William Read, II
Birth date 1665 is a guess, based on the brewing license from 1690.
Bill Yenne, who researched the family for his book, Guinness, found no evidence for Elizabeth Read as Arthur Guinness' mother's name, nor for Richard Guinness' origins.[1] In fact, Mike Rendell reports that Richard Guinness married Catherine Unknown, and she would have been the mother of Arthur Guinness.[2]
Following are some of the "family traditions" about the grandfather of Arthur Guinness of Guinness beer:
William was a tenant farmer of Oughterard near Ardclough north east of County Kildare.William Read, a local farmer, started selling home-brewed ale from a roadside stall to troops en route to the battles in the Jacobite wars.
Local tradition holds that Arthur Guinness was born at the Read household in Huttonread, where his mother returned to her childhood home, in the tradition of the time, to give birth.
This profile reports a marriage of William to Catherine Unknown, without source. It also reports children, without source.
Children, without source:
He held a brewing license from 1690, and died some time before 1742.[citation needed]
