Biography
1655 Birth and Parents
Adam Shipley was born in England and died in Maryland before 1698. [1]
Adam Shipley first appears in the records in Ann Arundel County, Maryland in February 1668. Based on later documents, he was about 13, [1]thus born about 1655.
1668 Immigration
He immigrated in February 1668 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. [2]
Perhaps he was from York. since he was "transported" to Maryland Colony as an indentured servant in Feb. 1668 by John Pawson, a merchant of York, England, who transported him along with Christopher Shawn, John Browne, John Fish, Thomas Mason, William Barton, Richard Flint, Richard Patterson, Thomas Wood, and John Dixon. [1]
In 1670 John Pawson, a merchant of the city of Yorke, England made and recorded a claim to prove his right to 500 acres for transporting Christopher Shawn, John Browne, Adam Shipleigh (Sipley). John Fish, Thomas Mason, William Barton, Richard Flint, Richard Patterson, Thomas Wood, and John Dixon in Feb 1668. [1]

Adam Shipley came from England and settled in Maryland when this state was a wilderness. [5]
Adam Shipley settled in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, In 1668. He obtained in an honorable way much real estate. His choice of a residence was not in a town but on his farm known as "Howard's and Porter's Range" on the south side of the Severn River. [5]
1675 Land
Seven years after his arrival, by Jan. 10, 1675, Adam had completed his indenture and was Granted his mandatory 50 acres of land, on which he planted Tobacco. If he had been 13 on his arrival, he would now be 20. [5]
"Before Charles Calvert, came Adam Shipley of Anne Arundel Co, Maryland, and proved his right to Eoden du fifty (50) acres for his time of service performed in the Province. Warrant then granted to Adam Shipley for fifty acres of land due him as above. Certificate Ret. 10 Jan 1675 (LGABIIB:300) [1]

1679 Howard and Porter's Range
On April 5, 1679, he parlayed 4000 lbs. of tobacco into an additional 500 acres called Howard's and Porter's Range along the south side of the Severn River. This transaction was in the form of a deed of trust, which listed the Grantee as "Adam Shoplee, Anne Arundel Planter", and the Grantor as "Cornelius Howard, Anne Arundel Planter" (AACLR 1H 1:76) [1]

1681 Shipley's Choice
In 1681, he acquired 200 acres of Shipley's Choice. on the south side of the Severn River. (LOP CB 2:461-64) [1]

By 1687, had acquired nearly 1000 acres of land including 500 acres of "Adam the First" on Elk Ridge. [6]. Elk Ridge is in the portion of Anne Arundel which later became Howard County.

By the time of his death, Adam Shipley owned at least 1,000 acres of land in four counties of Maryland: Anne Arundel, Howard, Carrol, and Baltimore.
Adam Shipley was a resident in Anne Arundel County on 30 September 1670, 10 January 1675, 5 April 1679, 30 March 1681, 12 November 1681, and March 1687. [2]
1676 Marriage
Adam Shipley married Lois, who was born about 1655 and died in 1725. Her family and background is unknown. [1]
If he married about a year before the birth of his first child, his marriage would have been about 1676, when he was 21.

1698 Death
Adam Shipley died in Maryland before 1698. [1]
An unsourced Family Search profile gives Adam Shipley's death date as 9 August 1696 in Baltimore County, Maryland, with burial the same month in an unknown location in Anne Arundel County. [2]
One tradition says Adam Shipley was killed by Indians while returning from a visit with some of his children in Virginia.
After the death of their father, the children of Adam received shares of his land. They moved to Queen Caroline Parish in what is now Howard County, Maryland, where their names and those of their families are to be found on the Christ Church Register.
Adam Shipley died while a young man, leaving six children all under legal age, in or about the year 1696, and leaving his eldest son Richard heir at law by the old English custom of primogeniture.[5]

1717 Ongoing Family
At St. Anne's Church, Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, on 29 July 1717, four of Adam's children brought their babies for baptism.[10]

Was Adam the son of Hugh Shipleigh of Yorkshire?
Some sources, without further documentation, show Adam Shipley as born about 1650 in Yorkshire, England, the son of Hugh Shipleigh. [9] He was the son of John Sellman (I) and Groce) Grosse Martha (Grace). [9]
Was Adam the son of Richard and Elizabeth?
An unsourced Family Search profile gives Adam Shipley's birth as 29 October 1650 -- with christening on the very same day -- in Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire, England. [2]
N. Yeager reports the following information:
- His parents were Richard b. about 1625 in Fleetham, Yorkshire & d. Jan. 1659 & Elizabeth b. about 1625 & d. Dec. 1658.
- Richard & Elizabeth & their 2 deceased sons were buried at St. Mary's Church in Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire. At the time there were 2 different places Kirkby & Fleetham & over the years they were combined in Kirkby Fleetham.
- The Association believes Richard & family were born in Fleetham. Adam was baptized at nearby St. Radegund Church in Scruton, Yorkshire as St. Mary's hadn't a vicar at the time of Adam's birth.
- They had 5 sons.
- Adam b. 1648 m. to Lois UNKNOWN & had 6 kids. Richard, Peter, Adam, Lois, Keturah & Robert.
- John b. March 1651 & died April 1651.
- Robert b. March 1652,
- George b. June 1655
- Thomas born & died in Nov. 1658.

Was Lois actually Lois Howard, daughter of Cornelius Howard?
Some believe she was Lois the daughter of Cornelius Howard, since the Howard family owned "Howard's and Porter's Range" before it was transferred to Adam in 1679 by Cornelius Howard, Planter.[7]
There is no evidence that Lois, wife of Adam SHIPLEY was a HOWARD, and it is highly unlikely that she was.[12]
There is no documentation of such a relationship. Though Lois was living in the year that Cornelius wrote his will, she is not mentioned in his will. Theories as to how the legend came about are discussed in more detail at The Legend of Lois Howard Shipley
Was Adam Shipley an Ancestor of Abraham Lincoln?
James Hanks and his wife Lucy Shipley have in the past been believed to be the parents of Nancy Hanks, wife of Thomas Lincoln, and Abraham Lincoln's mother, and this is suggested in Boyd's books [13] DNA tests have now proven that such a relationship is impossible and Abraham Lincoln has no Shipley ancestry. [14]
