Gilbert Talbot, K.G. was the second son of John Talbot, K. G., 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury, and Elizabeth Butler,[1] Douglas Richardson states that he was born in 1452, but it is not clear what the sourcing for this is.[2][3] As his father had vast landholdings and no birth record has been found, Gilbert's birthplace is unknown.
Gilbert served as Sheriff of Shropshire, 1485-1486,[4] Privy Councillor, Knight of the Body to King Henry VII,[5] Chamberlain of North Wales, and as Lieutenant of Calais, 1508-1515.[2]
When Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond (future King Henry VII), landed in 1485, he was met by Gilbert in Newport, Shropshire. Gilbert, who headed the right wing of the vanguard at the Battle of Bosworth,[2] was badly wounded during the battle,[6] and was knighted by Henry on the battlefield.[5]
In 1486, Gilbert was granted the manors at Grafton and Upton Warren, Worcestershire which had been forfeited by Humphrey Stafford,[2][7][8] along with several other manors, including Hanbury, Bromsgrove, King's Norton, and elsewhere.[5][6] In 1487, Gilbert fought at the battle of Stoke:[2] for his valor in battle, he was made a knight banneret.[5] In 1489 he commanded part of the English army at the Siege of Dixmude in Flanders.[2][5]
On 8 May 1491, Gilbert was created the 246th Knight of the Garter.[9] Gilbert was a legatee in the 1492 will of his uncle Humphrey Talbot, Knt., by which he inherited the lordship of Glossop for life.[5] In 1504, Gilbert was appointed one of the ambassadors to Pope Julius II.[2][5] In 1513 Gilbert was granted the manor of Burghfield, Berkshire by the king,[2][10] after it had been forfeited by the attainder of John de la Pole.[5]
Gilbert married first Elizabeth Greystoke, widow of Thomas le Scrope, 5th Lord Scrope of Masham, and daughter of Ralph Greystoke, 5th Lord Greystoke,[1] and Elizabeth FitzHugh.[2] They had children:
Gilbert's wife, Elizabeth, was living 20 December 1483.[2] When she died (date unknown), she was buried at Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.[2][6]
Gilbert married second about 1490 to Audrey Cotton,[1] widow of Thomas Barton, Esq., and Richard Gardiner, Knt.. She was the daughter of William Cotton, Knt., and Alice Abbott.[2] They had one son:
Gilbert's wife Audrey died about 1505.[2]
Gilbert died 16 August 1517 and was buried at Whitchurch, Shropshire.[2] He was succeeded by his son Gilbert in November 1517,[5] and his son John succeeded after Gilbert's death.[7]
