Hi James: I noticed you making a comment (on the Netherland Settlers page) about "Kortrijk" morphing into "Lowe". Where can I find more information on that? Thanks, Van Weert-15.

I found more information on why many variations of the surname Kortrijk, Kortright, Courtright changed to Low or Lowe. On page 15 on the Early history on the Courtright family by, Courtright Samuel W.

Here is the link to the source of the book in the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/earlyhistoryofco00cour/page/n44/mode/1up

Hi James: I read through the book and found the answer/person to my question. Thanks again. In return, I found some current info on Kortrijk's in the Netherlands; there are approx. 43 Kortrijk's left, no van Kortrijk at all. I have no knowledge of a village or town by the name of "Kortrijk", so logically: no van's. (Van means from). Having grown up in the Netherlands with 30 years residence there, I have heard many surnames that were meant as a joke. The book shop in Grand Rapids, for instance, is called Zondervan, meaning without a "van". I always thought the name to fall in that category, "kort" means short in Dutch and "rijk "means wealthy. Google the following:

"Nederlandse Familienamenbank", and type in the name Kortrijk in the search box, you get a Kortrijk locality distribution in the Netherlands. Paper records for the Kortrijk's go back to the 17th Century, at least. I'm glad to assist. Gus Van Weert-15

Hi James,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
