Biography

Mary (Brownson) Gaylord immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Mary Brownson was baptized December 12, 1627 at Earl's Colne, Essex, England.[1]the daughter of John Bronson[2]and his probable wife Frances (Hills) Brownson.[3]

Migration

In 1635 Mary migrated to New England aboard the Defense with her parents, a sister named Dorcas, and an uncle and aunt Richard and Mary Brownson. Her two younger brothers had died and were buried at Earl's Cologne. Together, in Rev. Mr. Thomas Hooker's company, the Brownson family moved to Hartford, Connecticut Colony in May/June 1636; being some of the original settlers there. Sometime between 1641 and 1649 the Brownson family moved again, this time to Farmington, Connecticut Colony. where Mary's father served on the Grand Jury on May 15, 1650.[3]

Four Marriages

Mary married John Wyatt by about 1647. John was an early settler of Windsor, Conn who moved to Farmington in the 1640's since he sold his land at Windsor in 1649.[3]Since John Wyatt had not lived in Hartford, it can be assumed that they married at Farmington.

As Mary Wyatt, the wife of John Wyatt, Mary joined the Church of Farmington, Connecticut on October 9, 1653.[4]Her father had been considered one of the "seven pillars" of the church there from it's formation on October 13, 1652.[3]

Her husband, John Wyatt died at Haddam, Connecticut Colony before September 7, 1668. The administration of his will was granted to Mary; also John and Richard Bronson to assist her.[5] John was her father and Richard her Uncle.[3]

Mary married (2nd) to John Graves (as his second wife) on July 20, 1671. He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Graves of Hadley, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was born in England about 1625 and on September 19, 1677 was killed by Indians at Hatfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony[5]during King Phillips War.[3]

Thirdly Mary married William Allis (as his second wife) at Hatfield on June 25, 1678. He was born in England and settled in Boston and Braintree, Massachusetts Bay Colony, by 1637. He moved to Hadley then Hatfield where his first wife died on August 10, 1677. William Allis died at Hartford on September 6, 1678. His will, dated September 2, 1678 and proved at Hartford on September 24, 1678, left his assets to his wife Mary and to the children of his first marriage.[3]

Lastly Mary married Samuel Gaylord on March 16, 1681 (as his second wife). Samuel Gaylord was baptized at Crewkerne, co Somerset, England on December 19, 1619;[5] the son of William Gaylord and migrated to New England with his father in 1630, probably on the Mary and John. William lived many years at Windsor, then moved to Hatfield after the death of his first wife, Elizabeth (Hull) on May 2, 1680. He died at Hatfield in late September 1689. A will was dated September 22, 1689 in which Mary and Mr. Samuel Partridge were executors; an inventory was taken October 25, 1689 totalled at L239-08-01; and the will was proved on September 4, 1690.[3]

Unknown Death

Mary (Brownson) Gaylord survived after the death of all four of her husbands. Parke and Jacobus in "The Ancestry of Lorenzo Ackley & his wife Emma Arabella Bosworth" says she was living in 1694.[5]Jacobus does not state why he knows this, but somewhere there is probably a document signed or acknowledged by her in 1694.

Coddington in "Brownson, Bronson, or Brunson Family of Earl's Colne, Essex, England, - Connecticut, and South Carolina, " written in 1962, says on p. 202 that Mary's death is unknown but it was after September 4, 1690.[3]

According to Find a Grave she was buried Center Cemetery Whately, Franklin County, Massachusetts, USA[6] This is however a very modern monument that says only Mary Wyatt (no dates) and may not even be her, and is probably not where she was buried.

I'm going to work on this biography for Dec 2022 BioBuilders challenge. As I'm here, I'll also work on the maintenance category: needs relationship check. I hope there are no objections, if there are just let me know.

GeneJ: thank you for your work here, especially the children.

I'll comment here, or post a G2G if I have any questions.

Research completed, bio completed, children all have sources and I believe they are correct.

I'm done here, if you have any questions, please contact me.

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

Have added PGM maintenance category, "needs relationship check" and needs section, as follows, to the profile.

While there is room for other profile improvement, this profile has six linked children, but lacks a "family section" with one or more child lists and accompanying reliable sources. In a quick review of the linked children's profiles, only one contains what seems a reliable source for their parentage. (Profile of Joanna (Wyatt) Field (1663-1722) includes a reference to a Register article citing Church records of Farmington ...). Of the other five children's profiles (all Pre-1700), Israel Wyatt (1668-1729) seems based on Ancestral File; Elizabeth (Wyatt) Gunn (1666-1737) sports a marriage source only; the first source on Hepzibah Elizabeth (Wyatt) Pratt (1652-1711) is likewise a marriage source; and all sources for John Wyatt (abt.1650-1718) are "to come."

Edited to add, profile of Nathaniel Graves (1671-abt.1757) has no inline citations.
