Biography

Disputed Origins. The specific origins and parents of this Thomas Arnold are not known. He was also not the brother or half brother of immigrant William Arnold (1587-bef.1677). See Research Notes below.

His birth date is unknown. He was not the Thomas Arnold baptized April 15, 1599, as is sometimes said.[1] His birth date is a rough estimate based on the birth of his first child in 1629.

Thomas died in September 1674.[2][3]

He married (1) ________ in England.[4]

He married (2) Phebe Parkhurst (died after 1688), daughter of George and Susannah Parkhurst.[2][3]

Timeline:[2][3]

  • 1 Sep 1687 Widow was taxed 6d.

Children

Thomas had seven known children:[4]

With his first, unknown wife:

  1. Susanna b abt Sep 1629, England? m. 1654 Apr 7 John Farnum

With second wife Phebe Parkhurst:

  1. Ichabod b. 1 Mar 1640/1; died young
  2. Richard b. 22 Mar 1642/3 ; died 22 April 1710; m. Mary Angell and (2) Sarah Smith (probably the widow of John Smith, miller)
  3. Thomas b abt 1644 died aft 12 Sept 1721

Disproven Children Based on the mistaken belief that Thomas was the brother of William Arnold, earlier sources included two sons by his first wife.[2][3] These are these are the sons of a different Thomas Arnold, and are not known to have come to New England:

  1. Thomas b. 2 or 3 May 1625
  2. Nicholas b. 1627

Estate

LAWS, Made an past by the General Assembly of His Majesty's Colony of Rhode-Island, nd Providence-Plantations, Begun and Held at Newport, the first Day of March, 1663 (sic); https://quod.lib.umich.edu/e/evans/N04574.0001.001/1:7.4?rgn=div2;view=fulltext

An Act for the Probate of Wills, power of proving Wills, and Granting of Administrations of the personal estates of persons was enacted by the General Assembly.

And be it further Enacted, that when, and so often as, any person shall die intestate, administration of such intestate's personal estate shall be granted to the widow, or next of kin to the intestate that shall desire the same. And in case of their refusal thereof, to such principal creditor or creditors, as the said Town Council shall think fit.

According to the following disposition of Thomas's estate, it would appear his widow refused administration:

Thomas Arnold of the Town of Providence in the Colonie of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England departed this life in the month of September, 1674. He left an estate of land, goods and c(h)attel, but had no written or formal will. By word of mouth with his wife and children he directed the division of his estate following his decease.
In order to avoid any discord concerning the estate, Thomas Olney, Town Clerk, determined the form and manner of settlement.
A covenant, conclusion, determination, and full and joint agreement to the settlement terms was signed on June 9, 1685, by his widow, Phebe Arnold; his sons, Richard Arnold, Thomas Arnold, John Arnold, and Eliezer Arnold; and, jointly sealed by his daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Samuel Comstock. Witnessed by Thomas Olney (Jr.), and John Browne.[5]

Research Notes

Not the son of Nicholas Arnold This Thomas Arnold was NOT the son of Nicholas Arnold!

In 1870, Horatio G. Somerby compiled a false genealogy of the Arnold family, which was published in [NEHGR, vol. 33, pp. 432-38, as ”Mr. Somerby’s Genealogy of the Arnold Family.

Immediately after a better-sourced article entitled "Early Records of the Arnold Family." NEHGR 33: 427, was published. Somerby's errors (intentional or otherwise) are discussed in the 1915 article "The Parentage of William Arnold and Thomas Arnold of Providence, R.I.," in NEHGR, vol. 69 (1915), pp. 64-69: in which William Arnold's father is proven to be Nicholas Arnold not Thomas as stated by Somerby. No real evidence has been seen that Thomas, son of Nicholas and Grace, emigrated to New England.[6] (Later research showed this Thomas died in England.)

The mistaken belief that William Arnold and Thomas were brothers has caused mass confusion between the generations of Thomas Arnolds. It was believed that Thomas was bapt. 18 April 1599, the brother of William Arnold, who also settled in Rhode Island.

  • Following an interesting trail involving several wills, there is a good possibility, but yet uncertain, that Thomas was from Hollesley, co Suffolk, England.[6]
  • This information was used to make the correction to Arnold's Gen. Dict. of Rhode Island.[7]

The 1915 article also disputes the statement made by Savage and Austin that Thomas arrived May 1635 on the Plain Joan.[6]

Briefly:

  • Neither Thomas nor William Arnold, who both went to Providence, came from Cheslebourne.
  • William Arnold was the son of Nicholas Arnold, of Ilchester, and Alice Gulley. Nicholas’ second wife was Grace Peake.
  • William was not the son of Thomas Arnold (sometimes referred to as Nicholas Thomas Arnold) and Alice Gulley and grandson of Lord Richard Arnold and Jaquita Young.
  • Nicholas and 2nd wife, Grace, had a son Thomas bapt. in 1599. This Thomas died in England.
  • Thomas, of Providence, Rhode Island has no known parents.

(move following to profile of William's father, Thomas?)

Thomas' children with Margaret: 1) Thomas (1599) 2) Joseph (1604) 3) Seth (1606) ???

Thomas' children with Alice Gulley: NOTE: Alice Gulley was the first wife of his father not his wife. 1) Robert (1583) 2) John (1585) 3) William (1587, immigrated to New England) 4) Henry (1589)

Note: The above children are listed here only as suppositions. Solid documentation / proof is needed. This was taken from the most carefully thought out genealogy I could find, which is most likely not conclusive proof. We welcome feedback on other genealogists' conclusions.

Is anyone interested in pursuing this proposed origin for Thomas that is on the FindAGrave memorial:

"Thomas Arnold was an early settler of Watertown, Mass. and Providence, Rhode Island and was likely a son of William Arnold of Hollesley, Suffolk, England, who named Thomas Arnold, his underaged son, in his will dated 22 Nov 1616 (and proved 24 Feb following). A nephew of William, Richard Arnold, goldsmith, of London, left a legacy in his 8 Nov 1644 will to several of his kinfolks "except for Thomas Arnold who is now supposed to be in New England or some other part beyond the seas.""

The wills do both certainly say that. Will have a look around to see if I can find any more info.

Arnoll-4 and Arnold-198 appear to represent the same person because: These two profiles represent the immigrant to Providence RI. Nicholas should be disconnected as father. His son Thomas. is not known to have left England. In addition the alleged wife Margaret needs to be disconnected or perhaps merged into the unknown first wife. See the comment on her profile.

There seems to be some conflation here of Thomas of this profile (the immigrant) with Thomas (Arnold-462), brother of William, the immigrant. The sources cited don't say Thomas the immigrant had a wife before Phebe. As for the sons listed in this profile - Thomas b. 1625, and Nicholas bap. 1627 - the sources cited show that these records are for sons of William's brother Thomas, not Thomas the immigrant. It appears the statements that Thomas the immigrant had a first wife before Phebe and was the father of the sons mentioned above should be removed. They are already mentioned in the profile of Arnold-462.

This profile also refers to Thomas, brother of William, dying in England but provides no source. Does anyone have that source? It should be included here, if credible. I know there are other reasons to think Thomas the immigrant wasn't related to William, but this particular statement about William's brother dying in England needs to be supported.

I left a message at the profile of Thomas Arnold (Arnold-5445), who is attached as a son at this profile, to be severed. He should be attached to Thomas Arnold (Arnold-462), who is the brother of William. A further mistake is that Thomas and Phebe's son Thomas (Arnold-1277) is attached as a son of Arnold-5445 and called Thomas the 3rd. I also asked that the latter, who was actually Thomas the 2nd, be detached from 5445 and attached as a son at this profile. He is correctly attached to Phebe, just to further the confusion. This may be an artifact of a bad merge.

Thanks for calling this out. So, should Susanna m. 1654 Apr 7 John Farnum be a child of Phebe?
posted by M Cole
Susanna's gravestone says she was 87 years and 7 months old when she died on 26 April 1717, putting her birth in September 1629. Phebe would have been about 16 going on 17 based on her baptism date. Possible, but with no evidence of Thomas's children again until 1640/1, it suggests she was from an earlier marriage. I see that Thomas's "unknown" wife has Susanna attached to her, so it makes sense to leave that be, but Thomas Arnold should be severed from her and attached to William's brother (Arnold-462). I'm going to post a message at her page about this.

Hi Doug, I found the latest (2009) source listed in the Great Migration Directory. (It can be borrowed on Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/arnoldfamilyofsm00bens/page/10/mode/2up )

It lists Susanna as a daughter of an unknown first wife, based on a marriage record (which I haven't looked up yet). It's interesting..it also says that Phebe had previously been married to a Daniel Cane.

For now, I've updated connections and the bio here based on that source.

Very interesting, thanks! Susanna's marriage record names Thomas of Watertown as her father. I created a profile for John Farnum and attached him as a spouse at her profile. Looks like she qualifies for PGM, unless the assumption that she came over with her father as a child is too vague?
posted by Doug Sinclair
Should Phebe Parkhurst (Parkhurst-14), Thomas Arnold's 2nd wife, be PGM? She is listed as mother of children in Rhode Island by 1640.

I'd move that question to G2G Raymond. Thanks!
LNAB for Thomas is misspelled... Should be Arnold and or Arnolde. See https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6D99-1CNC and also Notes added to Biography based on your own attached photo Source. Editing one way or another needs to be done. Also Note that there are other profiles for Nicholas and Thomas Arnold which may mean Merges need to be done. See Arnold-61 and Arnold-462.

I recently found a copy of the manifest of the Plain Joan from 1635, and a 30-year old Thomas Arnold is indeed listed. The ship is bound for Virginia. Would it be unusual for it to sail north before returning to England?

Should we, in your opinion, ignore the Thomas Arnold paternal line listed in "Ancestry of 33 Rhode Islanders"? It follows the Thomas, Thomas, Richard, Richard, Thomas, Roger pattern. Is this derived from the false prepared chronology, even though it doesn't refer to Nicholas?

posted by Ryan Kargel
Hi Ryan.

Where did you find the manifest? Does it include his first wife and initial children? While I have seen evidence of ships bound for Barbados also going to New England, I've not seen many cases of Virginia-bound ships also going to New England. I'd look for evidence of a Thomas Arnold in Virginia.

I'm not familiar with the book you've mentioned. Who was the author and when was it published? I think the Research Notes above explain the situation pretty well.

Since it is listed in the Disputed Origins section that Thomas Arnold is not the son of Nicholas Arnold, which suggests that we have removed their false relationship at least once in the recent past, I have removed it again and added a note in capitals to the top of the section. It may or may not help. Many people seem to be adamant that they are father and son. Let us know if you see it added again, and it will be detached again.

Why is Nicholas listed still as the father of Watertown, MA & Providence, RI, Thomas Arnold when it has been disproven for so long? Nicholas' son Thomas died in England. Thomas of Providence's father is unknown, though it is fairly certain he was from eastern England, bordering the sea. The one reference found that refers to a "Thomas Arnold beyond the seas" which might relate is the will of Richard Arnold, goldsmith of London. Otherwise, nothing is known of Thomas' origins. It's time someone hung out a big sign that says William& Thomas Arnold of Providence are NOT related in any way. I'm tired of finding the error still being made...& what has been done here is confusing, even though the explanation is there (& thorough). Most people don't read the explanations: they need the big sign.

Arnold-198 and Arnold-447 do not represent the same person because: There is much confusion and disagreement as to the origin and parentage of the Thomas Arnold who married Phebe Parkhurst. Careful analysis seems to indicate that Thomas Arnold (Arnold-198) was the son of Thomas Arnold (Arnold-447). Please see notes for Thomas Arnold (Arnold-447) and his son Joseph Arnold (Arnold-2424) for more details.

Arnold-447 and Arnold-198 appear to represent the same person because: The children of Arnold-198 are the children of Thomas of Providence, see the bio at Arnold-447, who married twice, first to Unknown, second to Phebe Parkhurst.

Hi Bertram would you take a look at the bio at Arnold-198 now and see if it covers what you wanted stated about the mistaken relationships.
posted by Anne B
The history of mistaken relationships in the Arnold genealogies has taken a life of its own. It's become just as real and noteworthy as the true relationships, and it is presently considered by many people to be the truth. If we don't provide a detailed, sourced explanation of why these genealogies are incorrect, another well meaning soul will either "correct" the profiles we've worked so hard on or create new ones, making a new mess for us to clean up.
posted by Bertram Sluys
I believe it's important that we don't delete other biographies altogether. There has been and continues to be a lot of confusion about who Thomas Arnold was, who his father was and who his children were. I believe that specific details that have been proven to be wrong should be kept in the biographical section, perhaps under your heading of "Disputed Origins" and "Disputed Children".
