Biography

Ralph was the son of Robert Shriley of Repton in Derbyshire. The name of his mother is not known. Douglas Richardson gives an estimate that he was born in about 1495.[1][2][3]

Ralph married Amy Lolle, daughter and co-heir of William Lolle of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.[1][2][3] Based on his son Francis's age at Ralph's death, the marriage was almost certainly before 1526. Ralph and Amy had two children:

  • Francis,[1][2][3] said to be 9 years and more in the IPM following his father's death,[4] so born about 1526
  • Eleanor, who married Thomas Vernon and Nicholas Browne[1][2]

Ralph was an executor of the will of his father-in-law, in which he was named as one of the legatees,[1][2] being bequeathed lands at "Barow and Mesam".[4]

Ralph died on 15 January 1535 (26 Henry VIII),[1][2][3] a date given in his IPM.[4] In his will he left lands at Worthington and Tonge, Leicestershire to his wife for life,[4] and on her death to his son Francis.[3]

His widow may have subsequently married Ralph Secheverell: in the 1540s, Thomas Vernon, who married Ralph's daughter Eleanor, sued "Amice, late the wife of Ralph Secheverell" for money promised on his marriage.[5]
