Am assuming my Family Tree is on WikiTree as I've uploaded a GEDCOM. Current tree database has over 9,000 entries although had to limit that to <5,000 for WikiTree. Have so far found nine gateway ancestors of royal descent. Former Governor of the Connecticut Society of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America.

Hi Cheryl: thanks for your note. Finding WikiTree to be helpful but still have a long way to go to be making full use. Question: When doing the GEDCOMpare...it frequently finds a few suggested matches. Is there any way to see only the those found suggested matches rather than having to wade through the entire list?

Thanks again, cheers. Len

Hi Len,

You are very welcome, it was my pleasure. I am going to give you a link with information on GEDCOMs. I think it will help you with your questions a lot better than me trying to explain it to you.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

If you still have questions, please feel free to contact myself or any of the other greeters on your profile.

Thank you, and please stay safe.

Cheryl ~ WikiTree Greeter

OK, thanks.

Cheers, and stay healthy. Len

Hi Len,

I had the same GEDCOM problem. Being a fellow academic, I also felt the need to do 5000 at once. What I found was that about 80% of my ancestors were already on WikiTree, which meant that I had to generate profiles for several hundred people. There is a way to break it into more manageable bites - try creating a GEDCOM for only the 3 or 4 most recent generations. You are more likely to hit duplicate profiles after that. Also, be aware that WikiTree is very precise about surnames so Samuel Blakeslee and Samuel Blakesley would turn up as two different people even though it's the same fellow.

What I'm REALLY here to do is to thank you for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

There are a number of projects that might interest you. Here are a couple: Puritan Great Migration and Connecticut. If neither of these catches your eye, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Thank You for becoming a Family Member of WikiTree! Your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together. I'm a volunteer greeter, here to help answer questions you may have about WikiTree.

I would suggest starting with New Member How-to pages which may save you a lot of time and frustration.

Since you’ve been DNA tested you might want to review Getting the Best from DNA, which will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

You might want to explore and ask questions in our very active G2G forum. You can get involved as much or as little as works for you. Check out the tabs at the very top right hand side of your profile, there is lots to discover!

Hi Leonard

I see that you have uploaded a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report. The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.
