Biography

Children: Cornelis (April 9 1784, died young), Cornelis (Oct 22 1786), Jan (Aug 9 1789). All born in Midwoud.

I don't know where Cornelis' baptism date of Oct. 30 1756 in Zwaagdijk came from. It isn't listed in the Wervershoof, Andijk, Enkhuizen, Hauwert, Midwoud, Westwoud or Hem records. And yet it makes sense, as he then would have made profession of faith and married at age 26. There are others who waited until after age 42 to get married and have children. Cornelis' older brother Cornelis would have been 42, a bit old but not impossible. It's interesting we don't have a death record for the older or a baptism record for the younger.

Cornelis joined the Midwoud Reformed church on September 20 1782, only 2 weeks before he got married. He came, according to the Midwoud records, from Wervershoof. I did not find a membership record for him in the Wervershoof Reformed Church. Neeltje joined the Midwoud church from Abbekerk on October 27, after they were married. Neeltje’s sister Sijtie joined the Midwoud church the next March. In 1682 Neeltje is listed in the Abbekerk Reformed church records as joining that church from Henbroek and leaving for Midwoud (no dates given). Cornelis was made a deacon in the Midwoud church on November 19 1786, for one year, and he was an elder November 27 1791 until he died the next June. Jan Teunis took his place when he died.

Cornelis is listed as receiving some money as inheritance from his aunt Aafie when she died in 1778.

Notes summarized by Bertram Sluys from the novel “Vrije Westfriezen I” by Cornelis Gerritsz Sluys: (see notes under Cornelis’ grandfather) Chapter 10. Jan Sluys is now the main person who takes care of his brother and sister who are still children. Then he gets a job as a worker on Aagt Pietersz Man’s farm in Aendijk. Her husband Willem Kooiman had died and she needs someone to take care of the farm. And Jan and Aagt decide to get married! It's a bit unusual as Aagt is 45 years old and has two children. So today Cornelis is driving the horse and cart to Aendijk to the wedding, daughter Aafje and son Crelis with him. Close to Aagt’s farm, they drive past some boys. One of calls out it’s the family of that “jochie” (kid) who’s marrying that old wife! That makes young Crelis hit him as they pass by. The other children at the wedding have fathers who had worked for Willem Kooiman, and now they are getting a boss from a completely different town. They resent that. But they forgive each other, and they all go boating on the canal together. A new experience for Crelis and Aafje! One of the boys pushes Crelis into the water, and when he climbs back into the boat he slugs the boy.

Chapter 11. Cornelis dies 2 years after his son Jan's marriage to Aagt. He remains an elder in his church to the last. Now Aafje and Crelis run the family farm, and times are bad. In 1769, 12 of the 25 cows die in the latest “veepest”. Now Klaas Pietersz Blokker, whose land lies right beside the Sluys farm, talks about two sisters from Broek op Langedijk who were working in Abbekerk. Sijtje Madderom had gone out with Klaas and told him that next time they could double date, taking a friend of his to go out with her sister. Klaas talks Crelis into going to visit Neeltje, Sijtje's sister, in Abbekerk. Soon he finds himself visiting her every Sunday. During the winter Crelis and Klaas skate down the canal to visit Cornelis Madderom and Dieuwertje Visker to ask for their daughters’ hands in marriage. And Cornelis brings Neeltje to meet his family for the first time. Neeltje is interested to know that Jan is now a grandfather at age 35. His step-son Reinder was married in 1773 and had a son! But last year Reinder died, leaving his wife Grietje Best, their son Dirk and their daughter Aagtje born soon after his death to live with Jan and Aagt. Well, now they have a quick meal of potatoes [only accepted by the people of the area as fit for human consumption in the last few years], then they all go back to church for the afternoon service to hear the new dominee Nepos preach. In the past few years, the Reformed church was becoming quite lax in its beliefs and practices, and the Roman Catholic Church now had permission to act as a denomination. This concerns the conservative Jan very much.

Chapter 12. 1783: Aagt dies. 1784: Grietje Best’s children are growing nicely, and Jan is interested in becoming their father as he is in love with Grietje his step-daughter-in-law. It's crazy, but they aren’t related by blood and only half by marriage. He's 40; she's 30. He and the children know each other well. Hmmm. He needs to discuss this with someone. Crelis isn’t living anywhere near anymore. They had sold the farm in Zwaagdijk and are now living in Midwoud. So Jan discusses it with Dominee Gerardus Fijkema, who says there’s nothing against it in God’s laws. Jan proposes to Grietje, and she accepts. But then a few weeks later Dominee Fijkema receives word they aren't allowed to be married by law. What happened? Well, Jan's farm hand Freeck heard about this proposal and told his family. It so happened that his son Klaas also had his eyes on Grietje. He was waiting to ask her to marry him as he earned enough money, working for a local nobleman-doctor. Klaas sneaked a look in the doctor's law books where he found a statement from April 1, 1580, that a man can’t marry his dead wife’s stepmother. The updated law on February 23 1736 also included a woman not marrying her dead husband’s stepfather. Klaas' sister Annemie then blackmailed her boss who had friends in the courts in Enkhuizen into making certain this marriage between Jan and Grietje was forbidden. So now Jan decides to go to his brother Cornelis to talk about this. Neeltje welcomes him into the house as she takes care of their son Crelis. Brother Cornelis takes Jan to visit his own dominee who finds that there have been exceptions made to that law. He knows of some loopholes that he could try to squeeze Jan’s wedding through. And if he could manage it, all he asks is that he’d be part of the wedding party. On December 26, 1784, they are finally married. A month before he had received papers from “de Staten van Holland en West-Friesland” with a huge seal on them saying they had permission to be married! In fact, the law had been rescinded! And so people came for the second time to see Jan Sluys married in very unusual circumstances.

Chapter 13. September 17, 1799: It's a busy day at the cheese market in Hoorn as Jan Sluys arrive with his wares to sell. And a lot of people are there to talk politics, not buy or sell cheese. The English and French are at war, and there are English soldiers in town. Jan talks with Klaas from Abbekerk at a tavern about family events of the past years. They had moved to Midwoud because one of Neeltje’s sisters lived there. But things had not gone well there. Their first child died young. They had two more, but then Neeltje died, about ten years ago. Then in the summer of 1792 while loading his hay wagon, Cornelis noticed that the piece of wood on top of the hay wasn’t tied down. He pulled it forward, and it fell down on him, knocking him down between the wagon and horses and breaking his neck. He was 35 years old. Neeltje’s sister’s husband, Klaas Blokker, offered to take one of the boys but they couldn’t take both. So Jan and Grietje took them. So once again Jan is raising children that aren’t his. He never does have any children of his own.

Bertram Sluys
Coen, I believe that the PPP can be removed from this profile and the PM can be replaced by by a Netherlands Project sticker since Cornelis Cornelisz Sluijs was neither a prominent person nor he or his family is disputed in any way. Should I be the one to replace the PM?

This profile has two PMs who were active earlier this year, so they would have to agree to removal of PPP.

This profile could do with a bit of attention, as it has some GEDCOM junk
