The surname of Champion was derived from the Old French word Campion. It was brought into England in the wake of the Norman invasion of 1066. Early records mention Henry de Champion, during the reign of Henry III (1216-1272). Hugo Champyon of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. John Manser and Alyce Champion married at St. Michael, Cornhill, London in 1592. In many parts of central and western Europe, hereditary surnames began to become fixed at around the 12th century, and have developed and changed slowly over the years.

Voyage of the Hercules in 1633/34 The Departure From London and Southhampton The Hercules is of interest because is carried Thomas Champion to colonical America. The Hercules sailed from Sandwich on March 24, 1633/4, and from Southampton on April 18, 1633/4, for New England. A Warrant was issued on February 22, 1633/4, to hold the departures of the Hercules, among other ships, which were in the Thames with the intended destination of New England.(1)
Thomas Champion immigrated in 1634 from England to Hempstead, Queens Co. Long Island, New York, and his son, John, moved to West Jersey, New Jersey. Descendants lived in New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas. Thomas Champion sailed 12 Mar 1634 for plantation called New England, sailing ship Hercules for America Town records of Hempstead, LI, NY, Vol. I,II Champion Family, 350 Years in America by Ruth C. Champion pub. 1984, on line thru LDS site; Wife Frances Jacocks, name later changed to Jacobs. Father Francis Jacocks. She was known as Goody Champion on town records Vol. 1, p 345. Thomas left a will.
Town records of Hempstead indicate that Thomas Champion was a resident as early at 1655. His land were recorded 1659. He had "6 gattes and allotted 13 acres of land as a 'Particular inhabitant'. 27 May 1659 Thomas Ellison gave land to his father -in-law Thomas Champion 2 May 1659 Thomas Champion bought land from Robert Coe 18 Feb 1668 Thomas Champion exchanges land with Thomas Hicks 16 Jan 1672 Town of Hempstead grants Thomas Champion additional lands adjacent to Frances Jacock's "A piece of and joyning to his father's field at the south side of John Carman's tilsome (Toilsome)>" At the same town meeting,John Jonson received land 16 Jan 1672 John Jonshon, husband of Hannah Champion, son-in-law of Thomas Champion, receives grant of land. 25 Dec 1678 Thomas Champion received land in a division of Hempstead Town 15 Feb 1682 Frances Champion, widow, sells land to Jonathan Smith, Jr. Land located at Rockaway. John Champion as heir-at-law gave his relase 2 Jan 1687. (Under England law of inheritance, the eldest son inherits all of his father's land.) 24 May 1683 Frances Champion paid 5 shillings toward the support of Jeremy Hubbard, minister
The first minister of Hempstead was Rev. Richard Denton, who had ministered in Halifax, England and emigrated to Connecticut in 1641. Many from his church followed him to Hempstead, NY in 1644. He remained here until his death in 1663.
Passengers of the 200 ton "Hercules of Sandwich", Sandwich County, Kent, bound for the plantation called New England in America, with certificates from the ministers where they last dwelt: Thomas Champion, of Ashford, cert. from Edm. Hayes, Vicar, 12 March 1634; a servant, cert. from Edm. Hayes, Vicar of Ashford, 21 March 1634. This Thomas Champion is identified as the Thomas Champion of Hempstead, LI., NY. Hempstead town records prove his residency as early as 1655.
It is highly probable that the Champion families in America shared the same ancestors in Europe, but there seems to be no proof of this relationship. Very common names such as Thomas, John, Joseph, Nathaniel, and Benjamin make research difficult.
