Disambiguation

The royal ancestry for this Richard was disproven in 1960 by Sir Anthony Wagner, in his book, “English Genealogy." Sir Anthony places Edward (father of Richard) as son of the Richard Scott, clothier, of Glemsford, who died in 1565. See G2G post.

Biography

Richard, son of Edward and Sarah, was bpt 9 Sep 1605.[1] That he was the immigrant is proved by various family wills. George, also a son of Edward left a will naming his father Edward (of Glemsford clothier) and his brother Richard in New England.[2][1] Edward of Glemsford, clothier, names his son Richard in New England and Richard's first two children James and John.[1]

Richard Scott, migrated in 1634, settled in Boston, then moved to Providence in 1638. [3]

Richard Scott a shoomaker became a member of the First Church of Boston, 28th of the sixt Moneth 1634 (28 Aug 1634)[4]

Douglas Richardson[6][7] and a 1985 book on the origins of New England families[8] list another son, Richard Scott. Anderson discusses this son in the comments section of his father's biography, adding "We do not find the evidence sufficient to include a son Richard in this family."[9]

Research Notes

Edward Scott, Scott-2073 has previously been shown as a child of Richard. Edward's profile is unsourced, and there appears to be no evidence for the relationship.

I have removed Edward Scott, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Scott-2073, as a child, and am adding a research note to relevant profiles. There has been a comment about this on Edward's profile, which is unsourced, since 2018.

It appears from the sources on his wife's profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Marbury-22 that there was no son Richard either.

... or rather, there may not have been. Douglas Richardson believes he existed. The uncertainty is flagged on Katherine Marbury's profile, and I have now added to this profile. The parent-son relationship is marked as uncertain.

Anthony Wagner is not a Primary or Secondary Source the info Quoted appears the same from The New England Historical & Genealogical Register and ..., Volume 22 Page 16 that also contains Errors, for example "The Evidence That Richard Scott of Providence was the same Richard Born at Glemsford in 1607 is Family Tradition on Both Sides of the Atlantic." My understanding of the text above is that there is no disagreement that Richard the immigrant was son of Edward; but it's the line above that which appears to be in question-- i.e., that Edward was son of another Richard and *that* Richard died in 1565 and was not of royal descent. Others, does that align with your reading of the text?

Al, I've looked at page 54; it appears to be a lists of documents associated with one Job Scott. What do those docs have to do with a Richard here? Thanks.

Scott-1026 and Scott-29785 are not ready to be merged because: Looks like the death dates need to be resolved.

It's clearly the same person, though.

Scott-1026 and Scott-29785 appear to represent the same person because: There is an entire set of parallel profiles for this family that I am trying to merge.

According to the Gen-Medieval group, Sir Anthony Wagner, in his book, “English Genealogy”, disproved the claimed connection to gentry, noble, and royal lines for Richard Scott of Providence, R.I. I don't have access to this book, but since it's more recent than all of these other sources, someone needs to look at it and see what it says. If the points are valid, then this line needs to be disconnected. I will start a G2G post.
There are children attached who are not on Anderson's list. Edward and two Richards, but there is no James. Sources? Disconnection? Rename one of them? I've left a message for the manager.
