Thomas K. Brigham There is no compelling evidence that the elder William, Daniel, John, Ephraim, and James Witcher were brothers How then, would they connect to this William? Or do they?], but they appear in the same place at the same time suggesting that they were probably related, closely or not. It is ASSUMED that they were brothers and this Witcher allows us to group them together for the sake of convenience. [It's unclear, however, why there would be a photo posted of him, since he's also posted as having died before photography was invented.]
On several occasions, now, someone has come along without meaningful evidence and tried to give this individual a name and vital statistics. [That appears to be the case now.] On more than one occasion it was someone who had found some specious claim on Ancestry that confused Maj William and this individual, his nominal father.
The genealogy represented here possesses obvious problems. This could represent a starting point, however, for researchers to improve upon.
It is believed that all of the Witchers in the United States are descended from William Witcher of Pittsylvania Co., VA. The tradition is that the old, original William Witcher migrated to this country when in his early teens, eluding his folks and stowing away on a sailing vessel bound from England to the American Colonies. On arrival here, he was "apprenticed" to a planter until he reached maturity, in payment of his passage over. He later settled in Pittsylvania Co., VA, married and had six sons and two daughters, by name as follows: William, Jr., John, Daniel, James, Ephraim and Caleb. The daughters Elizabeth, married to Abraham Razor; Rachel married to Wm. Morrison. (W. C. Witcher letter of 3/17/1956)
His sons were Caleb, Ephraim, John Daniel, and William. His daughters, Ann, who married a Razor and other daughter married Morrison. I know nothing of them and descendants. William and John died in this County. Ephraim and Caleb moved to Surry and Nash Counties, NC. Daniel moved to Kanawha Co., WV, on Witcher Creek. He was the Ancestor of Gen. J. L. Witcher of Salt Lake City, who was in the Yankee Army. (V. A. Witcher dated 9/7/1906)
CAPTAIN WILLIAM WITCHER, , who was born in 1739. He was living in Pittsylvania County when it was organized in 1767, and was elected a vestryman of Camden Parish on June 21, 1767. After the meeting of the First Continental Congress he was elected to the Pittsylvania County Committee of Safety on January 26, 1775, and captained a company of Pittsylvania County troops. In September 1776 Captain Witcher commanded a 200 man garrison at Fort Patrick Henry (at the current site of the Eastman Kodak plant in Kingsport, Sullivan County, Tennessee) during the Cherokee campaign. On January 23, 1777 he was appointed to a judgeship by Governor Patrick Henry. His company fought at the battle of Stono Ferry, South Carolina on June 20, 1779, and at the battle of Guilford Court House, North Carolina on March 15, 1781.

I can find no evidence that MAJ William Witcher (1724 -1808) ever had a middle name, certainly not "Reuben."
There is no document amongst his commissions and transactions of MAJ William Witcher using a middle name.
On the discharge MAJ Witcher signed for his son James Witcher on 23 Jul 1779, he signed his signature, "Wm. Witcher, Capt." Nor is a middle name, or initial, subsequently used on his grave marker.
The first use of the name "Reuben," which I can find in the Witcher Line is his grandson "Reuben Witcher (1780 - 1850)" by his son, John. If you have evidence or documentation to the contrary please share it, or remove mention of "Reuben" as MAJ William Witcher's middle name.
Very respectfully, George P. Farris, II CPT, IN, USA (R) 5GGS of William Witcher
