Biography

Thomas was born about 1518, at Homington, Wiltshire, England.[1] Thomas was the child of Richard Saint Barbe and Margery Grey.

Thomas married Joan (Unknown), and they had at least five daughters and at least two sons:[2]

  • Alice
  • Mary
  • Elinor
  • Margery
  • Katherine
  • George
  • Thomas (named as brother-in-law and executor of the 1581 Will of Christopher Batt)[3]

Thomas died testate on 31 October 1563. His Will was dated August 8, 1562. [2]

Thomas' Will was proved in 1573 [this date is likely an error given the Court of Ward Liveries and i.p.m. were 6 Elizabeth or 1563/4] and mentions his wife Joan (executrix), sons Thomas and George, daughters Alice and Margery and son-in-law, John Mylls.[2][4] Joan was still living in 1563. [5][6][7]

Thomas' wife, Joan, may be the widow Joan Saintbarbe who was buried 11 May 1581 at St. Martin, Salisbury, Wiltshire.[8]

Is it possible that Joan, the wife of Thomas Santebarbe of Salisbury may have been Johan White, the daughter of Thomas White of Poole ( Thomas White (abt.1483-1556)) and his wife Cecily Webbe?
William Webbe MP for Salisbury in 1504 and 1510(William Webbe MP (bef.1466-1523)) wrote his will in 1523 naming daughter Cecily, wife of Thomas White of Poole and their children. Thomas, Edyth and Johane
Will of William Kellowe or William Webbe , Mercer or Merchant of Salisbury, Wiltshire 1523

to Cecile Whight my daughter the wife of Thomas of Pole merchant and to hir heires of hir body lawfully comyng Item I bequeth to Thomas Whight the sonne of the said Cecily and to Edith and Johane Whight hir daughters

Thomas White (abt.1483-1556) of Poole wrote his will in 1555.After leaving the bulk of his estate to his only son Thomas he made the eldest son of each of his three daughters (one from an earlier marriage) as default heirs to a part of the estate.

Will of Thomas White or Whitte, Merchant of Poole, Dorset 1557

Thomas Santebarbe son of Thomas Santebarbe was the default heir for the part of his estate that included: Manor and Ferme of Bowefylde lyinge and beinge w’thin the said p’ishe of Whitep’ishe in the said Countie of Wiltes’ And also my Manor and ferme of Cricklade lyinge and beinge in thesaid parishe of Andover with[in][th]e said countie of South to Thomas Seyntebarbe sonne and heyre of Thomas Seyntebarbe of the citie of newe Sarum in the said Countie of Wiltes Draper He also left bequests to my daughter Johnane Sentebarbe to be devyded amongst her children

The Sainte Barbes were a big family so there may have been more than one Thomas active in Salisbury at the time The will of Thomas Sainte Barbe (New Sarum) Jan.1590/1 (Thomas St Barbe (abt.1550-abt.1591) suggests that his father had property and was presumably active there. The son George St Barbe (1552-) is said to be 'of Whiteparish' Is it co-incidence that land in Whiteparish formed part of Thomas White's estate?

Thanks, Helen. This is very helpful. It is likely to take a bit of research to check this out. I would be delighted if anyone wants to investigate sooner, but otherwise, would you be upset if we left things till this profile is given a general overhaul for the Magna Carta Project? We can then look at it in the context of what we can find out generally about Thomas St Barbe, which may give more evidence. I am afraid I cannot say when the Project will reach this profile - we have a long queue of profiles needing attention.

No rush. I first started on the White family in 2015 and am far from finished. As I found they're part of a network of interconnected mercantile families involved in the West Country cloth trade. It's become a never ending project. I doubt Johan White herself has any discoverable Magna Carta antecedents.
