Biography

Cornelis is listed as a member of the Aardswoud church around 1675. He is not listed there in 1690, which means he was living elsewhere, most likely Nieuwe Niedorp, by then.

Cornelis married 1 unknown. Children: Cornelis (Dec 14 1687, baptized in Winkel, his father living in Nieuwe Niedorp). Guurtje (1695, married Nanne Pieters Bullooper / Fokels from Westwoud on Oct 12 1721).

Guurtje (1695) married Nanne Pieters Bulloper of Westwoud on Oct 12 1721. Nanne was a bullooper (he would have had bulls to impregnate cows). Guurtje transferred her church membership from Aartswoud to Wervershoof on Sept 1 1715. Their child Maartje (baptized July 14 1726) married Simon Dirks van de Deure and inherited some money from aunt Aafie in 1778. Their daughters were Elisabeth and Grietje van de Deure. In her testament of Dec 3 1754, Maartje was to receive everything her parents owned to pass on to her daughters. If they died before that was possible, her siblings Cornelis and Aaf would receive it all. They also had a son Pieter.

Cornelis van der Sluijs married 2 Geertje Jans, a widow born in Enkhuizen and living in Oude Niedorp on June 22 1698 in Nieuwe Niedorp. They are listed on the Nieuwe Niedorp Church membership list together in 1704, with the note "moved to Wervershove". Children: Cornelis (July 12 1699), Jan (Sept 24 1702, both in Oude Niedorp), Aaf (1705; listed in some wills; made profession of faith with her brother Cornelis on April 29 1725 in Wervershoof). Geertje had one son through her first marriage with Simon Pietersz Koning.

On Dec 17 1722 Cornelis Cornelisz Sluijs is listed with his brother Adriaan Cornelisz Sluijs and his children Guurtje, Kornelis, Aaf and Jan in a codicil in Oosterblokker under notary Jacob Schagen. They all lived in Zwaagdijk close to Medemblik. This is Adriaan's will. Since he had no children, after his death his belongings would go to his brother Cornelis and his children. This would include his 400 guilders, his silver and gold, his linen, clothes, wool, and everything else.

For a long time Cornelis’ birth has been listed as around 1676. However, with the discovery of his 1675 membership record and a son (who obviously didn’t live very long) in the Winkel records, we will need to push that birth back. We also needed to push back Geertje’s birth date of 1680; being a widow at age 18 wasn’t very likely at this time in history.

Cornelis' son Cornelis' baptism record says he was a houtkoper (wood merchant) from Nieuwe Niedorp. He became a farmer when he moved to the farm of his brother Reijer in Zwaagdijk on November 2, 1704. He was still living there in 1710 and 1721 (mentioned in notes dealing with his brother Jacob’s funeral). Cornelis Corn. Sluis and Geertje Jans are listed in the January 1704 membership list from Nieuwe Niedorp with “moved to Wervershove” behind it.

On January 13 1712, Tijmon Klaasz Midwoud of Midwoud transported cows and other goods related to them to Kornelis Kornelisz Sluis in Zwaagdijk-Oost (first under Medemblik, now under Wervershoof), but left several other goods at his own house. It seems they had a major disagreement, possibly about payment, and took each other to court. There is a series of 6 notary documents in the files of Abbekerk relating to this suit between January 20 and June 20 1713. The first involved 5 people. After that it seems there were several other people who also were involved in suits with Tijmon who stepped in. The final documents list 29 people, saying it dealt with the management of giving and receiving sold goods. Kornelis was the step-father of Tijmon's cousin and husband of Tijmon's deceased aunt (Kornelis' wife - it must have been his first wife since Grietje was still alive at this time). Kornelis is called a land owner in these documents. In 1714 and 1715 they both also appear in two wills and dispersal of the deceased person's goods.

In the 1930’s Cornelis Gerritsz Sluys wrote a book called “Vrije Westfriezen”, a novel about the ancestors of the Sluys family. This first novel covers the lives of three Cornelis Sluys’: father, son and grandson. It covers the time from about 1700 to about 1800. I have included summaries of stories from the book when they pertain directly to our family’s history. We believe Cornelis wrote everything in this book and its sequel, “Vrije Westfriezen II”, accurately according to the facts he was able to find in church records and other historical sources. Taking those facts, he studied the history and culture of the times and turned them into stories complete with dialogue. Not everything, it turns out, was accurate. Today we have access to church records on the internet and what took him weeks and months to research takes us minutes and hours today. When something Cornelis wrote disagrees with the statistics available on the internet to us today, I have taken note of it only if it makes a difference to our family history. The books have been translated into English: contact Bertram for a copy of them if you desire them and he will ask permission from the translator.

Notes summarized by Bertram Sluys from the novel “Vrije Westfriezen I” by Cornelis Gerritsz Sluys: Chapter 1. 1704: Cornelis Cornelisz Sluys moves his family from Nieuwe Niedorp to Zwaagdijk to live close to his brother Reyer. At this time, Cornelis’ son Cornelis is 5. A friend, Teunis Cornelisz from Venhuizen, helps them settle into their new house. When they arrive in Zwaagdijk, Reyer Cornelisz, Teunis Cornelisz and Peet Aaf (Teunis’ aunt and person in charge of taking care of Teunis Cornelisz’s household) are there to greet them and help them move in. Afterwards they visit Teunis in Venhuizen. There little Cornelis meets Aafgen (Teunis’ oldest daughter) and Japik (one of his sons), and Crelis (as we call little Cornelis) explores the Zuiderdijk (south dike). His opa (grandfather) had lived by the Noorderdijk (north dike, also known as the Omringdijk) in Aardswoud and he had explored that too. Another thing that excites him was that there is a duck farm beside his new house!

There is a note that says Jacob Roosekrans, school master of Wervershoof, acted as notary for Cornelis Sluijs of Zwaagdijk for his acres of seed land in the Noorder-Nes are in order with the scout (schot) and fees paid for them on April 4 1712.
