Biography

According to Jacobus, we do not know the parents or even the surname of Priscilla, the wife of Thomas Powell of New Haven. Thomas and Priscilla Powell had 6 daughters and no sons: Hannah, Priscilla, Mary, Martha, Martha, and Hester.[1]

The origins of the wife of Thomas Powell are unknown. Priscilla died after 29 September 1681, the date her husband Thomas Powell executed his will.[2]

Because nothing is known of Priscilla's parentage, the birth place previously listed for her, Mildenhall, Suffolk, England, has been removed. It is estimated that her husband was born about 1616, so that same estimated date is given for her.

It has been suggested that Priscilla Powell's maiden name was Whitson, and that her father was Stephen Lynn Whitson, but no sources have been found for that information so he has been removed as her father.

She is listed as Priscilla [?Whitson] in Torrey's New England marriages.[3]

Children listed in "List of Baptisms In the Church in New Haven, Conn., during the Ministry of Rev. John Davenport, from Nov 1639 to Nov 1666 taken from the Church Records & arranged alphabetically"[4]

[Where the name of the child is in italics it denotes that the name of the parent is not mentioned in the Church Record, but is supplied by the compiler from the town Registry of Births, Probate Records, or other sources of information. In all other cases the parent's name is taken from the Church Record. Where the name of the mother is given from the Record, that of the husband is supplied, when known. The date of birth, when it occurs in the Church Record, is put following the name. The dates in brackets are births from the Town Records. The name of the father is always entered in the Town Record of births. The year of the dates commences 25 Mar. H.W.]

Please see the comments I just added to Powell-266. The son William Powell-2827 does not belong to him. The comments by Living Walker, below, seem to indicate that the Tomas Powell from Virginia was married to Mary Place, not Priscilla Whitson. If Whitson-933 is detached from the son William Powell-2827 (and her husband is changed to Powell-266) I would agree to merge Whitson-933 and Unknown-192741.

Whitson-300 and Whitson-208 appear to represent the same person because: These two are duplicate profiles. Please merge.

I'm sorry you think this is smug commentary. I was trying to give you the opportunity to find the correct wife for Thomas Powell-8183. I have now detached her as the spouse of Thomas Powell-8183, and will now agree to merge her with Unknown-192741, the wife of Thomas Powell-266.

Kay, please double check your sources. Maybe accurate historical sources ? Or Add them if they're applicable. One person saying something isn't knowable vs ten other historians who say otherwise doesn't make it accurate and I'd really love to see your historical documents or direct sources of research. The Thomas Powell(s) of Virginia was a completely different guy(s), I absolutely positively assure you. In fact, there were many, many Thomas Powells in Virginia in the span of 1600s-1800s, all from the same common ancestors. Not one of them was the Thomas Powell in Connecticut, however.

Just remember: Powell-2190 had ONE wife, and that was Mary Place. They lived in Virginia. This man, Powell-2190, is NOT the same man that married Priscilla Whitson. (And the last name Whitson is VERY documented, thank you very much.)

You may be correct about the birth location, but Whitson-429 and Unknown-192741 are the same freaking person. Fix and merge them instead of putting smug commentary, so the problem is gone? Thanks!

Whitson-429 and Unknown-192741 do not represent the same person because: This Priscilla Whitson is married to a Thomas Powell who died in Virginia. She could not be the wife of Thomas Powell-266 who lived in New Haven.

Priscilla could not have been born in New Haven in 1620. The colony was founded in 1637. Her date of death is similar to information about the death of the wife of Thomas Powell-266, but the surname of his wife is unknown, not Whitson.

Found a tree that has her surname as Whitson. On geneanet.org in Kelly Clarkson's family tree.
