Biography
Gerrit married his full cousin Pietertje Cornelis Sluijs on May 1 1878 in Andijk. Children: Neeltje (Aug 26 1880, married Daniel Nannesz Vriend), Grietje (May 6 1882, married Klaas Kostelijk & Jan Wagemaker), Cornelis (Oct 14 - Nov 25 1887), Cornelis (Nov 21 1889 - March 1983 in San Jose, California, evangelist & author, married Femke Woudstra),
Gerrit and Pietertje left the Mazereeuws once they were married & joined the Gereformeerde Kerk; their son Cornelis wrote Vrije Westfriezen I and II, and moved to California where most of the family still lives in Modesto and San Jose; in 1880 the Netherlands had the worst potato famine since 1845. Strong rains had also destroyed wheat, beans and peas. And a bank debacle in Austria in 1878 had thrown all Europe into financial crisis so that prices didn't rise either. Many farms were bankrupted. Many families, including a few Sluys families, immigrated to the US; others started working in cooperatives.
