Hi Lynn

I see that you have uploaded a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report. The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

Thank you for your reply Lother,

I am still overwhelmed by this site, maybe I should just go slower (I have backed off this summer) I should just concentrate closer to my family. I have a reference called the 'Story' book done by a cousin in 1972 (no publisher noted) Need to update all my inputs with this reference source properly. I think I get too excited about the links to people. I think I will go over the new member information and see if more sinks in.

I had results of my DNA from Ancestry (a christmas gift) done recently and wanted to connect it to wiki tree. Some how thought that the GEDCOM would help this. Again thanks for your help Lynn

Hi Lynn,

This is a courtesy e-mail to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How-Tos been helpful?

Please do let me know if you have any questions about how WikiTree works, no matter how small. My rule of thumb when I started was to search for an answer for five minutes, then reach out to my Greeters, and then resume searching. I might have found the answer before they got back with me but they sometimes offered a different way of doing the same thing which was easier.

You can reach me by using the reply link for this comment or send a private message from my profile by clicking my name. See you in the branches,

P.S.S. Did you add some Tags? If you click the Tag (name in the green box) you will be taken to a page of other people who have that tag and links to resources. The tags also control the information which is included in the activity reports which you receive from WikiTree. To get the best results, add separate tags for each surname and spelling variation of interest. You can add more, up to 20 total, or delete some if you are receiving irrelevant information.

Thank you for signing the Honor Code, Lynn.

I see that you have had your DNA tested, congratulations! Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. To get the best results, you need to continue adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to existing profiles in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, try a different one. 24 hours after you connect to an existing profile, your test will have populated on the profiles of your ancestors and their descendants, where others with potential matches may also appear.

Let me know if you have any questions, and have fun!

In regard to your grandchildren, if they are under 13, their parents must be members of Wikitree.

Hi Lynn

For your book, I would list it as follows:

Murphy, Sharon Bloomfield. STORY 1788-1973: with information about the families of TUPPER-MCDOWELL-CRAIG.

And, if possible add where and when it was printed or published.

Ancestry.com. You will see many people citing records from FamilySearch.org instead of Ancestry. The stated reason is that that way anyone can access it as FamilySearch. (It is free, but you do have to register.) I also find it is a pain to reformat the citation information on Ancestry. You can access FamilySearch for anyone's profile. However, there is a trick to it. You first have to be signed in another tab on your browser. You also can go directly to FamilySearch and find the citation. For example, I have an ancestor Nicholas Spekczynski. His name is spelled many different ways in records. As I know in the 1905 NY State Census his name is spelled Nicholas Spckenski, I can search under that name and the 1905 Census is the first item that comes up. When you go into the record and click on document info, the information is all nicely formatted under citing this information, so you can just copy and paste into your profile.

"New York State Census, 1905," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MVB7-41Y : 8 May 2020), Nicholas Spckenski, Sheridan, A.D. 02, E.D. 01, Chautauqua, New York; citing p. 20, line 7, various county clerk offices, New York; FHL microfilm 479,650.

Hi Lynn

One thing I am noticing is that I am not seeing sources on your pjrofiles. For Canadians, an excellent place to find census information you can link to your profiles is: https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/search/Pages/ancestors-search.aspx
