Tips
1. A great way to learn about profiles, how to source, how to research and use WikiTree is to participate in challenges. Many of you took part in the Clean-A-Thon this weekend and so far feedback in G2G is that people had a lot of fun and felt like they were also doing a lot to help WikiTree. So, tip number one is look for challenges in the G2G threads and participate!
2. Tip number 2 is, Integrators has a new Integrators Challenge that will start on May 1. The thread to join will be posted on April 30th around 11 am Eastern Time. This Challenge is to find threads at least 60 days old in G2G that have enough data to make a profile or to complete a profile that was lacking birth dates, death dates, sources, bios so was incomplete. Once you find a thread the first thing to do is to see if a profile exists for that person. Do this by going to the Find Surnames Menu and searching for the person. If no profile exists create one from the info in the thread. If one exists, and it is not complete, complete it. When you hit save if the Challenge Tracker does not appear at the top of the page, make a small change and save again, now it should appear.
Select Integrators Challenge.
Select from one of these 3 reasons or create your own!
Reason 1: New profile from G2G (add URL)
Reason 2: Improved from info in G2G (add URL)
Reason 3: Answered in G2G about profile (add URL)
Press add action.
You are now counted in the challenge stats!
Information about the new Integrators Challenge can be found here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Integrators_Challenge
To help everyone get started we will be adding some links to possible threads which can be found here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Integrators_Project_Challenge_Outline We will be adding these throughout the month so check back often. As we see a profile is created we will delete the available links.
3. Have almost enough to make a profile just missing a few things? Great resources are:
a. Obituaries in newspapers these often have birth, parent, sibling, and children information
b. Military service records like Fold 3 has. Many libraries have online links to this site.
c. Census records
d. Church records
e. Find A Grave can be used for clues but should not be the only source because often the data is not correct
f. Family Search records are good but the user trees should be used only to find clues not as sources
g. Ancestry databases but not the user trees which once again can be used only to find clues not as sources
4. Most of all, have fun and help WikiTree at the same time!
