I and two other genealogists are interested in creating a place based study of the families of the North shore of Conception Bay, Newfoundland. The timeframe is about 1696 to 1800. We have chosen the start date based on historical events in which the French set fire to English communities and deported the residents who were not killed in 1696 - 7. Many settler families never returned, a few others did. New families arrived to claim the vacant land at the end of the conflict between England and France in 1713 give or take some years. Who were these families? Our goal is to document the resettlement from Small Point to Ochre Pit Cove outports on the Bay de Verde Peninsula.

HI Brad Finally got around to correcting all the place names. Thanks for your attention to my one name projects

Hi! Just a note. The town was not called Broad Cove, Small Point-Adam's Cove-Blackhead-Broad Cove, Newfoundland in 1800. Newfoundland was not part of Canada until 1949, and the individual towns of Broad Cove AND Small Point AND Adam's Cove AND Blackhead were not amalgamated until 1968. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Point-Adam%27s_Cove-Blackhead-Broad_Cove

I've corrected the names where I noticed the historical inaccuracy, and added the relevant categories so that other people can easily do research on the profiles.

Note that WikiTree policy is to use the correct historical names whenever possible: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/343188/historical-place-names

There were of course several Broad Coves, from the dropdown menu, if you start typing, "Broad Cove, Conception Bay, Newfoundland" is the best historical name. It doesn't follow the category convention of historical districts, but it's accurate.

It's time for the One Place Studies Project Check-In!

We've put together a survey for you to fill out to check in with you, it will only take a moment as there are only a few questions. Filling out the survey lets us know you are still interested in coordinating your study and provides an opportunity for you to share any suggestions you may have for the project.

If you have decided to step away from your study, please reply to this comment to that effect.

Hi Brad, thanks for the suggestions. I thought Verge/Virge because that name shows up in Trinity in the mid to late 1700s: Charles, George and James . Vey /Veys is another possibility. John Veys was in Trinity and died there in Nov 1761. Veys were also at port de Grave but not as many. Veys and Verges might actually be the same name spelt different ways dependent on what the person heard who was writing it down. I also tried to to think about how a Westcountry person might say the name. This is a site that discusses the accent. https://word-connection.com/the-english-west-country-accent/ Here is what Wikipedia has about the accent https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Country_English Both of these sites suggest thay VE could very well be pronounced VO or Vir

I do not understand why Susan Squires is getting credit for a number of corrections/amendments which I have made, especially for Richard Halfyard III - 15

Hi Susan,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi, Susan

We are so pleased you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point. Take your time, keep track of sources, and ask questions. Check here for tips.
