Things are warming up at work, and I anticipate more time required on work stuff. Also, I'm going to be hamstrung on doing WikiTree stuff as my work laptop cannot load the Chrome App which I'm already dependent on. I do plan on dedicating some time to it and working with my Tortoise team mates.

Hello Anthony,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi!

Not sure whether this is an indication that genealogists are often bored, or if you are out and about this evening and checking the new folks out. I'm working my way through some of the basics here and I'll be adding some family members to the tree shortly. This group and the next will all be folks I can attest to from my own knowledge, or as the legal phrasing goes "Based on knowledge and belief ..." If you decide to respond - I often go by Tigger.

Tigger, "based on knowledge and belief" is perfectly acceptable for those whom you knew (or almost knew).

BTW: As a Greeter, I am on duty for about 11 hours a week, so I am watching the feeds for new members to point them in the right direction. There is a crew of us. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Greeters

It has been an interesting month. I'm getting comfortable with the GEDCOMPARE process and I've gotten most of my Great Grandparent level family added. I'm also getting more usable 'hits' to existing profiles. I've just about worked up my courage to start trying to provide sources for some of the early ancestors in the tree that are unsourced.

On my next visit home I hope to collect my dads paper files from when he was the family genealogist. I also need to check with the local libraray and see if they can track down the VanCampen Big Book - that's not what cousin Jerry called it but its a pretty good description. Have a great weekend - I'm going to be playing hide and seek with a storm that will either stay Tropical Depression 16 og spin up enough to take the name Ophelia.

Thanks for the reminder, I just signed it - all of the points seem to be straightforward, and no conflicts.

I've been working on family genealogy just about long enough not to have to look it up in the dictionary when I spell it. As is often the case, I'm standing on the shoulders of giants to have what I do now about the family. The VanCampen family we can trace back to the Dutch colonial period late 1650s. My mom's side back to 1860's civil war era is solid and then we get shaky. I'm hoping to get some help with a maternal ancestor that seems to have just popped up out of the ground. Census records show him as born in Pennsylvania, and he moved west to Ohio and then Indiana. In 1864 he and his sons joined an Indiana Infantry Regiment, got shipped to Tennessee and he died in Tennessee in the Chattanooga area. No record of who his father was, and very little about his mother.

Thanks,

I've responded in reverse order, even with all of my time working in IT. New sites and new user interfaces sometimes leave me wondering where the ____ button is. (_____ is a random fill in the blank.) I think WikiTree may hold the record for the fastest personalized greeting of any place I have ever been.

Great to hear, Anthony! Greeters monitor the feeds and respond ASAP when a new member pops up. You are corresponding with a live person, not just a personalized greeting.

These tips might help:

  • At the top of this page, you see SURNAME entered.  Click the magnifying glass, and you get a list of all SURNAME profiles on WikITree, and you can sort alphabetically or by birth or death dates to see if family members are already on WikiTree.  You can repeat this for each surname you are researching or add a first name to see all the profiles on WikITree.
  • You could download a gedcom from a site or program you have entered your family and upload it to WikiTree for the GEDCOMpare process.  This page lists gedcom links for more information: Gedcom Topics.

I hope this helps, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Take care  ~ Sheryl

All very helpful things.

I'm in the process of importing my Ancestry.com GEDCOM. I'm also hoping for tips and hints on cleaning up the mess. One of my Ancestors, Jan Van Campen b 1661, has been listed by some on Ancestry as a Dutch Admiral others have him as a Captain but don't differentiate between Sea Captain and Militia Captain. I've found a pretty good source that convinces me he was a Militia Captain in the Kingston NY area. The good thing about that time period and area is that a lot of the the colonial records for the New Netherlands and New York colonies were preserved into the mid-1800's and nearly all of the original records were transcribed into a multi-volume set. Usually called Colonial History of New York. Another great help is some of the wealthier New York area Dutch families, formed the Holland Society, with purpose of documenting the history and settlers of the colony. I'm similarly lucky with a branch of Clan Campbell, that is reasonably well documented. All of that just makes it more frustrating when a branch dead ends with a guy like Samuel Bohart, born in Pennsylvania to Charlotte Bohart, who may have been from Virginia originally and no information about a husband. I need to start winding down, and sometimes this stuff winds me up. Thankyou again for a great introduction to this site, and I hope you have a great night. Tigger

Hi, "Tigger"

Do review the GEDCOMpare process on the Gedcom Topics link I sent you. Yes, there is good help for cleaning up Gedcom mess and incorrect facts. Be sure to ensure that Jan Van Campen is not already on WikiTree. The further back in time you go, the more likely your ancestors are shared with and already entered by WikiTree members.

More later, and enjoy your night also.

Take care ~ Sheryl
