Rowland was the son of William Coytemore of Coetmore, Caernarvonshire and his first wife Jane Williams. He was likely to have been born in Caernarvonshire, quite likely at Coetmore.[1][2] His birth date is not known and has been guesstimated.
Life
Rowland moved to London, where he became a mariner. He captained ships of the East India Company. He settled at Wapping, Middlesex.[1][2]
In 1609 Rowland was the recipient of a grant in the 2nd charter of the Virigina Company.[3] (Douglas Richardson wrongly gives the year as 1607.[1][2])
In 1618 he and other mariners contributed to the cost of building a new chapel at Wapping, Middlesex.[1][2]
Marriages and Children
Rowland married three times. On 13 January 1590/1 he married Christian Haynes at Stepney, Middlesex.[1][2]
Christian may have been the mother of a daughter of Rowland's, first name unknown, who married William Rainborowe/Rainsborough, and who died, having had a son,[4] before December 1614, when her husband remarried.[5] (Rowland described William in his Will as a son-in-law.[6]) Dates mean that she must have been a daughter of Rowland's first or second marriage, with it being more likely that her mother was Rowland's first wife.
Christian may also have been the mother of another daughter of Rowland, who married a William Ball: his Will refers to his grandson William Ball, son of William Ball.[6]
Christian Haynes died before 28 March 1594/5, when Rowland married Dorothy (widow of William Harris of Wapping, and daughter of Dorothy Lane) at St Mary's, Whitechapel, London. They had two daughters,[1][2] both named as daughters of Dorothy and "Rowland Quaytmore" in the January 1605/6 Will of their maternal grandmother:[7]
Rowland's second wife died before 27 December 1610, when, at Harwich, Essex, he married for a third time, his third wife being Katherine Myles.[8] She was the daughter of Robert Myles of Suffolk and Parnel Reve, and the widow of Thomas Gray of Harwich, Essex.[1][2] They had at least two children:
Rowland's Will was dated 5 June 1626 and proved on 24 November that year,[1][2][6][9] so he died between those dates. His third wife survived him, settling in New England in about 1636.[1][2][8]
Rowland's Will shows him owning properties in Essex. He describes himself as a mariner of Wapping, Middlesex. In it he names:[6][9]
his wife Katherine, appointed sole executor
his children:
Thomas (under 21)
his daughter Elizabeth Coytmore (under 21), probably the Elizabeth whose mother was his third wife
his "son-in-law" (stepson) Thomas Gray
his kinsman "Hugh Hughs als [alias] Gwyn", son of his sister Elizabeth
his grandson William Ball, son of William Ball
his "daughter-in-law" Dorothy Lamberton, possibly a granddaughter of Thomas Gray, first husband of his third wife.
Research Notes
Daughter Sarah
In a 1952 article, Roderick Bissell Jones suggests that Rowland's daughter Sarah, from his second marriage, may be the Sarah who married Hugh Williams.[10] Hugh Williams did not marry until after 1641 and his wife, Sarah Williams, was described as a grandchild of Katherine (Miles) (Gray) Coytmore, Rowland's third wife.[11]
Daughters Elizabeth
Rowland, as shown above, appears to have had two daughters called Elizabeth by different marriages. His Will refers to only one, calling her "Elizabeth Coytmore", who was under age when he made the Will.[6] This suggests that the older Elizabeth, who was daughter of his second wife, either died or married before he made his Will.

Magna Carta Trails
Badged (2015) Richardson-documented trail to Quincy (MCA I:559-562 COYTEMORE):
The will does not, as far as I can see, indicate a birth place. Rowland Coytemore moved to what is now London (the Wapping area) during his lifetime. His parents and grandparents were of Caernarvonshire, and his father William was of Coetmor, Caernarvonshire. After his mother's death, his father remarried, his second wife being Welsh, from Presaddfed in Anglesey. We also know that at least one of Rowland's sisters stayed in Wales. There are probably more sources which suggest a Welsh birthplace, though I have not researched them yet, but the indications of a Welsh birthplace, in Caernarvonshire, are strong.
