Deirdre Helberg was born about 1960 in Bulawayo, Rhodesia, daughter of Charles Nicolaas Helberg (1936–2021) and Yvonne Shirley Schultz (1937–2012).
Deirdre (20) married Paul Snook (31) (born on May 14, 1950 in Bridport, Dorset, England, United Kingdom; son of John Snook and Olive Grace Phyllis (Brickett) Snook) on December 11, 1981 in Kensington, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa.
Their daughter was Patricia Snook (1988– ). Deirdre is the custodian and manager of the "Helbergs of Southern Africa", one name study. The tree starts in the late 1660’s as settlers set out for the new world of SOUTH AFRICA from many countries in Europe.
I have German/Prussian, Dutch, French, Flemish, English, Swedish ancestry. My ancestors were not content to reside in the new colony at the Cape, they joined the Great Trek of AH Potgieter in 1835 and kept trekking north, all the way to the Rhodesia’s (now Zimbabwe & Zambia) where they farmed amid dangerous conditions, with several killed by lions & taken by crocodiles while fording rivers

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s VERY IMPORTANT to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Aren't our pioneering ancestors fascinating!
Perhaps you would like to join the South African Roots Project by answering the G2G join post here? Besides links to sources, there are help pages that might also be useful. There are many of us here and I see you've already met Ronel 💚 (she's wonderful - she helped get me started on WikiTree)
Many / most of the South African genealogical lines and profiles of the eighteenth and seventeenth periods (and earlier) have already been made, so it doesn't take long before you'll find your branches connect to those already here. Many have also been validated with primary sources. Adding sources is quick and easy with the RootsSearch tool which is found by clicking the words at the very bottom of the right hand column on older profiles (Open privacy setting). Also super helpful is the South African Quick Links page.
After joining the SA Roots project you can then sign up to any of the sub-projects, such as Anglo Boer War, 1820 Settlers, Cape of Good Hope, Voortrekkers or British Home Children. Note however, that it's not required that you be in a project or subproject to be able to contribute to profiles from those periods in time / location / projects, but it does help to refer to the project's help pages for guidelines.
I am also available to answer any questions you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.
Happy tree climbing

This is Paul, Deirdres husband. I have recently populated her Wikitree with information we have uploaded to Ancestry, Geni and Family Search. I am sure there are mistakes however, if you could kindly cast you eye over some of the source inputs, we have entered your advice or tutelage would be most welcome. The main reason for seeking your guidance concerns DNA. Deirdre has uploaded an autosomal result from Ancestry, she also tested her father before he died using an Ancestry kit. This year she took an mtDNA test with FamilytreeDNA which has been uploaded. I tried to upload her father’s DNA results to Wiki but I might have made is mistake. Could you kindly check if I uploaded Deirdres DNA test to her father or if I failed to upload his DNA test against his name? Alternatively, could you kindly advise how to we should upload his Ancestry DNA to Helberg-94? Second question, I contacted every manager with a South African lineage, there were several managers who have not been active who did not reply. I suspect they are no longer with us as a result of Covid, is there a way of asking Wiki to close or transfer their account to someone who is living? Stay safe Paul
Yes absolutely, I'll take a look and get back to you with suggestions and help with the DNA. For the managers where you don't get a reply - here's the official WikiTree help page for that : Help:Unresponsive Profile Managers. The great thing about being a collaborative shared single-family tree is that although someone else is a/the profile manager doesn't stop you from contributing to the profile, have a look at this page here which explains the role of a profile manager : Help:Profile Manager
I hope this helps!

Keep safe and have a great weekend!
How do I add or upload this infomation or the connection to Wikitree. Note I am still using Deirdres log in.
To add your DNA (and therefore the connection on all your accentors profiles) you'll have to create a profile for yourself. To do that, click "Add spouse" here on Dierdre's profile, there's a field for you to add the email address - warning: there might be issues if you use the same email as you have used for Dierdre's profile, it might be best to change the email address for this account before you add the email address to your new profile.)
Here's a link to our help pages about editing your email address.
Here's our help page about how to get started with DNA which has a link in the first section to add your DNA test results.
Have fun!
Thank you for your participation in the South African family tree. I notice you have been with WikiTree for some time now so this is a belated welcome from the South African team :)
Unfortunately duplicates were made for you family tree. I do not want to overwhelm you so lets take them a few at a time.
Merges was initiated for some of them ........ Kindly see to them first and let me know when you are done. Once you have done so I will again see if there are more duplicates
If you need help in any way do contact me and I will do my best to assist.
Also please read the pages for the South African profiles to assist you in the finer detail regarding place names Here is the link for your convenience : https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:South_African_Roots/Sources2
Under the Home page we have also outlaid the finer detail of adding sources and how to add the links to profiles. Project: Suid Afrikaanse Portaal : https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Suid_Afrikaanse_Portaal explains in Afrikaans the protocol we use on WikiTree.
