[Citing Richard Ball] - "In the early records of inhabitants of the Cape of Good Hope, the Muster Rolls of Free Persons (Monsterollen van Vrije Luijden), and the Tax Lists (Opgaafrollen) there are 3 Van Wijks featured:
Roelof van Wijk and his wife Trijntje Jans first appear in 1686 in the Cape Town baptismal registers when he and his wife were witnesses at the baptism of the son of Willem van Wijk. Their fist appearance in the muster and opgaaf rolls was in 1688. In the opgaaf rolls of that year they are listed as having one son. They appear regularly over the years. The muster roll of 1692 credits them still with one child, but the Tax roll of the same year list them without any children. They make their last appearance apparently in 1698. See their (Roelof van Wijk) possible timeline (established from various records).
[...] [it is] suggested that this Arij van Wijk was the son of Roelof van Wijk; that he was the one son listed with Roelof and his wife up to and including 1692; after which Arij appears in the records in 1693 with his newly married wife, Cornelia (Hellemans) Helmes and her three children by her previous husband.
Although I do believe that Arij van Wijk was the son of Roelof and Trijntje, I think that this child, listed with them in the Muster Rolls and the Opgaaf Returns, was probably another child. From 1688 to 1692 Arij van Wijk would have been aged 20 through to 242 - I do not think he would have been listed with his parents as a child at that age.
Arij van Wijk was one of the two stamvaders (progenitors) of the Van Wijk family who arrived at the Cape in the 17th Century. The other was Willem van Wijk. It seems likely that they were related to one another but how is not yet apparent.
The earliest mention of Arij at the Cape is from 1693 to 1695 when he and his wife, Cornelia Helmes, are found living in the Cape Town area on a farm which carried 4000 vines. By 1696 they had moved to Stellenbosch where they lived for the rest of his life. By 1700 they had 10,000 vines.
His Origins and Parentage In his will dated 29th April 1713, he stated that he was 45 years old and that he had been born in Amsterdam. According to the indexes in the Amsterdam Archives, there were two Adrian van Wijks baptised at this period, but the following would seem to be his baptism:
Adrian, baptised Nieuwe Kerk 18 January 1668
parents: Roelof Adriaensz van Wijk and Trijntje Jans
witnesses: Hendrik Coenraetsz van der Meijde and Aaltje Adriaens van Wijk
Roelof van Wijk and Trijntje Jans had been living at the Cape since at least since 1686. Presumably he had come to the Cape with his parents.
He Married Cornelia Helmes, the widow of Jan van den Bosch. The date is not known but, on 22nd October 1693 a note in the Orphan Chamber records states that she was then intending to remarry, so this is probably the approximate date. She had three children from her first marriage: Catharina, Johannes and Johanna van den Bosch.
According to her will, dated 29th April 1713, she was then 37 years old and had been born at the Cape.
Their Children:
b1. Roelof van Wijk, baptized 5 September 1694, Cape Town, married Aletta Bezuijdenhout. He died circa July 1746, leaving 8 children.
b2. Aletta van Wijk baptized 15 July 1696, Cape Town, married Johann Kraaij
b3. Willem van Wijk, baptized 19 January 1698, Stellenbosch. When he died around 1771 he left no wife or children and his estate was distributed among his brothers and sisters.
b4. Sara van Wijk, baptized 29 November 1699, Stellenbosch, married Isaak d'Algue, later known as Johannes Dreyer.
b5. Adrianus van Wijk, baptized 25 December 1701, Stellenbosch. He presumably died before 1705 when his younger brother, also named Adriaan, must have been born according to his age (8) and position as given in his parent's will of 1713.
b6. Maria van Wijk born circa 1704, married firstly Jan Joubert and secondly Wolraad Striegel
b7. Adriaan van Wijk, born circa 1705, married Sara Fourie, and left 11 children.
b8. Gerrit van Wijk, baptized 14 December 1707, Stellenbosch, most probably buried before 12 August 1708, Stellenbosch. He was not mentioned in his parent's will of 1713, so had presumably died before that date.
b9. Catarina van Wijk, baptized 20 July 1710, Stellenbosch, married Hendrik Lubbe.
b10. Hester van Wijk, baptized 3 October 1712, Stellenbosch, married Pieter van Zijl.
Death of Arij van Wijk In his will, dated 13th April 1713, he is described as 'sick, confined to bed'. One can speculate that in this year of Smallpox epidemic that this is what he was suffering from -certainly he died in the same year and was buried at Stellenbosch.
After his death, Cornelia Helmes married for the third time to Jacob Coetser, by whom she had two more children. She died between 23rd May and 21st June 1720. [2][3][4]
Arij van Wijk, one of Adam Tas’ supporters in his struggle against WA van der Stel, became the owner of Schinderkuijl in 1705, hence the front gable with its fancy A-frame and lovely plasterwork. It was also Arij who, by planting vines, transformed Schinderkuijl/Leeuwenkuijl into one of the early wine farms. Following its subdivision in 1800, the farm’s name was changed from Schinderkuijl to Leeuwenkuijl. The word “kuijl” refers to the watering holes that were found in what is currently known as the Mosselbank River and the Hans Lourens River. Since the area around Leeuwenkuijl provided plenty of resting places – public areas where farmers and their cattle could rest and drink water – many farmers chose to spend the night here. [13]
Occupation
Burgher & farmer[14] at "Kijkemvallei" in Stellenbosch[4][14]
Note: His will is written in 1713 and filed in 1713 so had to have died in 1713 as he signed the will in 1713 and the filing of the will would only happen after his death. Also in 1712 he is listed on the muster roll of free men with his wife and 8 children (2 sons and 3 daughters and then elder son Roelof van Wyk on his own line), then in 1713 his wife is listed as the widow of Ary van Wyk together with their 8 children on the muster roll of free men (2 sons and 3 daughters and then elder son Roelof van Wyk on his own line). See images of the will and these muster rolls attached to profile.[15][16][17]
Place: Stellenbosch, Cape (Probably from smallpox) [4][18][14] / [Western Cape, South Africa][5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Adrian Roelofz by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Adrian Roelofz:
Thanks Philip for fixing this profile, there seem to be a general mix up between two Aries/ Adriaan.
I remember seen an Arie van Wyk the son of Willem van Wyk the other Stemvader. These two seem to get mixed up. Catharine Hillebrandt was the wife of the other, not this Arie.
Vanwyk-1 and Van Wijk-150 appear to represent the same person because: Van Wijk-150 should be the target profile to merge into as it has the correct spelling of the LNAN (even though it has the higher number). For the same data (spouse - Cornelia Helm). The other data can be confirmed after merging. Not that big of an issue.
Van Wijk-150 and Vanwyk-1 are not ready to be merged because: There are a few differences like the wives of the two profile are not the same, dates differ. Have to reach info first before merging.
