Hi Esther,

Thanks for all your work on WikiTree. I noticed that you have begun adding profiles for the pre-1700 ancestors you have found in your search. Congratulations in getting back that far!

Since you are now back in the time period where many people can be descended from those ancestors, we need more details in your source area. As collaborative genealogists, we need to tell each other our sources so that we can work together to asses the relative reliability of the source and the evidence it contains.

Ancestry and MyHeritage both have some great records but we need to know which record and database you found the information in; right now the source is the same as if you had said at the library. This section on creating citations with Links to Ancestry will give you some idea what is needed.

The Sources - Examples section more fully explains what information needs to be included in source citations for pre-1700 profiles.

We're looking for reliable sources to add to the various lists. Would the sources you found at Ancestry and MyHeritage be good additions?

Thanks,

Debi

Hey Esther,

Thank you for joining us! I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going. How do you like WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How To Pages been helpful or have they left you with questions?

Sources are crucial in good genealogy and required by WikiTree, see the pre-1700 quiz and the Honor Code. They are required for any profile, especially for pre-1700 ones. Also see the comment by Claire. Please start adding real sources to the profiles. You can contact Claire for more information; the help pages also have information on how to write complete references.

Please let me know if you have any questions about WikiTree. To contact me, log in to WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment to be sure that I will be notified. You can also click my name to send a private message, or post a comment on my profile page. It's really is great to have you on board.

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Hello Esther,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The Germany Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).
