November 2023 Challenge: WV National Cemetery, Pruntytown, West Virginia

Add Profiles to WikiTree from the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown, West Virginia. Don't worry about connecting.
We can work on connecting throughout 2024 and CaT's (but many will probably only need one additional profile to connect to the Global tree).
  • Add stickers and this category: [[Category: Appalachia, Needs Profiles Created]]
  • Please add the appopriate stickers and categories to recognize their service. See this Help page for details: Help:Stickers for Veterans

> ALSO: There are still several that need added to the Arizona Memorial Popup

The August RAWK Event has arrived! It last all month and we could use your help! Our very own Project member, Doug Leeper Jr. was selected to be RAWKed. Our Project will be focusing on increasing Doug's CC7 throughout the entire month of August. He currently has a CC7 of 948.

September 2023 Challenge: Back to school

The event will start on Friday, September 8th and run until next Friday, September 15th, 2023

Just like educators have served an integral part of growing our minds, we ask that everyone chooses among the pre-selected educators and grow, grow, and grow their trees.

Pick a name and start working on adding profiles to get them connected to the Global Tree.

August 2023 Challenge: RAWK + .....

The August RAWK Event has arrived! It last all month and we could use your help! Our very own Project member, Doug Leeper Jr. was selected to be RAWKed. Our Project will be focusing on increasing Doug's CC7 throughout the entire month of August. He currently has a CC7 of 948.

If you would like to volunteer to help those being RAWKED, click here. It is a lot of fun!! Don't worry if you forgot to sign up... you can still help out!

Also in August:

In August: Moonshiners, Bootleggers, and Nascar BioBuilding and Connecting.

This month, the Appalachia Project is connecting Moonshiners, Bootleggers, and Nascar profiles... or you can add profiles that are not already on WikiTree.

Don't forget to click the big green "Challenge Tracker" button after you add a profile! Then select "Appalachia Challenge". (Edits do not count.)

July 2023 Challenge: Connect Appalachian Notables

We are officially a full fledged Project with WikiTree. Our Project Number is lucky 130.

To be a Project with a number on WikiTree, it has to have 200+ Notables. Since May, several Project members worked together to create, find, and clean up over 200 Appalachian Notables BUT we didn't have the time to connect many of them. Connecting Notables is extremely important so we can share their entire story with all of WikiTree as well as researchers who use the likes of Google.

How do you connect the Notables? Add to their family lines. While some Notables may already be connected, they may not have great grandparents, for example, added. We want their family trees to be full and rich with sources and biographies.
We have so many awesome Notables: musicians, historians, miners, authors, painters, activists, and more. Go to this list and pick one! Pick five to work on... pick as many as you would like. All of your work helps us make Appalachia shine a little brighter.
Use Ian's CC7 App to find some pockets where ancestors can be added!
Leave your Interesting Finds on the G2G post.

DON'T FORGET TO USE THE GREEN CHALLENGE TRACKER after saving a Profile. You get one credit for creating a new profile (edits, etc won't count).

Appalachia

June 2023 Challenge: Appalachians are RAWKING

This month, the Appalachia Project has FOUR members selected to be RAWKed! (Random Acts of WikiTree Kindness to increase CC7 of fellow members).

We are asking all interested Appalachia Project members to join in on the fun! The four members are John Tyner, Nancy (Cox) Wilson, Donna Lancaster, and Kathy (Urbach) Nava (adopted profile) + Kathy (Sharp) Nava (biological profile). Each have family to add across the globe. It is super easy to participate. All you have to do is go to their profile, click up to Grandparents and start adding profiles that connect to them. Totals will be kept all month long.

Interesting Finds Links:

Thank you to everyone that helped us find Noteworthy Appalachians. We only had a handful on May 1st but now have over 200!

We do have a few Pop Up Challenges now and again. Make sure to check out our Appalachia Project Challenges Page for details. The next pop up will be something to do with Trailblazers.

May 2023 Challenge: Noteworthy Appalachians

I have identified Appalachians that were notable in their lifetime. These Appalachians need added to WikiTree. But wait... these are not just an "add and grab sources" type of Profile. These individuals require a full Biography with additional non-traditional sources that you don't find on FamilySearch (such as newspapers/magazines articles, Wikipedia/Wikidata, interviews, youtube interviews, Spotify music clips, etc.) Ex Profiles: Roselea Arbana Maddox and John Marsden Ehle Jr. (1925-2018).

These Profiles need to be fully documented with detailed, rich Biography & complete sources and categories."

Required for ALL Notables on WikiTree:

In the "See Also" section:

{{Wikidata|Q5687875|enwiki|sameas=yes}}

Keep in mind that you replace the number with the number assigned to your Notable by WikiData.

All WT Notable profiles should have the Notable Project added to the Trust list: wikitree-notables-project (at symbol) googlegroups.com

Pick a name and add yours. When you have fully completed the Profile, Please submit your Notable Profile to the Appalachia Project via this form.

POP UP Challenge for April 3rd through the 7th (Monday through Friday)

HELP! There is a Cemetery in Appalachia that has over 400 Profiles that NEED the Cemetery Category! Can you spare an hour or two this week to help us out???

Visit this Cemetery Report Scroll down the page until you get to the section for Winchester Cemetery and look for No Category. Basically, it will be the first really large table section you come to.

Each of those listed Profiles need this Category: [[Category:Winchester Cemetery, Winchester, Kentucky]] Just add that above the ==Biography== line and save. The change explanation is "Adding Cemetery Category"

Can we clear this list????

April 2023 Challenge: Connect-A-Thon

In an effort to help Improve Profiles throughout Appalachia, this Month's Challenge is to add the existing cemetery categories to profiles that are missing it.
April 2023 Connect-A-Thon
The Connect-a-Thon is coming up soon! The goal of our 72-hour marathon: bring the world closer together by adding missing relatives to existing profiles [more participation info].

The event starts Friday, April 21, at 8 AM EDT (12pm UTC) and runs until Monday, April 24, at 8 AM EDT (12pm UTC).

To Register, click here

Our goal is to add as many Appalachian Profiles, with our Project Sticker, as we can.

March 2023 Challenge: Cemetery Categories

In an effort to help Improve Profiles throughout Appalachia, this Month's Challenge is to add the existing cemetery categories to profiles that are missing it.
Lucky March Challenge
How do you find those profiles? There are several different ways but probably the easiest way is to pick the County in Appalachia that you do the most work in. For example, I do a lot of work in Upshur County, West Virginia. A sub-category of Upshur County, West Virginia is Category: Upshur County, West Virginia, Cemeteries.
Once you get to the main category page for a County's Cemeteries, select a Cemetery. All Cemeteries probably need profiles added to them or you could pick one that your ancestors are buried in.

This image shows the specific Cemetery Category Page. Click on the line that I highlighted with yellow: Detailed Report on profiles and related FG Cemeteries.

(Main Category Page for Indian Creek Cemetery)

This image shows the Detailed Report that WT+ provides. Notice the section that I highlighted that says "No Category". That section of profiles all need the cemetery category added to them. The category is located on the specific Cemetery Category Page: [[Category:Indian Camp Cemetery, French Creek, West Virginia]]

(Specific Cemetery Report for profiles that need Categories.)

Go through the Profiles in that section, one-by-one, and add the Cemetery category. Once you finish the cemetery, move on to the next one..... for the Month of March.

The great news is by doing this, you will easily get your 1000 contributions for the month ....which counts towards your 15 for 15 WikiTree Challenge!

February 2023 Challenge: Mini Challenge

February 25th through February 28th
A few new Project members have agreed to let us help increase their CC7 by adding profiles to connect to the Global Tree. The goal is not to complete their entire family lines but to offer a small bit of help and provide Complete Profiles as examples.

Pick a Project Member and try to connect to the main tree:

  1. Peg Hill 145
  2. April Stacy, especially Lem Nolan (1890-1916) 298
  3. Cindy (Worley) Beam 554
  4. Jeremy Stone 826
  5. Cynthia (Bryant) Crafton 2350
  6. Tara (Smith) Bentley 742

February 2023 Challenge: Frontier Nursing Service

Frontier Nursing Service is a subproject of the Appalachia Project. This month, we are asking Appalachia Project Members to help add the nurses of the Frontier Nursing Service

The event will start on Wednesday, February 1 and run until Tuesday, February 28, 2023
  1. Watch these videos for the historical visual history of the Frontier Nursing Service.
  2. Add Frontier Nurses, from 1925 through 1929, to WikiTree to completeness & fully connected, See: Completed Profile Checklist - Quarterly Bulletins of the Frontier Nursing Service - 1925 through 1929 AND Quarterly Bulletins of the Frontier Nursing Service - 1930 through 1939
  3. Add Original Members (aka donors), from 1925, to WikiTree to completeness & fully connected, See: Completed Profile Checklist - Frontier Nursing Service Members
Please review the Frontier Nurses Categories and Stickers that are required on all Frontier Nurses profiles.
This isn't a competition but a Project-wide effort to increase the Frontier Nurses on WikiTree.
Add the Name of the Nurse or Member you are working on here, along with your name: We encourage you to work on more than one. :)
