The idea that the family came originally from Bourdonnay in France with William the Conqueror was initially advanced by Weld 1899, and picked up by numerous other authors, including in particular Cook, 1905, "Robergia a story of Old England", which is essentially a work of historical fiction.

Neither Weld, nor any later authors (as far as I am aware) were able to actually trace the genealogy back beyond Henry of Borden Parish bc. 1375. No Borden appears among the Known companions of William The Conqueror, and the Borden surname does not appear in the Domesday book, or the Domesday Monoachorum (specific to Kent) of the same period.
