Jan married Grietje Jans Vriend in Andijk on May 1 1842. Children: Pietertje (1843, married Jan Jansz Sluis & Jan Gerritsz de Vries; Pietertje’s and Jan’s son Pieter moved with his wife Martha Willems Kooiman to Kalamazoo MI), Trijntje (1845, married Nanne Willemsz Groot), Cornelis (1847-1866, died of the chicken pox), Jan (1850, married Aafje Nannes Groot; in his youth he was drafted by the Dutch army to guard the borders), Pieter (1852, married Maartje Nannes Groot & Jantje Jans Vriend), Gerrit (1855, married Pietertje Cornelis Sluis), Klaas (1857, married Pietertje Ariens Sluis, also called Rooie (Red) Klaas).

Notes from the novel "Vrije Westfriezen II": Jan, after leaving home, worked in Andijk where he could be more active in the Mazereeuwer movement. He first worked for Jochem Boder. Later he worked for Nanne Groot, the prosperous seed handler, and his sons. He didn't earn much with it even though he worked hard. He'd thresh until 6 pm, then he loaded boats for market. They were Mazereeuwers, although many of their children later became Gereformeerd.
