Bob Dylan is a legendary American singer-songwriter who has profoundly influenced popular music and culture since the 1960s. His poetic, introspective lyrics and innovative blend of folk, rock, and other genres revolutionized songwriting, moving beyond simple love songs to address social issues, politics, philosophy, and the human condition. Widely regarded as one of history's greatest songwriters, Dylan's impact earned him numerous accolades, including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, making him the first musician to receive this honor primarily for songwriting.
Robert Allen, child of Abe Zimmerman and Beatty Stone, was born on 24 May 1941, at St Mary's Hospital, in Duluth, Minnesota.[1][2]
In the 1950 census, Robert (age 8) was the son of Abe H Zimmerman in Hibbing, St. Louis, Minnesota.[3]
Robert attended Hibbing High School, in Hibbing, St Louis, Minnesota.[4]
Bob later changed his name to Bob Dylan. When asked about the name change in a 2004 interview he said, "You're born, you know, the wrong names, wrong parents. I mean, that happens. You call yourself what you want to call yourself. This is the land of the free."[5]
Dylan's paternal grandparents, Zigman and Anna Zimmerman, came to the United States from Odessa, in the Russian Empire (now Ukraine). His maternal grandparents, Ben and Florence Stone, were Lithuanian Jews who arrived in the United States in 1902.
Robert married in 1965 in Manhattan, New York.[6]
As a musician, Bob Dylan has sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time.
