Research Notes

Needs Source Check (Magna Carta Project Maintenance Category) was added because the information in this profile appears to be from Lewis citing Richardson, which means the information needs to be verified against Richardson's works (see this comment in the G2G discussion Carrie started in May 2019 about the concerns she posted as a comment to this profile).

Genealogical information, citing Dr. Burton's MS Pedigree for the Thorpe Family of Thorpe Garth/Welwick, from Carrie's post:
  • Stephen Thorpe Esq who married Isabel Constable is the son of
  • Stephen Thorpe and Rebecca Eyre (not Joan Eyre)
  • Stephen Thorpe who married Rebecca is the son of Robert Thorpe (not Stephen).
Carrie adds that the "current profile [as of May 2019] does not link back to the St. Quintin family as it should be based on other pedigrees and research."
The answers and comments in the May 2019 G2G discussion include drawbacks to Visitations as source (e.g., a 1664 Visitation is not especially reliable for 1400s events). One of the comments shared Richardson's sources listed in Magna Carta Ancestry for the entry of Richard Thorpe who married Joan Eyre:[8]
  • Flowers Visitation, Hunter's Familiae Minorum Gentium 2, pp. 549-554, Harvey's North 3, p. 142, and NEHGR 111, pp. 195-200, and 114, pp. 217-227

Richardson

The Newton Chapter in Richardson's Royal Ancestry[2] has the following information:
  • Stephen Thorpe of Goshill, son of "Stephen de Thorpe, Knt., by Elizabeth, daughter of Marmaduke Constable" (Royal Ancestry [RA], IV:247 NEWTON 12). Sources for NEWTON 12 include several Visitations and (most recent) "NEHGR 114 (1960): 217-227."
  • Stephen of Goshill married Isabel Plumpton, daughter of William Plumpton, as her first husband "by contract dated 10 March 1424/5"; Stephen "died between 12 March 1440/41 and 1442" (RA, IV:247 NEWTON 12).
  • Stephen Thorpe of Danthorpe, Yorkshire, son of Stephen and Isabel, married Joan Eyre about 1434; they had one son and four daughters (RA, IV:247-8 NEWTON 13). Sources for NEWTON 13 include "NEHGR 111 (1957): 195-200; 114 (1960): 217-227."
  • Stephen, son of Stephen and Joan, married (1) Denise Eland, (2) Isabel Constable (RA, IV:248 NEWTON 14).
I did not see a Dr. Burton cited for any of those entries. ~ Noland-165, 15 Feb. 2021

Magna Carta Project

Stephen Thorpe appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Ellen Newton to Magna Carta Surety Baron Robert de Ros (vol. III, pages 258-260 NEWTON). This trail needs development and is set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of Lancelot Newton's profile.

This profile is in a Richardson-documented trail between Gateway Ancestor Ellen Newton and Magna Carta surety baron Robert de Ros (MCA III:258-260 NEWTON) that needs development by the Magna Carta Project. If there are no objections, I will soon be adding the project as co-manager of this profile and will add a project box and project section to the biography. This profile still needs to be developed against the project's checklist. Thanks!

Thank you to all who commented below. I do not have access to Richardson, as I cannot afford his books at this point in time. So, like many, I see him cited as a source and 99% of the time there are no issues and I am ok with the information on the profile. I took a look at the references suggested by C Handy and yes, it is correct, however, the profile for Thorpe - 199 is missing a generation. I started researching the Thorpe line from Margaret Thorpe who married John Newton of Burstwick. Her father is Stephen Thorpe Esq, her mother is Isabel Constable as his second wife, his first wife is Joan Eyre (no children born from his marriage with Joan), which is correct in Burke's Commoner’s, but it is documenting the Eyre pedigree, not the Thorpe pedigree. From Burke, the Eyre generation prior to Joan states a John Eyre who dies without an illegitimate heir, so I think Rebecca Eyre (as cited by Dr. Burton) is a base daughter of John Eyre (his father is Robert Eyre who acquired Padley by marriage to Joanna Padley daughter of Robert Padley Esq) to who married Stephen Thorpe (d. circa 1475) and is Stephen Thorpe Esq (Thorpe - 199), mother. With all of this confusion, I think that the profiles linked to the parents of Thorpe -199 may need to be reviewed. As it may be his mother is Rebecca Eyre illegitimate daughter of John Eyre of Padley, County Durham. In addition, there is also confusion about who the father is of Thorpe-200, Richardson states his father is Stephen Thorpe, but in both Dr. Burton's and the other visitations, this Stephen Thorpe was a Vicar in Welwick, and no marriage or children are documented. It is his older brother Robert who is Stephen's father (Thorpe-200). This also needs to be checked. So, I am still confused as to what to do regarding the Thorpe Pedigree. Without access to Richardson's materials, I cannot agree or disagree with what is posted on either Thorpe - 199 or Thorpe - 200. I am pre-1700 certified however not pre-1500. Do I need to reach out to the profile manager or the pre-1500 managers to raise these issues?

Hi Carrie! Sorry for the delay in responding to your comment on this profile, but I believe the G2G discussion resolved the issue at the time - at least, it seems to me that the G2G discussion reached the conclusion that the pedigree given by Richardson is more reliable than the different one based on Visitations given by Dr. Burton. To help clarify that, I've added a Research Notes section so that the information is available here when the Magna Carta Project develops the profile as part of a trail.

I was drawn to the profile because I'm working on the project's "unmerged matches" and this profile was set as an unmerged match of Thorpe-200. I have rejected that match, since they are father/son.

Cheers, Liz
