Biography

Elisabetha (Unknown) Himmelberger has German Roots.

According to the inscription on the gravestone for Elisabeth and her husband, Elisabeth was born on 6 November 1713, in Germany. Her last name is not known.

She emigrated to America in 1737, arriving at the port of Philadelphia on 5 October 1737 aboard the ship Townshend a bilander, and sometimes recorded as the Bilander Townshend.

Elisabeth Unknown married Valentine Himmelberger, aboard the ship Bilander Townshead, two days before landing in America (probably 3 October 1737). They had the following children:

  1. Philip (1739-1796) m Margaretha Brecht (1745-1806); 11 children
  2. Mary Elizabeth (1741- )
  3. Catherine (1742-1771) m Johannes Fischer (1737-1806); 3 children
  4. Clara (1744-1818) m Nicholas Fisher (~1744- ); 1 son Adam
  5. George (1747-1821) m Elisabeth Brecht (1749-1823); 10 children
  6. Jacob (1750-1824) m Margaret Leib (1754-1803); 4 children
  7. Ulrich (1752-1793) m Elisabeth Tesch (~1752- ); 8 children. He died in Kentucky
  8. Susanna (1753-1830) m Michael Schock (1747-1815); 14 children
  9. Eva (~1755- bef. 24 Apr 1811) m Abraham Bucks (1750-1811); 9 children

She died in Berks County, Pennsylvania, on the 1st (or possibly 3rd) of June 1788 and is buried in Fairview (Salem, Belleman's) Cemetery, Mohrsville, Centre Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.[1]

Research Notes

Some online genealogies give Schnebeli (or a variant spelling) as her last name at birth and name her parents as Isaac Schnebli (born Snavely), Sr., and Anna Elisabeth Weissmann.

Unknown-578933 is the daughter of Schnebeli-114 and Schnebly-63, source: the Janet and Robert Wolfe Genealogy data set hosted by the University of Michigan.

The Wolfe Genealogy page gives no sources for Elisabetha's LNAB, and cites only DNA matches for this connection. The profile was merged from Schnebeli to Unknown once before in the absence of any evidence for the Schnebeli surname. It would be good to know what the reasoning is behind the claim.

At https://websites.umich.edu/~bobwolfe/gen/pn/p38624.htm the Wolfe Genealogy says "The family tree of a person who has a DNA match to Robert [Wolfe] suggests a lineage to this sibling of Robert's ancestor." I think that's the "reasoning" for the Schnebeli connection. I can't tell whether this is a reference to Y-DNA, which might have some merit, or if it is autosomal DNA, which is useless at this relationship distance.

I note that in the highly detailed online genealogy at http://genea.hommelberg.nl/genea/verwijs.php?page=MenuD/06-Himmelberger/Genealogy%20Valentine%20Himmelberger%20(DE%20US).html her LNAB is given as "Unknown."

Her gravestone gives her birth date as 6 November 1713, and the Wolfe website says she was born on that date at Hamm, Altenkirchen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. If there's a Schnebeli girl born on that date to the indicated parents, there may be some merit to the claim for that name. Lacking that confirmatory evidence, I'm inclined to stick with "Unknown."

ADDED: I searched FamilySearch for Elisabeth or Maria Elisabetha (no last name specified) born in 1713 in Hamm, Altenkirchen, Rhineland-Palatinate (with results that included hits from all over Germany) but I didn't find any likely records for her.

Schnebeli-63 and Unknown-578933 appear to represent the same person because: same birth & death dates; same husband; same daughter; merge into Unknown unless there is a source for maiden name
