Biography

William most likely was born in England, possibly in Fenny Compton, Warwickshire, England. His sister in Connecticut was Elizabeth (Gibbons) Baldwin (1617-1696), wife of Luke Hitchcock. His brothers in England were Richard, John, & Thomas Gibbons. ^[1]

He married Ursula.

William and Ursula had the following child:

William Gibbons of Hartford, Connecticut is brother of Elizabeth Gibbons, who married Luke Hitchock January 1641.

William was sent to Hartford in 1636 as an agent for George Wyllys, afterward Governor of Connecticut, to prepare a settlement for his employer. He was living in Hartford in 1647 in good esteem. The settlement of his estate shows that he was from Fenny Compton, Warwick County, England. His will mentions his sister Elizabeth Hidgecocke, her husband and children, as well as William's wife Ursula and daugher Sarah.

Will of William Gibbons of Hartford, Connecticut, is dated Feb 26 1654. Court held Mar 10 1654.

• I give unto my lov: wife Ursilla Gibbons her full thirds of ye profitt rents & revenues of all my houses and lands in Hartford, Wethersfield, & pequett during her natural life except a parcell of swamp bought of Robbert Bates being in Wethersfield. Allso the whole profifitts of my houses & Lands at Wethersfield until my dau Mary Gibbons shall be married or until she be of ye age o eighteene year. Allso ye whole of my houses & Lands at Hartford & pequett until my daughter Sarah shall be married or attayne ye afforesaid age of eighteen years.

• My will is to give to my brothers Richard, John & Thomas Gibbons in England twenty shillings apeace.
  
  
• Item. I give to my sister Hidgecoke firve pounds which she shall enjoy while she lives & dispose of it to ye child she sees most deserving.
  
  
• Item. I give to ye children of my sister Hidgecok which are living at my decease ye sum of fifteen pounds to be equally divided amongst them.
  
  
• Item. I give to my brother Hitchcok one suite and coate of wearing apparrell.
  
  
• Item. I give his sonne John Hitchcok one parcell of swamp about nine acres bought of Robt Bates lieing at Wethersfield to him & his heirs forever.
