Biography

Joseph Theriot, son of Germain Thériot and Anne Richard, was born between 1695 and 1698, an estimate based upon the birth order of his siblings.[1] He was almost certainly born at Mines, as the family was living there in 1693 and after his estimated birth.

About 1720 in Mines, Acadia, Joseph married Marguerite Melanson, daughter of Jean Melanson and Marguerite Dugas.[1] Joseph apparently had received at least some education in that, like his father, he was able to sign his name. He signed "Terriot" on his children's baptism records at Grand-Pré.

Children (all born at Grand-Pré):[1]
  1. René b: 4 Dec 1721
  2. Joseph (dit Voisin) b: 4 Sep 1723
  3. Marie Josèphe b: 1 Jun 1725
  4. Marguerite b: Abt 1726
  5. Isaac b: 13 Feb 1730
  6. Jean Baptiste Bruno b: 5 Oct 1731

Researcher Paul Delaney believes that Joseph and his family, who were residents of Village Pierre LeBlanc in 1755, were deported from Grand-Pré, even though Joseph does not appear on Winslow's list. His absence could be explained by the fact that he was probably an Acadian deputy. The deputies were not in their villages when the survey for Winslow was taken. The total number of deputies, 37, was added by Winslow at the bottom of his list, without their names.[2] Joseph, Marguerite, and their children Jean-Baptiste, Marie-Marine, Simon, Amand and Anastasie were deported aboard the Sarah and Molly (AKA Sally & Molly) to Virginia in 1755, and from there were exiled to Southampton, England around 1756.[3]

Joseph and Marguerite were casualties of le grand dérangement. Assuming they survived wintering over in the Virginia port, they may well have died from the smallpox epidemic the Acadians were exposed to there before being sent on to England in the spring. They were both deceased before 19 August 1761, the date of their son Isaac's second marriage.[4]

Thériault-310 and Thériot-274 appear to represent the same person because: Same name. Same spouse. Birthdate of 1725 is estimated only. m This is the only Joseph Theriot in Acadie at this time.

Melanson-206 was disconnected from this profile a week or so ago. No reason was given. I am re-connecting them unless someone objects.
