Biography

Tersille was born about 1748. She is the daughter of Francois Naquin and Angelique Blanchard. The family lived in Anse a Pinet, Isle Saint Jean in 1752, having moved there two years prior from mainland Acadie. Marie Anne would have been their first child born there. ^[1] She was the ninth child born to the couple and the fifth daughter; there would be two more sibling born after her.

"The Acadian's hope of living peacefully on Isle Saint-Jean was soon shattered. In the summer of 1758, the fortress of Louisbourg on Isle Royale was attacked by British troops. The French capitulated thereby forfeiting Isle Saint-Jean as well. Soldiers were sent to the Island with orders to deport the inhabitants to France. Some 3000 Islanders were successfully rounded up and crowded on ships that set sail for Europe later in the fall. For the Acadians, it was disaster.1500 of them managed to escape deportation by fleeing to the Bay of Chaleurs region and to Quebec where many died of sickness and hunger. Of those deported to France, more that half drowned or died by disease and illness during the voyage and many others died in the months following their arrival in France."^[2]

The family did not escape deportation. They were among the 1033 Acadians who were put aboard one of five English ships that left Isle Saint-Jean in the fall of 1758 and disembarked at Saint-Malo in France on January 23, 1759. Only 538 of the passengers survived the harsh conditions aboard the vessels. Sadly, François and Angélique, as well as their children François and Ursule, died at the hospital a few days after they disembarked. Marie-Anastasie died a few months later. The two youngest children Marie-Anne 8, and Marguerite 6, died at sea during the crossing. ^[3] Tersille's brother Jean-Baptiste was also on board with his wife and daughter. He died on the same day as his mother. Tersille was an orphan at age 11. She possibly relied on her older siblings who survived the deportation to France: Anne, and Charles.

In October 1774, at the age of 26, Tarsile married fellow Acadian Hilaire Clement in Leigné-les-Bois, Poitou, (present-day department of Vienne) France. ^[4] She gave birth to their first daughter, Marie Anne, in July 1775.

In March 1776, Hilaire, Tarsile, and their daughter retreated with other Poitou Acadians to the lower Loire port of Nantes, where Hilaire resumed worked as a domestic servant and also worked as a carpenter.

In Nantes, the couple had four more children: twins Jean-Hilaire and Jean-Pierre in November 1776, daughter Madeline in February 1779, and son Francois in October 1780. Only Marie Anne and Jean-Hilaire survived childhood, as Madeline passed only six months and Francois just four years after birth.

Tarsile passed away herself in April 1784, at the age of 36 ("Acadians in Gray" states her passing was at age 38, but her birth and death dates support the 36 years referenced here).

She was buried on 16 April 1784 at St-Nicolas parish, in Nantes, France. ^[6][5]

   The land upon which they are settled is situated as in the preceding cases. It was given to them verbally by Monsieur de Bonnaventure. On it they have made a clearing for the sowing of three bushels of wheat in the coming spring.
