My primary geographic areas of interest are New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Illinois. I welcome collaborators and if you would like help with Stites ancestors, I am happy to offer my assistance.

I am also a student of Chinese history and read Chinese. The Chinese side of my wife's family is from the Yangtze (Changjiang) River Delta Region (Suzhou and Shanghai).

Hi Regie,

I'm sorry to be a pest but I discovered the following documentation that says there is a reference to John Stites, surgeon in the will of Richard Stites.

Source: James, Edmund J. “New Jersey Families in Illinois: The Casad and Stites Families.” Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society (1908-1984), vol. 7, no. 2, 1914, pp. 39–59. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/40194028. Accessed 13 Nov. 2020.

Hi, Robert.

I'm familiar with the Edmund James piece, but the source he cites is a record in a family bible (not a will) and was probably filled in with the information about "John Stites, surgeon" long after 1717. James was highly respected and rightfully so. I also grew up in Illinois and when I went to the University of Illinois, I was named a James Scholar Designate (James was a former President of the U. of I.). But James wrote at the turn of the century and by that time, the legend of Dr. John Stites (1595-1717) was well-established in family lore. James searched but could find no evidence of Stites origins in England - which is, I believe, because the name in England was Stiches (Sticks). If a Dr. John Stites died on Long Island in 1717, why is there absolutely no record of his presence there in contemporary documents? There is a lot on Richard and his family. It just defies logic to think Dr. John was there and somehow never was mentioned in any document, town annals, property claim, will,... nothing. Richard's wife Mary Underhill Stites was related to the Hall family in Connecticut and there were several doctors in that family. Also, one of Richard's great grandsons was a Dr. John Stites who spent time in New York and this later Dr. John was the owner of the bible James cites. There are many possible explanations for the story about Richard's father being a surgeon named John, but no documentation.

Hello Regie,

I have seen your work with the Stites family tree and I am most impressed. I believe that I am a direct-line descendant of Richard Stites (stites-250) but I've become stumped at determining ancestors for Richard Stites. I have seen many suggestions but have failed to identify anything that is reasonable, much less verifiable.

I do not have any formal training in genealogy and I've made a lot of mistakes that have taken a lot of time and effort to correct. That said, I believe my version of the Stites tree is reasonable. Please take a look around and let me know what you think. https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Stites-15&public=1

Hi, Robert.

Very nice to hear from you and I agree you (like me) are definitely a direct descendant of Richard Stites (Stites-250). I'll send you a private email with my notes on what I think is known (and unknown) about Richard's ancestors.

I had a quick look at your Stites family line and I found the place where our lines cross -- Benjamin Stites (Stites-515). Unfortunately, I have not been able to discover the surname of Rachel, Benjamin's wife. I visited her grave in Scotch Plains and searched a bit in local records, but no luck yet. I may have to go back to NJ, a bit difficult now since I live in California.

Hi, Dawn.

Thanks for offer to share information. I have not done as much work on the Cape May Stites lines as I have on my own, from Essex/Union County, New Jersey. I think you can be pretty confident that your George is from Cape May, almost certainly a descendant of either Henry or Benjamin Stites of Cape May (sons of Richard Stites of Westbury, Long Island). I'll have another look and see what I can find.

Hello, Regie. My paternal grandmother was a Stites from Philadelphia. I've followed the line back to George, probably born in Cape May, NJ about 1794. He was a cabinetmaker in Philly, working in the boat-building business. Word-of-mouth has our Stiteses coming from Cape May, though there's a

possibility the birth certificate I have does not belong to our George. I've managed to find some distant cousins. We're all, as far as I know, unable to get past this brick wall (George). I have some daguerrotypes and ambrotypes of this branch, and I believe one is of George. I have a tree and DNA on Ancestry.com, and I'm happy to share whatever I have.

Hi Regie, I have not found https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Eldredge-26 on Long Island, but agree it’s a good possibility he came from that community.

I saw a post you had about Samuel and William Stites.

I believe William married a Mary Jane Henderson and had a daughter by the name of Missouri Ann. William also had a sister by the name of Missouri Ann

William was taken by bushwhackers around Mt. Vernon Arkansas and never heard from again.

William is my GGGG Grandfather on my Moms side.

I believe all this correct.

Hi Regie,

Thank you for self-certifying for the Pre-1700 badge! Participation in a Pre-1700 Project is strongly encouraged for those wishing to edit Pre-1700 profiles. Collaboration is essential because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants.

It looks like [1] would be a good fit with the tag you entered. Adding the tag 1776 will help you get updates about activity for that project.

Do you have any questions? Let me know. I'm happy to help! :-)

Hi Regie,

Thanks for volunteering! You are now a full member of the WikiTree community, and can start adding your family. Let me know if you have any questions.

Since WikiTree is different from other genealogy sites, we have a guided tour for new members at New Member How-To. Feel free to work through the How-Tos at your own pace.

Once you add profiles to WikiTree they become searchable and in my experience persons interested in these profiles will contact you and may provide further information to expand your family tree.

Great to have you on board, enjoy, and good luck growing your branches.

Ludwig :)
