Stephen Snow, third son and the fifth of twelve children of Nicholas Snow and Mayflower passenger Constance Hopkins, was born about 1636.[1] He was probably born in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony and moved with his family before 1645 to the area of nearby Cape Cod known as Eastham, first called Nauset, in Barnstable County.[2]
His father was listed among the first inhabitants of Eastham on 22 May 1655 and Stephen Snow was on the list of inhabitants admitted before 1675.[3]
Marriages and Children
Stephen married first in Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts on 28 October 1663 to Susannah (Deane) Rogers,[4][5] widow of Joseph Rogers and daughter of Stephen Deane[1] and Elizabeth Ring.[2] They had children, all born in Eastham:
Bathshua, born 25 July 1664,[4] died between 21 May 1706 and 7 Oct 1707, married John King[6][7]
Hannah, born 2 January 1666,[4] died 23 June 1737, married William Cole[6]
Micajah, born 22 December 1669,[4] died between 25 December 1753 (will) and 23 July 1754 (probate),[7] married Mercy Young[6]
Bethiah, born 1 July 1672,[4] died after 31 July 1734, married John Smith[6]
After Susannah's death (date unknown), Stephen married on 9 April 1701 in Eastham to Mary Bigford,[1][4][8] the couple had no children.[6] Mary was born Salisbury 1 Nov 1653, the daughter of Edward and Judith (___) Cottle and had first married Samuel Bickford[9] who probably died in Nantucket between 1674 and 7 Apr 1701.[10]
Property
On 5 April 1669, Susannah and Stephen Snow, along with Susanna's two sisters (Elizabeth Twining and Miriam Deane), deeded lands from their father's estate to Peter Worden.[11]
On 8 June 1674, Thomas Rogers deeded to Susanna Snow, widow of his brother James Rogers, and her husband Steven Snow, all property that belonged to James Snow, whether inherited or given to him by the town.[12]
Nicholas Snow named his wife and children in his will dated 14 November 1676 and proved 5 March 1676/7, giving his son "Steven" twenty acres at Pochett, ten acres at Satuckett, an acre and a half of meadow at the boat meadow and part of a meadow between Josiah Cook and Eel creek. Nicholas gave his wife 30 acres "for her disposal for the comfort of her life, but if she need it now, and leave it undisposed, I give it then to my son Steven Snow."[1]
Death and Estate
Stephen died 17 December 1705 in Eastham, Massachusetts.[4] His second wife, Mary, was living on 21 May 1706, when an agreement between Stephen's heirs was signed. Her date of death is not known.
The will of Stephen Snow of Eastham, Massachusetts, dated 2 May 1691 and proved 10 January 1705/6, named his wife, sons Micajah and Ebeneezer Snow, and daughter Mehitable, and appointed his son, Micajah Snow, to be his sole executor.[2][6] Also on 10 January 1705/6, Micajah Snow presented to the Barnstable County Probate Court the inventory of his father's estate.[13] The inventory, taken 20 December 1705, totaled about £154, 15s. 7d.[6]
Stephen's estate had been distributed by 21 May 1706 when a receipt to executor Micajah Snow was drawn up. The receipt listed Stephen's heirs: the widow Mary, Ebenezer Snow, John King, William Cole, John Smith and Mehitable Snow. The receipt was signed and acknowledged by all except William Cole.[6] This document is important as it proves the marriages of Stephen's daughters.
Research Notes
Alternate date of first marriage (13 Dec 1665)[14] is likely an error according to George Bowman.[1][6]
