Biography
Cornelis married 1 Neeltje Jacobs Ellerbroek on April 24 1851 in Andijk. Children: Pietertje (1852-1928, first stayed home to take care of younger brother & sisters; afterwards worked as a maid for Geertje Mooy of Burtje; married her cousin Gerrit Jansz Sluijs, also known as Kloin Pittichie), Trijntje (1854, loved to sing; married Willem Zwier).
Cornelis married 2 Aafje Jans Tinkelenberg on July 19 1855 in Andijk. Children: Grietje (1856, married Abraham Jans Vriend), Cornelis (1858, married Trijntje Pieters Dekker & became Gereformeerd, his son Jan studied to become a pastor in the Gereformeerde Kerk), Geertje (1861, married Pieter Jansz Vriend), Neeltje (1863-1865), Simon (1865-1871), Neeltje (1867-1868), Neeltje (1869, married Klaas Willemsz Kooiman).
Cornelis married 3 Aaltje Baan, his brother Gerrit’s widowed wife, on March 18 1875 in Opperdoes. This was her third marriage too.
Cornelis married 4 Cornelia Cornelis Geleijnse, a store owner and widow of Klaas Sietses Koster of Medemblik, on June 1 1882 in Opperdoes, 4 months after his son Cornelis married in Andijk.
Cornelis, after leaving home, worked in Andijk where he could be more active in the Mazereeuwer movement. He worked for a farmer named Jochem out in the country close to Oosterveldhuizen. Only 3 people lived in the area, all in Jochem's house. One winter night two women surprised them asking shelter for the night. Jochem's insight led him to realize they were rogues out to rob him and had Cornelis run for the nearest constable (about 15 minutes away) to arrest them.
Crelis' first wife Neeltje was a Separatist; Crelis was a Mazereeuwer. It took some time to work out how they wouldn't be divided because of difference of beliefs. The Separatists even put a ban against the Mazereeuwers. Neeltje eventually joined the Mazereeuwers. Cornelis' brother Pieter married Neeltje's sister Dieuwertje.
In later years Crelis worked for Jaap Pik. Only 4 of his children had survived childhood; his son Cornelis also worked for Jaap Pik. His oldest daughter Pietertje took care of the other children after Aafje Tinkelenberg died. Crelis was known to be very strict. But then he'd do heavy work all day and then be schoolmaster all evening.
Then Cornelis started visiting Aaltje Baan, Crelis' brother Gerrit's widowed wife, in Opperdoes. She had a house, an orchard and much money. She asked Crelis to marry her. He did research in the Bible and asked advice of his father who replied, "Your mother died when I was 80. If I thought I would live this long, I'd have married again." So he married her, setting Pietertje free to live her own life.
Cornelis kept being listed as a "dagloner" and "landbouwer" (definitely a step up from "dagloner") in his marriage records. I don't think he ever really owned any property of his own and worked as a tenant farmer for different people. In English he was called a manservant, farmer, and day laborer.
Cornelis apparently attended several auctions and estate sales. This is just a small sample of them. On Dec 18 1855 an auction was held for the belongings of Jacob Raven and Trijntje Berkhout, recently deceased. Cornelis Sluijs, bouwman from Andijk, bought a teapot for 90 cents. On Dec 10 1861 the estate sale for Jan Rol, farmer in Andijk, took place. Cornelis Sluijs bought “houtware” (wood ware) for 60 cents, construction tools for 1 guilder 50 cents, “things” for 14 guilders 50 cents, a bucket for 50 cents, smelling wood for 60 cents, 2 seed rollers for 1 guilder 50 cents, pottery for 80 cents, mats for 90 cents, a copper item for 1 guilder, pottery for 60 cents, a book for 1 guilder 10 cents, pillows for 70 cents. On Nov 5 1868 the estate sale for Geertje Groot, wife of Jan Sluijs, was held. Cornelis Sluijs Cz bought a salt cellar for 3 guilders.
