Biography

William was born about 1740. William Harvey passed away about 1788.

Thanks to the research of Ralph F. Harvey, many questions about the Harvey family have been cleared up. Many people had guessed that William was born around 1720. Ralph fixed the date around 1730 to 1745. His son, Zephaniah, was born about 1760. Using the standard that most men did not marry until they were about 25 years of age, this would make William's birth around 1735. It would also make him about 58 years old when he died which was normal for those days. It would also make it impossible for him to be the William Harvey who married Elizabeth Mikel in 1746 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, as he was only a boy and living in Lunenburg, Virginia.

Although a lot of Ralph's research has been published in books about various branches of the family, none of books dealt with William Harvey, who died in Edgefield County, South Carolina, in 1788 and his children. Some articles have been written about several of William's children. Zephaniah Harvey moved to Jasper County, Georgia and remained there until his death. John Wade Harvey settled in Attala County, Mississippi. Nehemiah and Thomas Harvey appear to have moved to Mississippi with their older brother, John Wade, but they stayed in the southern half of the state while John Wade moved into the northern part of the state.

William Harvey was first married to a woman named Verlinda. It is thought that her maiden name may have been Wade. She named two of their sons Zephaniah and Nehemiah which were Wade names. She also named a son John Wade Harvey. It is thought that John was for William's father and Wade was for his wife's maiden name. They had eight known children. Three of these children, Zephaniah, Mary Ann and Verlinda or Lincy, moved to Georgia and reared families. Four of their sons, John Wade, William, Nehemiah and Thomas, settled in Mississippi. It isn't known what happened to Elizabeth Jamison Andrews Harvey. (Elizabeth Jamison was married to Micijah Andrews. His died intestate and his will was probated with William Harvey and Elizabeth Jamison Andrews as the executors.)

William married Elizabeth soon after Verlinda's death. Some researchers say they were married for only one year prior to William's death. A deed record found in Georgia clarifies the length of their marriage. William Harvey had three children by Elizabeth, two daughters, Martha and Mary, and one son, James. The two daughters, along with a half-sister from Elizabeth's prior marriage, Hannah, married in Columbia County, Georgia.

There is a Thomas Harvey who also married in Columbia County in 1798. His wife was Susannah Aldridge. This may very well be the Thomas Harvey who is found in some of the early records of Covington, Jasper and Smith Counties Mississippi. However that has yet to be proved.

William dated his will 1 December 1787. It was recorded the following year on the 15 of October 1788. By the 15th of January 1788, the will was in probate.

Will

From recorded copy of will:

The Will of William HARVEY exists in two states: The first is the archetype, dated 1 December 1787, which appears to be in the hand of Hugh Middleton to whom, as it also appears, William HARVEY dictated its essential contents. The archetype, that is, Middleton's holograph, was signed by William HARVEY. This is the document which, in court, Hugh Middleton proved by oath on 15 October 1788. The second is the proof-text which, on or before 15 October 1788, was copied from the archetype by the clerk of court for Edgefield County, South Carolina and which is recorded in Will Book A, pages 5 and 6. The recension given below is a transcription of the archetype which has been collated with the proof-text:

Signed Sealed and Delivered in the presence of us the 1st day of December 1787 Hugh Middleton, Lucy Middleton & William Harvey

Proved in open Court by the Oath of Hugh Middleton the 15th October 1788

Notes: 1. William Harvey: William HARVEY died between 1 December 1787, the date of his Will, and 14 January 1788 when his widow, Elizabeth, qualified in court as executrix of his estate. 2. now: In the archetype, this appears as know. 3. body: In the archetype, body is spelled as boddy. 4. soul: In the archetype, soul is spelled as sole. 5. Elizabeth: This was Elizabeth JAMESON, the second wife of William HARVEY, and previously the wife of Micajah ANDREWS. 6. Hilliry Philips: This was Hilleary PHILLIPS, the son of John PHILIPS (ABT 1726, Surry County, Virginia, British North America - 28 March 1784, Wilkes County, Georgia) and Ruth BEALL (ABT 1712, Prince George's County, Maryland, British North America - 1777, Richmond County, Georgia). By his descendants, he is recorded as the husband of Mary Ann HARVEY, the daughter of William HARVEY and Verlinda <WADE?>. [See G0497A: William PHILLIPS (Jr.), note 1, in Antecedents and Descendants of Whitmell Phillips (ABT 1772 - 1822) and see below, note 6, on Margaret and Rachel JONES.] 7. Zaphaniah: This is difficult to make out in the archetype. The proof-text reads Zachariah. 8. wench: That is, a female household slave. About Jane, see immediately below, the indenture of Elizabeth Walker to Sims & Byne, 22 September 1807. 9. natural: In the archetype, natural is spelled as natrel. 10. Martha: In the archetype, the pointed ligature connecting the letters a and t justifies the reading of this as Marthew. In the proof-text, the name is given as Mathew. Subsequent court-documents show that Martha is, in fact, the proper reading. To confirm the name Martha, see immediately below, the indenture of Elizabeth Walker to Sims & Byne, 22 September 1807. 11. Martha, Mary & James Harvey: These three persons were the offspring of William HARVEY and his second wife, Elizabeth JAMESON. 12. daughters: In both the archetype and the proof-text, this is plural. And it demonstrates that Marthew or Mathew must be read as Martha. 13. in: The proof-text reads this as on. 14. Dick: Dick, a slave, was brought into this estate by Elizabeth JAMESON upon her marriage to William HARVEY. 15. acoming: This is an American vulgar error for coming. In the proof-text, the copyist, who wrote coming, added the letter a interlinearly. 16. crockery: In the archetype, this is spelled as crokery. 17. Zaphaniah Harvey, John and William, Nehemiah, Thomas, Elender & Lincy, my loving wife sons and daughters: These were the offspring of William HARVEY and his first wife, Verlinda <WADE?>. 18. Salley’s: Only the termination of this name is legible in the archetype. The proof-text supplies it completely. Salley was Sarah ANDREWS. 19. Sarah Andrews: In both the archetype and the proof-text, Andrews is given as Andres. Sarah ANDREWS was the daughter of Elizabeth JAMESON and her first husband, Micajah ANDREWS. 20. Item: Persons unfamiliar with Romance languages should understand that the word item is Latin and that it means "also." With that meaning, it is frequently encountered in the legal Latin of testaments and inventories. 21: & bed: In the archetype, this is an interlinear addition. 22. Vine and Beck: Vine and Beck were the slaves of William HARVEY. 23. Lincy: This was Verlinda HARVEY, named after her mother, Verlinda <WADE?>. 24. my big sorrel mare: In the archetype, this is difficult to make out. The proof-text supplies the reading. 25: work tools: The proof-text supplies this as my work tools. 26. aint: This is an Anglo-American vulgar error.

After the death of William HARVEY, Elizabeth JAMESON married David WALKER as is shown by the following indenture:

ELIZABETH WALKER TO SIMS & BYNE: Deed Recorded 22 September 1807 ----------- This Indenture --------- --------- To All to Whome these presents Shall Come Greeting Know ye that I Elizabeth WALKER of the County of Columbia, late Widow of William HARVEY, of the State of South Carolina for and in Consideration of the nautral love and affection which I have and bear unto my daughter Martha, late Martha HARVEY, and now the wife of Lewis BYNE of Burke County and of the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my Daughter Mary, late Mary HARVEY, and now the wife of Leonard SIMS of Baldwin County and also for and in Consideration of the sum of ----- freely[?] to me in hand paid by the said Martha BYNE & Mary SIMS the right whereof I acknowledged have given transferred and delivered and by these presents do freely give transfer and ------------unto the said Marthy BYNE and Mary SIMS a Certain negro woman Slave named Jane and her Childron named Cloe Rose Sylvia Pat Peter Ja cob Bob Judy Stephen Billy & John and Se--y a Child of Rose and Jeƒsee a Child of Sylvia to hold the said negro Slaves and every of them with ---future ---of the family unto my said Daughters Martha and Mary and their heirs Sarre and Share alike free and Clear of the life Estate which I therefore have had and held in the said Negros under and by Virt--of the last Will and testament of said William HARVEY dec'd In Witneƒs Whereof I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal the 26th day of August 1807 Elizabe th WALKER {Seal} In presence of Abner SIMS A Crawford

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

If you look at all the research notes for William's father John, you will see I put research notes from an unknown person, and others, with references to land titles and all kinds of other research papers. The research is for more than just John, but I'm not sure where to put everything so I put it all there. There is definitely several sets of Harvey's but from what I'm beginning to understand is that some of the same Harvey family stayed in the North and some moved to the South. I have gathered all kinds of research information but unfortunately haven't had the time to filter through it all. I think when I do, the separation of families will become more clear. I also found that there are direct Harvey descendants living in my area but I haven't had the opportunity to try and contact any of them to see if they have family records. The Harvey's use to own all the land around Pike County, MS and what eventually became McComb, MS, which is near where I live. If you get the chance to review what I posted as research notes for William's father, John, it may help to start clear some of this up.

There are two different sets of Harvey that started out in the same area. They share a lot of the same names and birth years. There is a northern branch and a southern branch, which is the one I am from. It is very hard to find official documents for the southern side. The northern side has had books and all kinds of references written about them. There are 3 direct William Harvey's in my branch alone, and at least one other distant cousin that I know of. None of them were married to Micajah Andrews.

Micajah Andrews died June 1786. William Harvey died before 15 Oct 1788. I don’t know the date of marriage of William and Elizabeth but the birth of three children in that time span seems unrealistic.

I see the 1786 date all over Ancestry but someone has picked up some incorrect information. I agree that 1786 to 1788 is not enough time for three children.

From the Shelman Durham Bible Records (which have been transcribed and are not without error) Mary Harvey was born November 17, 1882. She married Leonard Sims on March 25, 1800.

I have always thought that Martha was older, she married Lewis Byne on May 31, 1796. She almost had to be at least fourteen which would give her a dob earlier that Mary.

James may have been the youngest, I have not found evidence that he lived long enough to make records of his own and he is not named in his mother's will.

Elizabeth Jameson Andrews Harvey married David Walker in Richmond GA on June 30, 1788.

I am going to see if I can dig up the source of the 1886 date.

Andrews, Micajah, dec'd, June 15, 1786. Wm Harvey and wife Elizabeth app. Admrs. by James Hamilton, R. P. Lewis Gardner, Daniel Marshall, Sec. Robt. Bartlett, Test: Daniel Marshall, Ambrose Jones, Jeremiah Lampkin, John Peake; app Apprs.

Edgefield, S. C., June 14, 1786,.; Hillary Phillips, Zehpemiah Harvey, and Edward Prince make oath before Hugh Middleton, that they have justly app'd the goods etc. of Micajah Andrews, late of Ga., dec'd as exhibited by Wm. Harvey and Eliza his wife.

The date, 1886, is when William Harvey and Elizabeth are being appointed Administrators of the Andrews estate and probably indicates that some of the Andrews children are coming of age and the estate is needing to be distributed among the heirs.

The book is online at Ancestry and may be at FamilySearch. The original records do not appear to be at FamilySearch.

This opinion piece just keeps growing. I would love to see proof that John and Mary “Unknown” had a son named William.

John HARVEY is said to have left a Will, but Ralph HARVEY was unable to find it. He went to Charleston, South Carolina and asked and looked. It could not be found. It just was not there.

Zephaniah HARVEY, John HARVEY’s grandson [and the son of William HARVEY], recited the chain of title of the land which John HARVEY had bought from Samuel FRY in 1767. He said it was given by the Last Will and Testament of John HARVEY to his son, William HARVEY.

Micheal Harvey’s 1755-1810 father was Thomas Harvey 1730-1792. I’ve seen no record of a brother William.
