Biography

Mary _____ was born in England. Her surname and parents are unknown.[1]

She and her husband John Wilcox were original settlers in Hartford, Connecticut by 1639.[1]

When John died in 1651, he provided for his wife Mary.[1]

Widow Wilcox, age 75 years, was treated by John Winthrop in 1659 and again in 1663 at age 80 years.[2]

Mary Wilcock made her will dated 4 Oct 1666, making bequests to her "Cosin" (grandaughter) Sara Long, daughter Ann "Haul," and son-in-law John Bidwell (also named executor).[1] Overseers were Deacon [Richard] Butler and James Ensing, who also witnessed the will. An inventory of the estate of Widdow Wilcock of Hartford was taken 1 Jan 1668 (probably 1668/9 since it was presented in court 4 March 1668/9) and valued at £40. 0. 4, including money owed her by John Haul and John Deming. Her estate had debts of £5.13.0.[3]

Mary was still living 27 October 1667 when the court ordered her son John to pay her £6 per year, since her weakness did not allow her to occupy the "Old House." She probably lived with daughter Bidwell.[1]

Research Notes

Disambiguation: There is another Mary who was the widow of Joseph Farnsworth (maiden name not known) who became the 3rd wife of John Wilcox, Jr. She died in 1671. [4]

Unsourced date of death: FindAGrave memorial gives her birth as 1584 and has an exact date of death 4 March 1668. However, in the text it states "Died in Hartford before 1 Jan 1669." It is a virtual memorial, not based on a burial record.[5]

I wonder if we should be using the estimated birth date based on the Winthrop medical records which both mentions would give her a birth date of about 1584, and then I would also back up her husband's birth date to about 1580 (as opposed to 1595). Jacobus doesn't attempt to estimate their birth dates, and her eldest child is still well within childbearing years. Thoughts, objections?

Shouldn't her married surname be Wilcox to match her husband, with "Willcock" or "Willcocks" as an alternate name?

Her will uses Willcock, and that's her last known document. Granted, she signed with an x, so that's also debatable.

Farnsworth-1038 and Unknown-435374 appear to represent the same person because: No last name known for John WIlcox's wife. Merging to Unknown

After researching Mary Farnsworth, I figured out she was supposed to be the wife of John WIlcox. They had children in England before migrating to New England. John Wilcox's wife's death date was 1668, in Hartford. Jacobud says her last name was unknown. Please merge to Unknown-435374, which is a PPP profile
