Biography

Birth

Abraham du Bois, son of Louis du Bois and Catherine Blanchon, was born 29 December 1657. He was baptized 5 days later, on 3 January 1658, at the French Reformed Church in Mannheim, in what is now Germany. His godmother was Marie Blanchon. [1] The family were Huguenots.

Arrival

When Abraham was just a few years old, the duBois family emigrated from Mannheim to America. They were in Wiltwyck, New Netherland (now Kingston, New York) when a son, Jacob, was baptized there on 9 October 1661. [2] [3]

Marriage and Children

Abraham DuBois married Margaret Deyo. The date of marriage is sometimes given as 6 March 1681, but their marriage doesn't appear in the church register in either New Paltz, where they were living, or in Kingston. They were certainly married by 20 June 1682 when their daughter Sara was baptized in Kingston.

The baptisms of three of Abraham and Margaret's children (Sara, Noah and Joel) were recorded at the Old Dutch Church in Kingston. [4] The baptisms of another four (Abraham, Leya, Rachel and Catherine) were recorded in the parish register of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Paltz. [5]

  1. Sara, bapt. 20 June 1682. Godparents: Joost Janz & Sara du Bois.
  2. Abraham, bapt. 17 April 1685. Godparents: Louis Dubois & Catherine Blancon.
  3. Leya, bapt. 16 October 1687. Godparents: Solomon DuBois & Mari Leblan.
  4. Rachel, bapt. 13 October 1689. Godparents: Abraham Hasbrouc & Mari Doyo.
  5. Catherine, bapt. 21 May 1693. Godparents: Louis DuBois & Trinque, wife of Salomon Dubois.
  6. Noah, bapt. 18 Feb. 1700. Godparents: Gerrit Wyncoop & Mary Slegt.
  7. Joel, bapt. 20 June 1703. Godparents: Mathys du Boys & Sara Mathyssen.

New Paltz, Ulster County, New York

Abraham DuBois was one of the 12 original Patentees of New Paltz.

Death and Burial

Abraham du Bois died 7 October 1731 and is buried at the Huguenot Cemetery in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York. The cemetery is also known as the Walloon Cemetery. The inscription on the rough stone reads: "1731 Oct 7, A D Bois, Surviver of 12 Pattentees." A second gravestone, which appears to be more recent, also includes the name of his wife, Margaret Deyo. [6]

Will & Probate

Abraham Dubois, of New Paltz, signed his will on 1 October 1730. The will was written in Dutch. It was proved on 22 October 1731. He named:

  • His wife Margaret
  • His children:
    • Abraham, eldest son
    • Joel
    • Sarah, wife of Roelof Eltinge
    • Leah, wife of Philip Fires
    • Rachel
    • Catherine
  • Executors: Son Abraham, son-in-law Roelef Eltinge, and Major Johans Hardenbergh.
  • Witnesses: Daniel Dubois, Thomas Beekman, John Crooks, Jr.

An abstract of the will, translated into English: [7]

(Written in the Dutch language.)—In den Namen des Heeren, Amen, October 1, 1730. I, ABRAHAM DUBOIS, of New Paltz, in Ulster County. It is my will that all my debts be paid in due time. My wife Margaret shall have and enjoy for life 1/3 of the proceeds of my real estate. My oldest son Abraham, for his right of primogeniture and obedience, shall have £200. And he shall not pay any rent for the land belonging to me on the Raritan river, in New Jersey, to the south of the land of John Cook, during my life and my wife's life, and then it shall go to him and his heirs; and it shall be appraised, and he shall pay the value to my other heirs, deducting the improvements made by him, since his settlement. I leave to my son Joel, all that parcel of land in New Paltz Patent, on the south side of the Paltz Kill, between the lands of the heirs of Abraham and Jan Hasbrouck. Also the large meadow and the lots in the Cripple Bush, Wassamakers land, and my house, barn and lot, in the village of Paltz, and the sheep meadow; and the land on the north side of the Paltz Kill, from the "dray heck" (turn stile). And he is to pay the amount at which it is appraised, deducting his proportion. I leave to my daughter Sarah and her husband, Roelof Eltinge, all my land on the north side of the Paltz Kill, which they now occupy, and all my land on the south side of the kill situate between Solomon and Daniel Dubois, which they now occupy. And they are to pay the appraised value except their equal share. I leave to my daughter Leah and her husband Philip Fires, during their life, 1/2 of that parcel of land at Canastage, next to the said Fires land, and then to her heirs, and they are to pay the appraised value. All of the rest of my estate I leave to all my children, Abraham, Joel, Sarah, Leah, Rachel and Catharine. But my daughter Catharine is only to have one half as much as the rest. My children are not to sell their lands to any strangers, before they shall have acquainted their brothers and sisters and given them the refusal. I make my son Abraham, and my son-in-law, Roelef Eltinge, and Major Johans Hardenbergh, executors.

There doesn't seem to be any evidence that Abraham DuBois and his wife Margaret had children named Mary and Benjamin.

MARY DUBOIS (Du_Bois-261)

1. She doesn't appear in the baptism records of New Paltz, where her parents were living, and where most of her siblings were baptized. The given baptism date, 13 Oct. 1689, belongs to her sister Rachel, not Mary.

2. She was not mentioned in Abraham's 1730 will.

3. The FamilySearch ID that's used as a source, KF28-J2V, has been merged into her sister Leah's profile: L839-9WJ.

I recommend that this profile be merged into the profile for her sister, Rachel (DuBois-168), since that is who the baptism record belongs to.

BENJAMIN DUBOIS (Dubois-67)

1. There is no baptism record for this person in New Paltz in 1691 (or any other year, for that matter).

2. The 20-volume "American Descendants of Chrétien Du Bois of Wicres, France," by the Du Bois Family Association (1998) doesn't include Benjamin as a child of Abraham and Margaret.

3. The FamilySearch Family Tree entry for Benjamin du Bois (ID MQ9S-YZS) has been deleted with the comment "No Benjamin duBois is known."

4. It's not clear what the source was for Benjamin's death date of 1 Oct. 1730. A search of Ancestry.com didn't turn up a Benjamin DuBois who died on that date.

I recommend that this profile be unlinked as a child of Abraham and Margaret.

Is this the same person ? It's very hard to read.

Nice! That's the source for his baptism. I have only viewed the image from my phone so I will not pretend to have verified the transcription, but I consider it entirely appropriate to accept the transcribed data seen on FamilySearch. That source is vastly preferable to the unidentifiable and unfindable Gedcom and the Broderbund CD that are currently cited for his baptism in Manheim. Could you please edit the profile to cite this record? (And get rid of the worthless citations that currently are cited as if they were authoritative sources for his bapism.)

thanks! archive.org's Wayback Machine had captured the page - I've updated the link: https://web.archive.org/web/20131004114806/http://www.huguenotstreet.org/visit/virtual_tour/bevier_etling.php

Historic Huguenot Street re-did its website a few years back. The home page is still there, but most everything else moved - see https://www.huguenotstreet.org/

Dubois-1186 and Du Bois-10 appear to represent the same person because: Everything matches except for the spellings of the names. No conflicts to prevent a merge. Du_Bois-10 is the project-protected profile.

Du Bois-266 and Du Bois-10 appear to represent the same person because: same years/same wife. Project members chose Du Bois-10 as the final WikiTree ID for Abraham last year, but if you feel strongly that it should be du Bois (lowercase d in du), please do NOT complete the merge & notify me so that we can switch protection and reverse the merge. Thanks! Liz
