Margaret Pert[1] was the daughter and co-heiress of William Pert and Joan le Scrope.[2] Following the death of her father (before 1390), her mother remarried to Sir Roger Swillington. Margaret Pert would later marry Thomas Hopton, the half-brother Roger Swillington (making her mother also her step-sister).
Birth
Margaret was most likely born between 1388-1390. Richardson states that she was born about 1397 (aged 30 in 1427);[2] however, she was described as age 30 and more in the Inquisition Post Mortem (IPM) of her mother and, in the same document, her older sister is called aged 40 and more,[3] so Margaret's age should be taken as between 30 and 39 on 28 October 1427. Additionally, her father is said to have died by 1390, and she was old enough to have her son born by 1408. These facts taken together place her birth at between 1388 and 1390.
Marriages and Children
Margaret married first to Thomas Hopton, illegitimate son of Robert Swillington,[2] by about 1404 (estimated from son's 1405 date of birth). They had one son:
John Hopton Esq., born about 1405 (aged 24 in 1429), married three times: Margaret Saville (had issue), Agnes Heveningham and Thomasine Barrington (had one child). John died 10 November 1478.[2] John is specifically called "in nonage" and a ward in his marriage agreement of 27 February 1427, and is specifically called "of full age" on 29 November 1429,[4] which puts his birth closer to 1408.
Thomas Hopton died by February 1427,[5] when the wardship of his son belonged to William Seargill.[6] Richardson states that Thomas died before 5 November 1427[2] (when Margaret likely appears remarried).
Margaret married second to William Edlington by 23 October 1427, when they were named as married in the IPM of her mother.[3] Richardson gives their marriage as before 5 November 1427.[2]
Death
Margaret died before April 1466 (probably considerably before). Her date of death is not known. We know she was married to William Eldington in December 1427. William died testate in April 1466. Margaret had died previous to this, and William held her 1/3 interest in Castle Carlton by the courtesy of England. He had remarried and Christina was his wife named in his will.[citation needed]
Research Notes
Common name error: Sometimes found on the internet as "de Pert." This is incorrect, and the name should just be Pert.

Margaret (Pert) Edlington is listed in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail between Gateway AncestorHenry Isham and Magna Carta Surety BaronRobert de Ros (vol. II, pages 461-462 ISHAM) that was project-approved/badged in March 2016 by a Magna Carta project member. This trail is set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile. Per Royal Ancestry, vol. 3, page 313, her descendants include Peyton, Isham, Mauleverer, and Saltonstall.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Is there any evidence at all for her place of birth? In any case, the town is Leyburn not Leybourn and it was in the North Riding of Yorkshire not the fictional Wensley North Riding.
How can she have died in 1408 when she was in her second marriage in 1427?
Margaret (De Pert) de Westwode (1387 - abt. 1408) Lady Margaret "Lady Westwode" de Westwode formerly De Pert aka DePert, Edlington, Hopton.
Could somebody tidy up this eccentric collection of names, most of which are wrong? Her first name was Margaret and her family names were first Pert, that of her father, then Hopton, that of her first husband, and finally Edlington, that of her second husband. She never had the title of Lady nor that of Westwood, which was the name of her son's estate in Suffolk.
Good Day! I will be doing some work on behalf of the Magna Carta Project. This profile has been identified as being a part of that project. Your forbearance will be appreciated.
