Thank you for your insightful commentary on the complex Thomas Wingfield discussion. Much appreciated.
Hi Paul,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

PS Thanks for your contributions so far! Please do return to the profiles you create to add more biographical details and sources -- this is the best way to create an interesting, accurate, and well-rounded story of your family. The easiest way to find info and sources is to use the handy RootsSearch link on the right side of any profile. Use your WikiTree login to access over 20 websites. Once you find a correct source, copy and paste the citation info and add it to the profile. Learn more about sources here. You may be interested in checking out the resources of the United States project. This project includes many sub-projects that may be of interest to you or you can find other projects that suit other areas of your research.

Thanks, Peggy! It's been a blast so far, but the learning curve with respect to styles, conventions and formatting is pretty steep. I'm no stranger to tree construction and hunting up sources, but all that doubly, bracketty, pipy and bracy stuff... my, oh my! But I totally agree with the basis for all that, and it's a pleasant relief, in a way, from the anarchy on other sites.

The Helps haven't been very helpful, as they take you down various rabbit holes... I've learned a lot from them, but it's been more hit-and-miss than anything. I didn't realize how far below standard my understanding is until I examined the pre-1700 quiz. Again, I totally agree with the approach, but it may take a while.

I did brush across the United States project -- again, quite by accident -- and it looks like something I'd want to jump into, but it's also rather confusing, the way it appears. Maybe after this week's "Challenge" is complete. (I was invited here to be part of that, and it looks like a busy sort of thing.)

Meanwhile, I don't have a disciplined program, but I've been gradually working on adding more profiles, and adding details, and siblings, and so forth. It was amazing to see how a few well established lines simply attached themselves when I went to add a forbear (or two, or three) that were already here. 8-)

As for asking for help, I really appreciate you reaching out! Now, if I could just figure how to formulate my request(s)...

Thanks, again!

Hi again, Paul! Sounds like you are off to a flying start! Take your time though and enjoy the ride. There is a lot to learn but you will get there.

The US project will be happy to have you aboard whenever you are ready. I found that I learned a lot from participating in challenges when I first joined. Just be open to learning as you go and ask lots of questions.

Drop me a note anytime with questions big or small!

Hi, Ginny, and thanks. One of your fellow greeters contacted me on Ancestry & suggested I try this out, and possibly help with a "project" next month. I've got 21k+ people on my tree over there... not sure I want to import my gedcom yet... need to get a feel for this place.
