Alfred Herbert Punchard was born in 1866 in Sussex, England to Alfred Punchard and Eliza (Parsons) Punchard. His birth was registered in Steyning, Sussex in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Parsons.^[1]

In 1871 Alfred Punchard (age 4, Scholar) lived in Brighton, Sussex with his father Alfred (26, Flyman), mother Eliza (29), and three brothers: George (5, Scholar), William (2), and Frederick (0).^[2]

Alfred's mother Eliza Punchard passed away in 1874, and his father married Sarah Ann Newton in 1876.
