websites because our goal is to have one profile per person, and that means we share ancestors and work together as a BIG collaborative team!

What brings you to WikiTree? Do you have research you’d like to share? Are you interested in how your family fits into the big tree?

Confirm your email address, and you’ll be given an opportunity to fill in the Tags and comments to tell us about your genealogical interests.

Once you volunteer, one of our Greeters will confirm your membership, and you'll be able to add your family to the tree!

Happy Hunting, Cindy
