Osborne Surname Name Meaning, Origin, History, & Etymology The name is Viking in origin, as it derives from the Norse personal name Asbiorn (or Åsbjørn), which itself is composed of the elements as (god) and bjorn (bear). It was present in England before the Norman Conquest of 1066 AD. It was later reinforced by the Norman name Osbern. This is a baptismal/patronymic surname meaning “the son of Osbern”, which is an ancient personal (first name).

The word "god bear" may have been a reference to the colossal Ursus spelaeus, an ancient bear that once roamed the plains of Europe after the last ice age.

The name had appeared in England before the Norman Conquest. The wife of Egbert, the king of Wessex, was called Osbern. But Osbern acheved a greater prominence in England through the Normans, first because of William FitzOsbern and then because of the spread of Norman Osberns in the Domesday Book. Another William FitzOsbern led a popular uprising in London in 1196.

However, another source (the book an Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names by William Arthur published in 1857) asserts the name is Saxon in origin, deriving from the words hus (house) and bearn (a child), meaning an adopted child. Two famous bearers of the personal name were killed in the same battle in 1054 AD: Osbern Pentecost, a Norman fighting for Macbeth, and Osbern, the son of Earl Siward, with his father at the head of the victorious Northumbrians. The first name Osbern was common in the Domesday Book of 1086 AD, which was a survey of England and Wales ordered by William the Conqueror.

The family first became established in Kent, England, where they descended from a branch of the Fitz-Osberne family, where a one Thomas Osberne was listed on a writ of Quo warranto for the Abbey of Dartford. The original progenitor of the family was Osberne Fitz-Letard who owned the lands of Odo in Bayeaux in 1086 AD. Many people with this name descended from Sarum in Normandy, France.

Notes Osbern the Steward From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Osbern the Steward, known in French as Osbern de Crépon († about 1040), was the Steward of two Dukes of Normandy and the father of William FitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford, one of William the Conqueror's closest counsellors.

Biography Osbern was the son of Herfast de Crepon and the nephew of Gunnora, Duchess of Normandy, first the mistress and then second wife of Richard I of Normandy. Under Robert the Magnificent (1027–1035), he had the role of Steward or Seneschal. He kept this role after the Duke's death in 1035. He became one of the legal protectors of the young successor to the duchy, William the Bastard, known later as William the Conqueror, then aged 8.

The young Duke William was in danger, as other members of the ducal family were trying to assassinate him to regain power in the duchy, and the Norman barons were rebelling. Osbern was murdered at Le Vaudreuil in the winter of 1040-1041, while protecting the young Duke in the child's bedroom. According to Guillaume de Jumièges, his throat was cut by William, son of Roger I of Montgomery. Barnon de Glos-la-Ferrières avenged the death of his lord by killing the murderer.

Historians of the Normans disagree on the origin of the benefices held by Osbern, specifically which of them came from his father Herfast and which via his marriage to Emma, daughter of the powerful Count Rodulf of Ivry and sister of Hugues, Bishop of Bayeux. He possessed land widely spread across Normandy: in the Bessin at Crépon, at Hiémois (near Falaise, near the confluence of the rivers Seine and Andelle, around Cormeilles, in Talou, in Pays d'Ouche at Breteuil, and at La Neuve-Lyre.

Family and descendants Osbern married Emma d'Ivry, daughter of Count Rodulf of Ivry, who was half-brother of Richard I, Duke of Normandy. The children included :

William Fitz Osbern (ca 1020–1071), 1st Earl of Hereford ; Osbern FitzOsbern († end of 1103), Bishop of Exeter in 1072 .

Spelling Variations Some spelling variants or names with similar etymologies include Osborn, Osbourne, Osbornne, Osbourn, Osburne, Osburn, Osberne, and others.

Early Bearers of the Surname The first documented bearer of this last name was Henry Osbern who was documented in the Camrbridge Assize Court document in 1260 AD. The Hundred Rolls of 1273 AD, a census of Wales and England, known in Latin as Rotuli Hundredorum lists two bearers of this surname: Gerard filius (son of) Oseberne in county Huntingdonshire, Robert and Oseberne in county Oxfordshire. Walter Osborn was documented in Cambridge in 1310 AD. Andrew Hosborn was found in Somerset in 1327 AD. Elena Usburne was documented in Yorkshire in the Poll Tax Rolls of 1381 AD. Some early marriages involving this surname include Ann Osburn to George Avius at St. George’s Hanover Square in 1790, William Osbon to Mary Thackham in 1792, Lucy Orsborn to Frances Phillips in 1797 and William Osburne to Elizabeth Yates in 1798..

William the Conqueror 1066-1087 Parentage and Early Life

England's first Norman king, the formidable William I, was born in 1028 at Falaise Castle. Wiliam was the illegitimate son of Robert 'the Devil' or the Magnificent, Duke of Normandy and his mistress Herleve, (sometimes called Arlette) the daughter of Fullbert, a tanner of Falaise. Before history renamed him the Conqueror he was more commonly known to his contemporaries as William the Bastard. Herleve was reported to have attracted Duke Robert with her dancing, in some accounts, he is said to have first caught sight of her while she was washing her linen in the castle moat.

The Norman dynasty had been founded by Robert's ancestor Rollo or Hrolf the Ganger, a Viking raider chief, who was granted the duchy by Charles the Simple, King of France, in 911, at the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, in exchange for feudal allegiance and conversion to Christianity at which he took the baptismal name of Robert.

William's mother, Herleve, also had a daughter Adelaide, to Duke Robert. Although they had a long relationship, the gap in their social standing rendered marriage out of the question and Herleve was married off to one of Robert's vassals, Herluin, a knight. From this marriage, Herleve produced two further sons, Robert, who later became Count of Mortain and Odo, destined to become Bishop of Bayeux and Earl of Kent and also to play a part in England's history.

William Fitz Osbern (c. 1020 – 22 February 1071), Lord of Breteuil, in Normandy, was a relative and close counsellor of William the Conqueror.

His father was the steward of his cousin Duke Robert I of Normandy. When Robert gave his duchy to his young son, William (the Conqueror), Osbern was one of Duke William's guardians. Osbern was killed in William's bedroom, defending the boy against an assassination attempt around 1040. Osbern's properties in Normandy, including the honors of Pacy and Breteuil, inherited through his wife, the daughter of the half brother of Duke Richard I of Normandy, was passed on to his son, William FitzOsbern.

William Fitz Osbern was the son of Osbern de Crepon, the Steward, and Albreda de Bayeau. Grandson of Herfast. He was also the nephew of Gunnora, Duchess of Normandy, second wife of Richard I of Normandy. Brother of Osbern, Bishop of Exeter.

William fitz Osbern was probably raised at the court of his cousin and namesake Duke William, and like his father, became one of the ducal stewards. He was one of the earliest and most vigorous advocates of the invasion of England, and tradition holds that he convinced the doubters amongst the Norman barons of the feasibility of the invasion.

Claria Edith Gragg's last name is the shortend form of McGregor

An Act of the Scottish Parliament from 1617 stated[9] (translated into modern English):

“ It was ordained that the name of MacGregor should be abolished and that the whole persons of that name should renounce their name and take some other name and that they nor none of their name and that they nor none of their posterity should call themselves Gregor or MacGregor under pain of death .... that any person or persons of the said clan who has already renounced their names or hereafter shall renounce their names or if any of their children or posterity shall at any time hereafter assume or take to themselves the name of Gregor or MacGregor .... that every such person or persons assuming or taking to themselves the said name .... shall incurr the pain of death which pain shall be executed upon them without favour. ” Despite the savage treatment of the MacGregors, they had nevertheless fought for the king during the Scottish Civil War.[3] Two hundred men of the Clan Gregor fought for the Earl of Glencairn in what was known as Glencairn's rising, against the Commonwealth.[3] In recognition of this, Charles II of England repealed the proscription of the name, but William of Orange reimposed it when Charles's brother James VII was deposed.[3]

This makes Ragnhild the 23rd great grandmother of Lance.

Ragnhild (Ragnhilda) is considered to be a daughter of Óláfr Guðrøðarson, King of Mann and the Isles. The Chronicles of the Kings of Mann and the Isles (Chronica Regum Manniæ et Insularum) a near contemporary source written c. 1260, provides (English translation): "In the year 1102, Olave, son of Godred Crouan, began to reign over all the Isles, and he reigned forty years. He was a man of peace, and was in such close alliance with all the kings of Ireland and Scotland, that no one ventured to disturb the kingdom of the Isles during his time. He took a wife named Affrica, daughter of Fergus of Galloway, by whom he had issue Godred. He had also many concubines, by whom he had issue three sons; Reginald, Lagman, and Harold, and many daughters, one of whom was married to Sumerled, Lord of Argyll; and this was the cause of the ruin of the whole kingdom of the Isles; for he had issue by her four sons, Dugald, Reginald, Angus, and Olave, of whom we shall speak more fully hereafter."[1] While the Chronica Regum Manniæ et Insularum is notoriously bias towards the Crovan dynasty there is no reason to doubt the veracity in regards to her birth. There is no certainty regarding the relationships of Óláfr. He is known to have had, at least, two "wives"; a daughter of Haakon Paulsson, Jarl of Norðreyjar (Northern Isles) based out of Orkney, and Affraic, a daughter of Fergus, Lord of Galloway. Both these likely to have been to support various alliances. His marriage to Affraic is presumed to have occurred no earlier than 1130 and shortly before Ragnhild marries Somerled. Ragnhild is believed to have been born sometime early in the 12th Century and likely c. 1115. There is no certainty on her birth location although the likely candidates are either Dublin or Mann, the capitals of the Kingdom. The marriage, to Somerled, was to cause the disintegration of the Kingdom of Mann and the Isles, as mentioned in the Chronicle although the stance taken in the manuscript is decidedly bias.

From the collapse of the Danish Empire under King Cnut, c. 1035 AD, until the Treaty of Perth, in 1266, the Western Isles, and parts of the Northern and Western mainland of Scotland, were controlled by various rulers who owed their allegiance to the Kings of Norway and were part of the Norwegian empire. It was ruled as two separate jurisdictions; Norðreyjar (Northern Isles; Orkneys, Shetlands, Skye and the Outer Hebrides), ruled from the Orkneys, and Suðreyjar (Southern Isles, including the Inner Hebrides), ruled from various locations but generally Dublin or the Isle of Mann. The Norwegian rulers, so removed from any control by Norway, often ruled as semi-independent lords changing allegiances to suit the geo-political circumstances of the day. Such was the case at the end of the 11th century. When Olaf Haraldsson, King of Norway, died in 1093, civil war erupted between his son, Magnus Olafsson (Wikpedia) and his nephew, Haakon Magnusson (Wikipedia). The war ended with the death of Haakon Magnusson in 1095 but the effects were felt throughout the Norwegian empire with many nobles failing to acknowledge Magnus Olafsson as King. It appears that one such dominion to rebel was Suðreyjar as, around the late 11th Century, the region erupts into violent rebellion against the ruling Viking Crovan dynasty (Wikipedia). The leader of this dynasty was (wikitree - Godred Crovan, Godred Crovan) who appears during the Norwegian Invasion of England in 1066. He had gained control of the southern part of Suðreyjar (Dublin, Mann and Islay particularly) in 1091 and calls himself King of Dublin and the Isles. Although his lineage is obscure, it seems likely he was Gaelic/Norwegian, believed to be descended from Uí Ímair (House of Ivar). Ireland was devastated by the plague in 1094/1095 and, either as a result of this or an uprising by Muircheartach Ua Briain, or both, Godfred fled to Mann, which appears to have been his major centre. He died, of the plague, in 1095 and his death is well recorded in a number of contemporary or near contemporary sources. Local tradition on both Islay and Mann suggest he died in one or the other and is buried, either on Islay, Iona or Mann, with many legends arising. He gave rise to the Síol nGofraidh (seed of Godfred). The conflict brought Magnus Olafsson, King of Norway, now secure in Norway, to the Isles to restore Norwegian authority. Based out of his base in the Orkneys he campaigned around the Irish Sea in 1098 and 1099 and raided through the Northern and Southern Isles, ensuring Norwegian control, of the Isles, by a treaty with the Scottish king (1098 - Edgar I (Eagar mac Mhaoil Chaluim)). Based out of Mann, Magnus had a number of forts and houses built on the island and probably also obtained suzerainty of Galloway. He sailed to Wales later in his expedition (1099/1100), winning control of Anglesey (and possibly Gwynedd's submission) after repelling the invading Norman (English) forces from the island. Magnus also recognised, in an alliance, Muircheartach Ua Briain as his lord in Dublin, with himself as King of Dublin. After successfully reaching agreement with Muircheartach Ua Briain it appears he was ambushed by enemies of Muircheartach Ua Briain and was killed in Ulster in 1103. The Suðreyjar once more erupted into warfare. This time between the two eldest sons of Godfred. His eldest Lögmaðr Guðrøðarson certainly seems to have taken on the mantle as King of the Isles but it is not clear whether this was with agreement of Magnus Olafsson or not. His rule is not clear either but it seems that he went, or was sent, on Crusade and travelled to Jerusalem where he died. Regardless of the reason the Síol nGofraidh was restored to the Kingdom of the Isles in the form of Óláfr Guðrøðarson (represented in this Profile) (the youngest son of Godfred).

Richard III the 28th great grandfather of Lance.

http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/NORMANDY.htm#_ftnref192

Richard is the son of Richard II, Duc de Normandie (d. 23 Aug 1026) and Judith [de Rennes] de Bretagne (d.28 Jun 1017).[9] He succeeded as Richard III but was the Duke of Normandy for only a year. According to a deed he married a woman named Adela. The document does not name her parents, and there are no children to offer any further evidence for her identity. However, Richard did have two illegimate children: Nicholas, a disinherited abbot; and Alix (En: Alice), who married Victome du Bessin.[10] Titles

Osborne Family Tree & Osborne Genealogy

Osborne of Newtown Anner Ralph Bernald-Osborne was an Esquire of Newtown Anner, county Tipperary, Ireland and of The Kincor of counter Waterford who was also a Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant, Member of Parliament, and Captain in the Army. In 1844, he married Katherine Isabella, daughter and heiress of Sir Thomas Osborne, 8th Baronet, and had two issue with her: Edith (married Henry Arthur Blake) and Grace (married William Amelius Aubrey, 10th Duke of St. Albans). He was the son of Ralph Bernal and assumed the surname Osborne by royal license in 1844. The Osbornes of Newtown Anner settled in Ireland in 1558 and became Baronets in the person of Sir Richard Osborne of Ballyntaylor in 1629. Sir Thomas Osborne, the 8th Baronet, the son of the Right and Honorable Sir William, married Catherine, daughter of Major Smith, and had issue named William (his heir) and Catharine Isavella. He was succeeded by his son William, the 9th baronet, who died and the estates were passed to the wife of the aforementioned Ralph. The Osborne Coat of Arms (mistakenly called the Osborne Family Crest) are blazoned in the European art of heraldry as follows: Quarterly, 1st and 4th, gules, on a fess or, cotised argent two fountains over all a bend of the third charged for difference with a cross crosslet azure, for Osborne: 2nd and 3rd, vair, three chevronels or, on a canton gules a tower argent, for Bernal. Crests: 1st, Osborne, A sea-lion sejant proper supporting with the dexter paw a trident sable headed or, and charged for difference on the shoulder with a cross crosslet azure; 2nd, Bernald, A demi-lion per fess gules and vair langued azure holding a torch or, fired proper.

Baronet Osborn Sir Algernon Kerr Butler Osborn, 7th Baronet, of Chicksands Priory was a Justice of the Peace and High Sheriff in 1909 who was a Captain in the 3rd Bn. Bedford Regiment who was born in 1870. He succeeded his grandfather in 1892. In 1903, he married Beatrice Elliot Kennard, daughter of William Bunce Greenfield, and had three issue with her: Peter Stanley (Captain Royal Fus. And Lieutenant in the 4th Hussars, served in WWII), Danvers Lionel Rouse (married Constance Violette Rooke), and Dorothy (married Gordon Chapman). The Osborn genealogy goes back to Peter Osborn, son of Richard, of Tyld Hall who had a grant of the office of Treasurer’s Remembrancer to himself and his heirs, in the reign of Edward VI, and in 1576, he purchased Chicksand Abbey. He married Anne, daughter of Dr. John Blyth, and had eleven sons and eleven daughters with her. His eldest son was Sir John Osborne. John married Dorothy, daughter of Richard Barlee of Elsenham Hall, and died in 1628, leaving issue. His eldest son was Sir Peter Osborn, Knight of Chicksands, who married Dorothy, daughter of Sir John Danvers of Daunstey, and had issue with her. His eldest son was Sir John Osborn, 1st Baronet, of Chicksands, who was created a Baronet in 1661. In 1647, he married Eleanor, daughter of Charles Danvers of Dauntsey, and had two daughters and a son named John (2nd Baronet). The Osborn Coat of Arms (erroneously called the Osborn Family Crest) is blazoned in heraldry as follows: Argent, a bend between two lions rampant sable. Crest: A lion’s head erased argent, ducally crowned or. Motto: Quantum in rebus inane

Lance,

The neither source you give for Matthew Osborn-5496 verifies/names Matthew as a son of Sir John Osborne b 1615. The only child name in "The Peerage" is John b 1659. Believe that he should be removed as Matthew's father.
