Disputed Origins

The birth date and location, and parents presently on this profile in Kent are "almost certainly spurious" (please see research notes below). Thomas Nye and Agnes (Rye) Nye are being detached as parents; if future research provides documents of the parentage, they may certainly be reconnected, following discussion.

Biography

Benjamin is the son of Thomas and Agnes Nye. (See Notes: this parentage has been called "almost certainly spurious" by NEHGR.) He arrived in Lynn, Massachusetts aboard the Abigail with Edmund Freeman's party. Also a passenger of the Abigail was the Reverend Thomas Tupper who settled in Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts in 1637. His daughter Katherine married Benjamin Nye in Sandwich on 19 Oct 1640. "Bejnamin Nye and Katherne Tupper marryed the xixth october 1640"[1]

Marriage

Husband: Benjamin (1) Nye
Wife: Katherine Tupper
Marriage Date: 19 OCT 1640
Place: presumably Sandwich, Plymouth Colony[2]

Death

Date: AFT 09 JUN 1704
Place: Sandwich, Barnstable County, Province of Massachusetts Bay[3]

Homestead Museum

The 1678 Nye Homestead, is now an historic Cape Cod house museum, located in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Research Notes

NEHGR 158:347-60 states that the birth date and location presently on the profile in Kent are "almost certainly spurious" and goes on to place his "possible origins" in Sussex.[4]

In 1654 Benjamin Nye's name appears on a list of those contributing toward building a mill; in 1655 his name is on the subscription list for building a meetinghouse ; in the same year (1655) he was supervisor of highways; in 1657, he engaged to pay fifteen shillings yearly toward the minister's salary; was chosen constable in 1661, etc. He seems to have built a mill at the little pond and therefor the town in 1669 voted him twelve acres of land. He was granted permission in 1675 to build a fulling-mill upon Spring river.
These with other references to him in important connection and relation to public business evidence the kind of man he was.
He was requested to be the overseer of the estate of Samuel Fish whose will was dated 2 Feb 1691/2.[5]
On 09 June 1704, Sandwich, a deed was executed by Benjamin giving Jonathan all his lands in exchange for keeping himself, his wife Katherine and daughter Mercy in their infirmity.[6][7]

Perhaps one of the PMs could disconnect his parents...

The following was written on the PGM page but really belongs here:

"What do we know about Benjamin Nye’s church or religious affiliation? My grandmother was a Nye. Thank you for your assistance."

Are there any objections to removing the parents, the exact birth date and place?

NEHGR 158:347-60 casts serious doubt on the attached parentage. He is not covered by Anderson (unless there is a GMD entry) except in the Newsletters which points to the NEHGR research. This should be reviewed by PGM and most likely have the parents detached. The source currently used on the profile appears to be generally discredited. Adding to this, NEHGR uses the phrase "almost certainly spurious" to describe the birth date and location claimed in the Nye Genealogy (this first came about 1903 in an address to the first Nye family reunion). NEHGR goes on to place his "possible origin" in Sussex.

Nye-20 and Nye-6 are not ready to be merged because: Nye-6 has very little data and the only useful information the profile contains (birth place)is in conflict with Nye-20.

Nye-989 and Nye-20 are not ready to be merged because: Need to merge multiple generations of parents & grandparents first.

While I DO agree that Nye-989 & Nye-20 should be merged (with deth date of 1714, not 1676, which was the son, Nye-264), and the wife, Katherine Tupper should be shown as mother to all the children shown on the profile of Nye-20, I do NOT agree that the daughter Mary on Nye-989 's profile is correct. Please be cautious when merging the children!

Nye-989 and Nye-20 appear to represent the same person because: Same names, same birth locations, same parents, and same child. The only differing data is the death dates, there is a 38 year difference. The correct death date needs to be verified before merge. Thanks
