Biography

Elizabeth STALHAM was born about 1597 in Norwich, Norfolk, England.[citation needed]

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that Elizabeth was born in 1609 at Tombland, Norwich, Norfolk, England, daughter of John Stalham (b. 16 Apr 1564) and Alicia Gibson (b. c 1570, d. a 1617). [citation needed]
The Boston Transcript writer says "November 1597"
The Find-A-Grave link has a photograph of a baptism register with the date 11 Nov 1597.

She married Robert Williams, son of Stephen Williams and Mary Margaret Cooke, on 11 December 1628 at Norwich, Norfolk, England.[citation needed]

Another source claims they married before 1630 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England[1]

Elizabeth Stalham (by Williams family tradition has also been known as "Stratton") sailed with her husband Robert Williams and 4 children for America in the ship "Rose" from Great Yarmouth, landing in New England in the year 1637. [citation needed]

Elizabeth died 28 Jul 1674 in Roxbury, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British Colonial America. [citation needed]

According to family tradition, Robert's wife "was of a good family and had been delicately reared; and when her husband desired to come to America, though a truly religious woman, she dreaded the undertaking and shrank from the hardships to be encountered. While the subject was still under discussion, she had a dream foreshadowing that if she went to America, she would become the mother of a long line of worthy ministers of the Gospel. The dream so impressed her that she rose up cheerfully and began to prepare to leave her home and kindred for the new and distant land".[2]

Children:

  1. Elizabeth Williams (1620 - 1662)
  2. Edward Williams (1627 - 1688)
  3. Deborah Williams Turner (1628 - 1676)

  5. Samuel Williams (1632 - 1698)
  6. John Williams (1635 - 1658)
  7. Isaac Williams (1638 - 1708)
  8. Stephen Williams (1640 - 1720)

A "woman of piety and force, a fit helpmate for her Puritan husband"[1]

Elizabeth died in 1674 and was buried at Eliot Burying Ground, Roxbury. The cemetery is also know as Eustis Street Cemetery. Her memorial has pictures, some biographical material and links to those of her husband and chldren.

Elizabeth Stalham died on 28 July 1674 at Roxbury, Suffolk, MA.[3]

Notes

Donald Lines Jacobus, "The Granberry Family and Allied Families" (Hartford 1945), page 347, gives both surnames Stratton and Stalham for Elizabeth.
N698Elizabeth Stalham (by Williams family tradition has also been known as "Stratton") sailed with her husband Robert Williams and 4 children for America in the ship "Rose" from Great Yarmouth, landing in New England in the year 1637.
The dream so impressed her that she rose up cheerfully and began to prepare to leave her home and kindred for the new and distant land".

Note we seem to be lacking any evidence that John Stalham's daughter was the same person as Robert Williams's wife. The gerrymandering of the Stalham dates looks like an attempt to make things fit better. Not sure who made this statement, but this source does tie her to Robert Williams: Harrison Williams, "The Life, Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Williams of Roxbury", (Washington DC 1934), page 18.

From husband's profile: Williams, Harrison.

Robert married Elizabeth Stalham (or Stratton) sometime before the year 1630 in England, although no record has yet to be found of their marriage date or place.[1][5][6][7] [8]

Elizabeth was baptized November 11, 1597 at St. George, Tombland, Norwich, probably the daughter of John Stalham of St. George, Tombland, Norwich, County Norfolk and his wife Alicia Gibson.[1] "Proof of this identification, however, has not been found."[5]

There seems to be some back-and-forth in the bio about her claimed parents. Should they be marked as uncertain?

Stalham-20 and Stalham-9 appear to represent the same person because: Birth Location Conflict is mentioned in Stalhan -9 , same husband and death death. Brown Gen Book information from Richard Wheeler, author of History of Stonington, 4 years before writing that book.

I am editing the Biography section of this profile, under children, where daughter Elizabeth is currently shown as Elizabeth Williams Cutter. The marriage of this child Elizabeth to Richard Cutter is currently disputed, per comments found in profile for daughter (Williams-54210) and Richard Cutter's wife, Elizabeth... see Unknown-380010.
Stalham-24 and Stalham-9 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, matching husbands and sons

Stratton-277 and Stalham-9 appear to represent the same person because: According to Harrison Williams, "The Life, Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Williams of Roxbury" the wife of Robert Williams and mother of his children was Elizabeth Stalham. Donald Lines Jacobus in "The Granberry Family and Allied Families" gives both surnames for her, Stratton or Stalham. Please merge into Stalham, and show Stratton as an 'other last name'. Thanks.
